Missing teen surfer miraculously found on remote island after vanishing at sea

Daily Mirror12-07-2025
19-year-old Darcy Deefholts was presumed dead after the Australian teenager ended up missing while going for a surf in New South Wales, only to be round on a remote island
A teen who vanished without a trace after heading out for a solo surf off the coast of northern New South Wales, in Australia, has been miraculously found alive after becoming stranded on a remote island more than eight miles out to sea.
Darcy Deefholts, 19, sparked a desperate search after he failed to return from a Wednesday afternoon surf at One Tree Beach, near the quiet coastal town of Wooli. As daylight faded and fears grew, Darcy's father turned to social media in a heartbreaking plea for help. In a desperate plea to find his son, concerned parent Terry Deefholts wrote: 'HELP – I NEED BOATS, BEACH WALKERS, DRONES, 4WDs and PLANES AT FIRST LIGHT.

Marine Rescue teams scoured the coastline from Bare Point to Pebbly Beach, but the search was suspended overnight, leaving a sleepless family clinging to hope. But in an astonishing twist of fate, Darcy was discovered alive the following morning on North Solitary Island, a desolate spit of land just over eight miles offshore.
It was something his father described as a "one-in-a-million miracle." He added: "I haven't even spoken to him yet… I'm just so over the moon. I can't even begin to fathom how he survived. It's just a lot to process."

Just hours before his son was found, Terry had begged boat owners to search nearby islands and even feared the worst but refused to give up, the NY Post reports. Taking to social media, he posted: 'Boats – need one to go straight to North West Solitary Island."
But it was North Solitary where young Darcy would ultimately be found, battered but alive. His original post has since been shared more than 1,100 times, with strangers from across the state offering boats, drones, and even planes to aid the search.
Thousands became invested in the post and prayed for a positive outcome. Updating them on the search, Terry wrote: 'We are overwhelmed by the community efforts. There is only one thing we want now – our beloved boy to be found safe.'
NSW Police confirmed Darcy had left his Wooli home by bicycle at around 2.30pm on Wednesday and hadn't been seen since, sparking urgent concern due to the out-of-character disappearance. Darcy was described as slim, 180cm tall, with black hair and a quiet nature.
Marine Rescue NSW swung into action late Wednesday, deploying rescue vessel Wooli 30 in a last-light search, which resumed early Thursday with help from Coffs Harbour crews. Inspector John Murray commented: 'The volunteer crews will conduct search patterns under the direction of Marine Area Command."

Family's horror as police officer dad dies suddenly playing with kids on beach trip

Paul Leslie Matts, 37, tragically died after suffering a medical episode during a holiday with his wife Danni and their four children. He worked as a police officer for 16 years An Australian family has been left heartbroken after a loving dad died suddenly while playing with his children during a beach holiday. ‌ Paul Leslie Matts, 37, suffered a fatal medical episode during the getaway with his wife Danni and their kids. He is survived by their children, Harlow and Xavier, who is eight months old, as well as stepchildren Archer and Jasmine. The young dad worked as a police officer for more than 16 years and was a sergeant with New South Wales Police. Family friends described Paul's death as devastating, as they launched a fundraiser to support Danni and her young children. ‌ ‌ Jenna McAtamney and Sarah Wilkinson wrote on GoFundMe: "Danni and her three children - ages 8, 7, and 8 months - are now facing life without their loving dad and step dad, Paul Matts, who passed away tragically and unexpectedly on July 8th, 2025. This loss has left the family devastated and in need of support as they begin to navigate this new reality. "Their youngest child Xavier, is just 8 months old. Danni is doing everything she can to stay strong for her kids, but she cannot do it alone." They said the money raised will help Danni take some time off to grieve and look after her children, as well as ongoing care for Xavier, emotional and financial support. Sharing the circumstances of the incident, Jenna and Sarah wrote: "We have had alot of people asking for details about the circumstances of Paul's death. With permission from Danni, Paul was on holidays with his Wife and kids. ‌ "Danni, Paul and their 4 kids were having a great time laughing and playing on the beach when suddenly Paul had a medical episode. Sadly he succumbed to this, we have peace knowing that Paul passed away, surrounded by the ones he loved the most." Paul had previously worked as the local policeman in the small town of Burren Junction and his MP Roy Butler had thanked him in parliament for organising a community day in 2020, reported. Mr Butler said: "To repay Burren for being so welcoming, Paul organised a family fun day for the town. "He moved heaven and earth to put on an afternoon and evening of entertainment – from slip 'n' slides, a visit from Santa, and a raffle for a family holiday. The purpose of the event was twofold: to say thank you and to help people take their minds off the drought. On behalf of Burren Junction, thank you." Family and friends have expressed their grief for Paul's passing on social media. One wrote: "A beautiful soul gone way too soon. RIP buddy." Another added: "So very sad to see someone so young pass away. RIP." In addition to his wife and children, Paul is also mourned by his parents, David and Julie, and his sisters Catherine and Rebecca.

Gregg Wallace 'threw John Torode under bus' at MasterChef as 'relationship broke down'

Despite presenting MasterChef for 20 years together, they were "never friends", it's claimed - after the pair were both sacked from the show Gregg Wallace was feeding information about his MasterChef co-presenter John Torode during an investigation into his own behaviour, it has been claimed. Despite the men fronting the BBC cookery show for 20 years together, the pair were 'never friends', a new report says. ‌ Wallace was actually briefing against Torode when the broadcaster and production company were investigating allegations of misconduct against him. It comes after both presenters were axed from the show. Wallace was sacked first, after 45 out of 83 claims against him, including "unwanted physical contact", "being in a state of undress", bullying and inappropriate jokes, were uphold. This week Torode followed him out of the door over an allegation of using "an extremely offensive racist term", which he denies any knowledge of. ‌ READ MORE: MasterChef's new hosts 'revealed' after Gregg Wallace and John Torode scandal ‌ It has been reported that he used the N-word at a season filming wrap party in 2019 while singing along to Gold Digger by Kanye West. But BBC News say the claim actually relates to the previous year when he allegedly used the same word on set following the end of filming, and it was directed at a member of staff. The Australian star, 59, continues to insist he has 'no recollection' of the "offensive" comment he was accused of making, despite lawyers Lewis Silkin upholding the complaint. He said any racist language is "wholly unacceptable". Nine allegations were made against Torode between 2012 and 2019. Investigators classed two as not substantiated and six as having insufficient evidence. They include other allegations of abusive language towards junior production staff and sexual language ‌ BBC News revealed the allegations in November. They claim the MasterChef production team were 'defensive' at the time and 'wanted to ride out the storm', hoping 'the story would go away.' 'There was a view that Wallace's career could be saved, and his worst behaviour was in the past,' writes Noor Nanji. 'Others in the production team were in disbelief.' She says few formal complaints were made through fear of 'repercussions'. Many of the staff on the show were freelance and worried future career opportunities would be hampered if they spoke up. The BBC and Banijay were said to be at odds with each other over the saga, with Banijay not initially planning to sack Torode but the BBC's director general Tim Davie insisting on drawing "a line in the sand" over it. ‌ Earlier this week the Mirror reported how Torode was preparing to take legal action against the BBC and Banijay after he was sacked from MasterChef. He said in a statement told how he'd only found out his contract had been terminated after the Beeb and producers Banijay put out the news. Sources close to the star say he's speaking to employment lawyers as he fights to 'clear his name.' Torode himself revealed he was the subject on an allegation, saying: "I do not believe that it happened." Banijay UK said it had discussed the matter with Torode and with the BBC and that they "are agreed that we will not renew his contract on MasterChef". But in a statement released on Tuesday night, Torode said: "Although I haven't heard from anyone at the BBC or Banijay, I am seeing and reading I've been 'sacked' from MasterChef. I repeat that I have no recollection of what I'm accused of. The enquiry could not even state the date or year of when I am meant to have said something wrong." He said Celebrity MasterChef, which he recently filmed with food critic Grace Dent, along with two Christmas specials, would be his last. ‌ Speaking to BBC News on Tuesday afternoon, BBC Director General Davie described the allegation against Torode as "a serious racist term which does not get to be acceptable in any way shape or form. It's really important we are taking this seriously.' ITV are currently standing by John and give his TV career a lifeline. The third episode of John and Lisa's Weekend Kitchen, the show he hosts with wife Lisa, went out yesterday morning. A source said the developments have been 'hard for Lisa', who is 'conscious of their ITV show and doesn't want to jeopardise that.' Question marks now hang over the full recording of BBC1's amateur version of MasterChef, put on ice over the probe into Wallace, and the 20th celebrity series, with 20 faces yet to be named, plus judge Grace Dent. But Davie insisted the show would survive. "It's a great programme, well loved by audiences. It is bigger than individuals. It can survive and prosper, but we've got to make sure we're in the right place in terms of the culture of the show," he said. Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt and The Great British Menu host Andi Oliver are in the frame to take over the mantle at MasterChef.

EXCLUSIVE: John Torode to take legal action against BBC after MasterChef sacking

John Torode is preparing to take legal action against the BBC after he was sacked from MasterChef. He was ditched from the cooking show after an allegation against him using 'an extremely offensive racist term' was upheld. John said he had 'no recollection' of it happening - and in a statement told how he'd only found out his contract had been terminated after the Beeb and producers Banijay put out the news. Now sources close to the star say he's speaking to employment lawyers as he fights to 'clear his name.' 'John is preparing to launch the lawsuit against the BBC,' tells the insider. 'He wants to pursue them for unfair dismissal. He's telling people there is no proof of his supposed comment. It was not in a work capacity, it was just hearsay. John is determined to clear his name.' Torode, 59, followed his MasterChef co-host Gregg Wallace out of the door at the BBC for allegedly using racist language. The Australian star continues to insist he had no knowledge of the 'offensive' comment he was accused of making, despite lawyers Lewis Silkin upholding the complaint, said to be from 2018 in their independent investigation into the series. It came after the firm upheld 45 out of 83 claims against Wallace, 60, including 'unwanted physical contact', 'being in a state of undress', bullying and inappropriate jokes. Torode himself revealed he was the subject on an allegation, saying: 'I do not believe that it happened.' The source said the move took the Beeb by surprise.
