Putin praises Trump's efforts to end Ukraine war ahead of Alaska summit

Following a meeting on Thursday with top government officials on the summit, Putin said in a short video released by the Kremlin that the Trump administration was making 'quite energetic and sincere efforts to stop the hostilities' and to 'reach agreements that are of interest to all parties involved'.
Putin also suggested that 'long-term conditions of peace between our countries, and in Europe, and in the world as a whole,' could be reached under an agreement with the U.S. on nuclear arms control.
In Washington, Trump said there was a 25 per cent chance that the summit would fail, but he also floated the idea that, if the meeting succeeds, he could bring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Alaska for a subsequent, three-way meeting.
In a radio interview with Fox News, Trump also said he might be willing to stay in Alaska longer, depending on what happens with Putin.

Meanwhile, Zelensky and other European leaders worked to ensure their interests are taken into account when Trump and Putin meet in Anchorage.

'If we don't have a trilat, then the fighting continues.' Putin is 'expecting my call when we're finished with this meeting', he added. Zelensky said he supported Trump's personal involvement in ending the conflict.

Newsmax agrees to pay US$67 million in defamation case over 2020 election claims
The conservative network Newsmax will pay US$67 million to settle a lawsuit accusing it of defaming a voting equipment company by spreading lies about US President Donald Trump's 2020 election loss, according to documents filed on Monday. The settlement comes after Fox News Channel paid US$787.5 million to settle a similar lawsuit in 2023 and Newsmax paid what court papers describe as US$40 million to settle a libel lawsuit from a different voting machine manufacturer, Smartmatic, which also was a target of pro- Trump conspiracy theories on the network. Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis had ruled earlier that Newsmax did indeed defame Denver-based Dominion Voting Systems by broadcasting false information about the company and its equipment. But Davis left it to a jury to eventually decide whether that was done with malice and, if so, how much Dominion deserved from Newsmax in damages. Newsmax and Dominion reached the settlement before the trial could take place. The settlement was disclosed by Newsmax in a new filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. It said the deal was reached on Friday. 'Newsmax believed it was critically important for the American people to hear both sides of the election disputes that arose in 2020,' the company said in a statement. 'We stand by our coverage as fair, balanced and conducted within professional standards of journalism.'

US President Donald Trump said he would sign an executive order ahead of next year's midterm elections targeting mail-in ballots and voting machines, a move that would dramatically change how millions of Americans cast their ballots. 'I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also, while we're at it, Highly 'Inaccurate,' Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES,' Trump posted on social media on Monday. Trump provided no evidence to back up his claims of widespread problems with voting machines. The president has long made unsubstantiated allegations that his 2020 election loss to former US president Joe Biden was tainted by fraud. 'Vladimir Putin, smart guy, said you can't have an honest election with mail-in voting. And he said there's not a country in the world that uses it now,' Trump said in an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity after meeting the Russian leader, even though dozens of countries do so. Federal judges blocked an order Trump signed in March that would require proof of US citizenship to vote and ban the counting of valid mail-in ballots that arrive after election day.
