Thailand-Cambodia peace talks begin in Putrajaya amid border tensions
The talks, facilitated by Malaysia and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the current ASEAN Chair, seek to reduce tensions and restore stability in the conflict-affected border regions.
Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai arrived at Seri Perdana, the official residence of the Malaysian prime minister, at about 2.51 pm, followed shortly by Cambodian leader Hun Manet. Both leaders were welcomed by Anwar.
Also present at the meeting were US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard Kagan and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing, with the US as co-organiser and China as an observer.
Last Friday, Anwar had called Phumtham and Manet separately, urging both leaders to agree to an immediate ceasefire and return to dialogue to resolve their dispute.
Anwar reiterated Malaysia's readiness to assist in the process, emphasising ASEAN unity and shared responsibility.
The two Southeast Asian nations have a history of diplomatic disputes over an 817-kilometre undemarcated border stretch.
Tensions escalated on May 28 after a skirmish near the contested Preah Vihear border area, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
Renewed clashes broke out on July 24, with armed confrontations reported along Cambodia's northern border, leading to casualties on both sides.
So far, over 20 fatalities have been reported on the Thai side, while Cambodian authorities confirmed 13 deaths, including five soldiers.
Thousands of civilians from both countries have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict. - Bernama

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is taking the country's debt situation seriously, with a clear focus on curbing new borrowings and narrowing the fiscal deficit. "When the deficit declines, debt levels also fall. We've heard the Prime Minister previously speak about limiting new borrowings, and he is clearly committed to avoiding excessive debt,' he said. Mustazar was speaking as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme yesterday, in an episode titled '13MP: The People's Socioeconomic Agenda and Hopes'. According to the 13MP blueprint, ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts are expected to narrow the fiscal deficit to below three per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) and keep the federal debt level under 60 per cent of GDP. Commenting on the development allocation for Kota MADANI, Mustazar said the initiative reflects a public-private partnership model. "The government will not spend directly but instead grant concessions to qualified private firms. Hence, not everything announced by the government will involve direct fiscal commitments. "The government will leverage private sector expertise-firms that are more experienced, willing to take risks, and capable of assessing the viability of projects,' he added. 13MP, tabled by the Prime Minister in the Dewan Rakyat, outlines the country's development agenda for 2026-2030, with a total allocation of RM611 billion. - Bernama

Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah: RM410mil disbursed in Sabah under Phases 1 and 2
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 830,000 recipients in Sabah have benefited from the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) programme so far, with RM410 million disbursed under Phase 1 and Phase 2 payments. Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a written parliamentary reply last night, said the remaining two STR phases are scheduled to be disbursed in August and November. He added that 506,000 recipients in the state have also been approved under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, which comes with an annual allocation of RM500 million. "Sabah recorded the highest MyKad usage for Sara purchases, with 95 per cent of recipients already making purchases at registered premises," he said. Anwar was responding to Vivian Wong Shir Yee (PH–Sandakan), who queries number of eligible Sara recipients in Sabah and how many had redeemed the assistance so far. Anwar also said more than 4,500 grocery stores and supermarkets nationwide are now registered under the programme, a significant jump from just 700 last year. "In line with the rising number of recipients, the number of participating business premises under Sara has also seen a marked increase. "In Sabah alone, more than 470 premises have registered, and this number will continue to grow to ensure broader access in all areas. He said the government remains committed to ensuring its cash aid programmes reach those most in need, especially in the face of rising living costs. "The government has raised the allocation for the STR and Sara programmes to a record RM13 billion, compared with RM10 billion previously. "This increase continues to benefit nearly nine million recipients, or about 60 per cent of the country's adult population," he said. On July 23, Anwar, who is also the prime minister, announced that all Malaysians aged 18 and above will receive a one-off RM100 assistance through their MyKad under the Sara programme. He said the aid, which can be used from Aug 31 until Dec 31, is meant for the purchase of essential goods at over 4,100 outlets nationwide, including major supermarkets such as Mydin, Lotus's, Econsave and 99 Speedmart, as well as retail stores in all districts.
