Michael Bloomberg has been named the biggest donor of 2024 on the TIME100 Philanthropy list. The media mogul gave away $3.7 billion of his sizable fortune – estimated at over $100 billion – in the last one year alone, making him the largest individual donor.
Michael Bloomberg, 83, is an American businessman, politician, philanthropist and author. He is best known as the co-founder, CEO, and majority owner of Bloomberg LP, a global financial information and media company.
Boston-born Bloomberg founded Bloomberg LP in 1981. The company revolutionised financial data terminals and is now a leading provider of business and financial news.
The American billionaire has a bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
With an estimated net worth of $105 billion, Michael Bloomberg is the richest person in the state of New York, according to Forbes.
He also served as the mayor of New York from 2002 to 2013.
In 2024, Bloomberg's noteworthy grants included $1 billion to his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University. The grant will help make medical school free for most students and increase financial aid for nursing and public-health students, according to Time magazine.
Last year, he also announced a $600 million gift to the endowments of four historically Black medical schools.
'I've never understood people who wait until they die to give away their wealth. Why deny yourself the satisfaction?' he wrote in an email to the Chronicle of Philanthropy earlier this year. 'I've been very lucky, and I'm determined to do what I can to open doors for others and to leave a better world for my children and grandchildren.'
Other names on Time magazine's 100 most influential philanthropists include Oprah Winfrey, Melinda French Gates, Warren Buffett, Nita and Mukesh Ambani, and Azim Premji.

Andhra Pradesh and Nvidia sign MoU to advance growth of AI ecosystem
Andhra Pradesh has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with American Technology company, Nvidia Corp to advance growth of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem in the state, said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on part of the MoU signed between both the sides, the tech giant will privide support to the state in preparing curriculum and training over next two years. In a post on X, Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu said, "Andhra Pradesh is welcoming bold initiatives to lead India's AI revolution. Under the leadership of Hon'ble IT Minister @naralokesh Garu, we have entered into an MoU with @nvidia to build a strong and inclusive AI ecosystem in the state." "With support from NVIDIA for curriculum and training, 10,000 engineering students will receive skill training over the next two years, while 500 AI startups from AP will gain access to its Inception Program for global exposure and key resources," CM added. CM Naidu further added that plans are underway to establish India's first AI University in collaboration with NVIDIA to shape the infrastructure and research capabilities. "From education and skilling to research and innovation, this initiative is laying the foundation for a Swarna Andhra Pradesh," he added. Andhra Pradesh is actively working towards developing the state's AI ecosystem. The state government has announced the development of India's first Quantum Computing Village. The 50-acre facility in Amaravati, which the state government previously announced, is envisioned as a pioneering ecosystem for quantum computing research and collaboration. The facility is envisioned as a collaborative ecosystem where institutions and companies can access and share advanced quantum computing resources. It will also include a dedicated on-site data centre to support high-performance computing needs. IBM and TCS will jointly finalise the infrastructure specifications, with the initial setup set to host the IBM Quantum System Two.

The announcement comes at a time when Indian automakers are facing worsening shortages of rare earth magnets, critical components for electric vehicles (EVs) and other high-tech industries. According to Bloomberg, Beijing has turned down at least two recent applications for India-bound shipments of rare earth magnets, raising fears of an imminent disruption in Indian automobile production. Industry and government officials told Bloomberg that while shipments to the German and U.S. units of a global firm were cleared, the same request to its Indian arm was rejected. Since April 4—when China began enforcing tighter curbs on exports of seven rare earth elements—supplies to Indian auto parts manufacturers have been stuck at Chinese new controls require importers to certify that the magnets will not be used for defense purposes or re-exported to the U.S. The new end-user certification process can take at least 45 days and is now facing a global per the Bloomberg report, at least 30 Indian applications endorsed by the Indian government are still awaiting Chinese approval, while over 10 applications from other countries have reportedly been cleared. According to a May 28 presentation by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), no Indian applications have received final approval from China's commerce ministry despite many having secured embassy endorsements. 'Even if one magnetised part is missing, the vehicle cannot be built,' SIAM warned in the presentation, adding that some Indian firms may consider shifting operations to China if the supply crunch continues. The squeeze has heightened concern among Indian automakers. 'The rare earth situation is a very difficult one,' Bajaj Auto's Executive Director Rakesh Sharma told analysts. 'Supplies and stocks are getting depleted as we speak, and if there's no relief in shipments, production will be seriously impaired in July.'To address the growing crisis, a delegation of Indian businesses is planning to visit Chinese counterparts this month with help from the Indian Embassy in Beijing. The embassy has reached out to China's commerce ministry, seeking expedited clearance of pending applications.A meeting was recently held at the Indian Prime Minister's Office to discuss options for resolving the impasse. Indian officials have advised manufacturers to explore alternative supply chains and consider local refining capacities—though such solutions are long-term in the Indian government is also encouraging firms to explore ferrite magnets or magnet-free designs, though these come with compromises in cost and performance.
