Lucknow: It was a solar project in Uttar Pradesh worth over Rs 8,000 crore for which a 5% commission was allegedly demanded by middleman Nikant Jain from Vishwajeet Dutta, the representative of the solar energy firm behind the proposed venture, the SIT chargesheet has revealed.
The investigation found that Dutta, in an affidavit, also named the then CEO of Invest UP, Abhishek Prakash, who is currently under suspension, in connection with the alleged bribery case.
On May 19, the three-member SIT, which was probing allegations against the suspended IAS officer, submitted its chargesheet in the court of Special Judge Satendra Singh (PC Act-2), naming middleman Nikant Jain as the primary accused in the high-profile solar commission scam.
The court took cognisance of the chargesheet on May 21.
The chargesheet was filed under Section 308(5) (extortion involving threats of death or grievous hurt) of the BNS, and under sections 8 (bribery of a public servant) and 12 (abetment of offences) of the Prevention of Corruption Act against Nikant Jain. The case stems from an FIR lodged on Jan 20 this year at Gomtinagar police station, following an FIR by Vishwajeet Dutta, a representative of SAEL Solar P6 Pvt Ltd.
Dutta alleged that Jain demanded 5% commission "on behalf of a senior officer" in exchange for expediting approvals for a solar manufacturing project proposed through Invest UP.
In his complaint to chief secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, Dutta claimed that Jain explicitly named the then Invest UP CEO Abhishek Prakash as the person behind the demand. After preliminary inquiry, the state govt suspended Prakash on Mar 20.
"When asked about the project, he (Dutta) said it was worth over Rs 8,000 crore and that a senior official from Invest UP gave him Jain's contact. Jain demanded 5% (cut), and when demands escalated, he backed out and was threatened. The matter was later handled by the management team," the chargesheet said. TOI has a copy of the chargesheet. The chargesheet also mentions an affidavit by Vishwajit Dutta, revealing the name of then Invest UP CEO Abhishek Prakash.
The complainant's statement was recorded, and copies of WhatsApp chats provided were attached. "On March 16, at 10:44:57 am, a 10-second call from Dutta to the accused's number was found during the analysis of call detail records," the chargesheet said. "A search operation was conducted at Jain's residence in Gomtinagar but no bribe money was recovered. An on-spot inspection was carried out, and statements from Jain's family members were recorded.
Jain's office was found locked and was sealed," the report said.
Two mobile phones (iPhones) were recovered from Jain's possession and were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for data extraction. Police have also requested call detail records (CDRs) of both the complainant and the accused. Cyber cell officers were directed to freeze Jain's debit cards and identify any other active bank accounts. A total of 22 witnesses have been named in the report.
The SIT comprised Barabanki ASP Vikas Chandra Tripathi, Gomtinagar ACP Vinay Dwivedi, and inspector Alok Rai.

Major bank heist of 14 kg gold, Rs 5 lakh cash in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur; no breakthrough yet
BHOPAL: A major heist at a bank by five helmet wearing men has stunned the police establishment in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh. The heist by the five men, one of whom had a firearm tucked under his belt, reportedly happened within just 18 minutes on Monday morning at the ESAF Small Finance Bank in Khitola area of rural Jabalpur. The 18 minutes incident led to the robbing of around 14 kg gold and Rs 5 lakh cash – totalling over Rs 10 crore. 'Multiple teams have been constituted and an alert also sounded in adjoining districts also, to track and nab the robbers,' Jabalpur district police superintendent Sampat Upadhyaya told TNIE. The early morning robbery which was caught on the CCTV cameras, happened at the bank, which didn't have a security guard. Five to six staffers were present in the bank at the time of the robbery by the five men, who came on motorcycles. Surprisingly, the incident was informed to the local police by the bank staffers, around 45 minutes after the robbery. As per police sources, the police are working on various angles in the case, including possibility of any insider involvement, as it seems that the robbers were well aware of the lack of security there. The concerned bank gave loans against mortgaged gold. The bank usually starts operations daily at 10.30 am, but due to the festive season, it is currently opening daily between 8 am and 9 am. Primary investigations have revealed that the robbers entered the bank one by one and threatened to shoot the staffers if they interrupted the robbery.

Parliament panel slams govt for keeping MGNREGS funding static at Rs 86,000 crore since 2023–24
NEW DELHI: A parliamentary panel on Monday criticised the government for not increasing the allocation under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), expressing concern that funding has remained static at Rs 86,000 crore since the revised estimates of 2023–24. In a report tabled in Parliament, the Department-Related Parliamentary Committee on Rural Development and Panchayati Raj stressed that the effective implementation of the scheme hinges on 'timely and adequate' funding. 'The Committee is concerned to note that the allocation has remained unchanged since the 2023–24 revised estimates,' the report stated. It added that given MGNREGS's role in providing employment to rural and marginalised communities, consistent funding is essential for uninterrupted implementation. The panel questioned the government's rationale behind the stagnation in allocations, particularly for a demand-driven scheme like MGNREGS. It reiterated its earlier recommendation to reassess funding needs and raise allocations at the revised estimate stage if necessary. In its response, the Department of Rural Development (DoRD) maintained that fund disbursal is a 'continuous and demand-driven process,' and assured that the Centre remains committed to ensuring timely fund availability in coordination with the Ministry of Finance. The committee, however, dismissed the reply as 'stereotypical' and lacking seriousness, noting it merely outlined procedural aspects without addressing the core funding concerns. 'The Committee feels an immediate need for greater coordination between the DoRD and Ministry of Finance to ensure seamless implementation,' the report said. It reaffirmed its call for increased allocation to meet the scheme's objectives. According to budget data, Rs 89,153.71 crore was spent on MGNREGS in 2023–24. However, allocations for 2024–25 and 2025–26 remained fixed at Rs 86,000 crore each.

Delhi To Organise It's First Industrial Ideathon, 652 Student Teams To Participate
Delhi's Industrial Ideathon 2025: The race to solve Delhi's toughest industrial problems has officially begun and the city's students are all in. In a first-of-its-kind Industrial Ideathon, a staggering 652 teams from top universities have signed up to take on challenges that range from untangling last mile logistics to helping small industries embrace Industry 4.0 technology. The contest, organised by the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) in partnership with Netaji Subhash University of Technology (NSUT), has prizes worth Rs. 40 lakh on the line, but the real draw is the chance to pitch ideas directly to the people who shape policy and business in the capital. On August 13, NSUT will turn into an innovation war room as 124 shortlisted teams step into an intense eight-hour challenge. They'll tackle live problem statements, streamlining supply chains, making it easier to do business, integrating cutting-edge tech into small units, and helping MSMEs access finance and markets. The best 40 will earn a spot in the grand finale on August 22. Industries Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa says the massive turnout proves young Delhiites are ready to get their hands dirty solving real problems. "This overwhelming participation is proof that Delhi's youth want to be part of shaping our industrial future. They're ready to solve the real-world problems our businesses face every day," he said. Sirsa calls the initiative a bridge between classrooms, factory floors and government offices. "Students get to work on live problems with measurable impact, while policymakers gain fresh, actionable ideas straight from the country's brightest young minds. This is policy by participation in its truest form," he said. With over one lakh impressions on the official portal and more than 2,000 sign-ups during registration, the ideathon is already making waves beyond campus walls. All participants will get certificates, while winners will be felicitated by senior dignitaries at the closing ceremony. If the excitement around this debut edition is any indicator, Delhi's industrial policy may soon carry the fingerprints of its youngest problem-solvers. Students may visit for updates.
