ISLAMABAD:
The EuroVillage was an expansive funfair bringing Team Europe and flavours of European culture, food and music to Islamabad.
With thousands of attendees gathering for family entertainment, the PNCA, where the event was hosted, was packed, with barely breathing room in front of each of the stalls.
The Ambassador of the European Union, Dr Riina Kionka, said, "We celebrate the diverse cultures and identities that enrich Europe, forming the foundation of our shared values and our relations with the world, including Pakistan. Together, we are stronger, and our partnership in development, trade, and political engagement reflects this commitment."
The slogan of the event was "Stronger Together", in all its connotations. As always – this being the 6th edition of the EuroVillage in the capital – each member state of the EU showcased some distinctive attributes of their heritage or culture, sharing them with the public through fun games, quizzes, bite-sized samples of the cuisine and more.
The EuroVillage festival was co-organised by the diplomatic missions of the European Union alongside those of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, and Spain.
The Ambassador of France, Nicolas Galey, said, "Eurovillage is an event that celebrates Europe in its diversity. It is also a popular festival and a meeting with our Pakistani friends. The French stand is happy to share iconic products with Pakistanis, such as cheese or croissants! It is also an occasion to present the opportunities for learning the French language and studying in France, opportunities that we wish to make better known in Pakistan, with the aim of always bringing our populations closer together, our youth in particular!"
The Austrian Embassy shared the best of Austria's rich cultural heritage, culinary delights and innovative spirit. The Austrian pavilion created an unforgettable experience of Austrian hospitality as visitors were treated to an array of delicious Austrian delicacies, including the iconic Apfel Strudel, traditional Austrian cookies and Goulash, with a neighbouring stand creating Red Bull mocktails.
The German embassy stall also brought a taste of German traditional food to visitors, but the highlight was the Football Wall, a popular German game where participants aimed to score through two goal holes in the wall. This activity attracted many enthusiastic youngsters, who showcased their football skills with great excitement.
Poland went a different, and brilliant direction, highlighting the importance of social unity and role of women in science, business, culture, art and sports, by showing pictures of outstanding Polish women including, Maria Curie and Wanda Rutkiewicz, who was the first woman to climb K2 and a recipient of the Sitara-e Imtiaz.

Is 'Hostage' Netflix's boldest political thriller yet?

Netflix's new political thriller Hostage has arrived with gripping intensity, putting Suranne Jones in the spotlight as newly elected prime minister Abigail Dalton. The series wastes no time in throwing her into chaos, mixing political intrigue, family turmoil and international terrorism into a story that unfolds at breakneck speed. Dalton's rise to power is quickly overshadowed by personal tragedy. Her husband, a doctor working with humanitarian teams, is kidnapped along with his colleagues while on assignment in French Guiana. At the same time, Dalton faces a national crisis over access to vital cancer drugs, forcing her into tense negotiations with the French president, played with icy precision by Julie Delpy. The stakes rise when terrorists demand Dalton's resignation, leaving her to weigh the safety of her family against her responsibility as leader. The show refuses to linger, delivering five tightly woven hours that avoid the usual streaming bloat. Instead, it's packed with twists, betrayals and moral dilemmas. Dalton's daughter urges her to step down, her dying father pushes for family above politics, and her aides question her ability to lead. The pressure intensifies as public opinion shifts, with sympathy for Dalton's plight quickly giving way to criticism over government failings. Shot across international locations, Hostage feels expansive yet personal, grounding the spectacle in Dalton's emotional battle. What makes it refreshing is the way it presents two women in positions of extraordinary power without turning them into clichés. Both Jones and Delpy are given space to play layered, flawed leaders whose decisions carry devastating consequences. Fast, furious and deeply entertaining, Hostage balances political thrills with human drama. It asks hard questions about leadership, sacrifice and the price of power, all while keeping audiences hooked until the final moment. For Netflix, it's a gamble that pays off in full.

Duolingo apologises after lesson labels JK Rowling ‘mean' in German translation exercise

Duolingo, the world's most popular language-learning app with over 34 million daily active users, has apologised after JK Rowling was described as 'mean' in one of its German lessons. The controversial prompt appeared in an exercise where learners were asked to choose the correct translation for the sentence 'Do you like books with Harry Potter as a character?' The correct answer displayed was 'Yes, but in my opinion the author is mean.' Journalist Gaby Koppel highlighted the issue on X (formerly Twitter), calling the sentence 'gratuitous' and questioning its relevance to learning German. She noted that Rowling was the 'first and only real life person' criticised in her five months of using the app. Shame on you @duolingo: learning German and I came across the sentence "Yes I like Harry Potter but the author is mean". How woke do you have to be to let #trans ideology infect a language lesson? @jk_rowling — Gaby Koppel (@Gabykoppel) August 19, 2025 Duolingo has since apologised, with a company spokesman stating: 'We apologise for any offence caused and will remove this content from the app.' Rowling, best known for creating the Harry Potter series, has become a divisive public figure due to her outspoken gender-critical views. Critics have labelled her a TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist), while supporters argue she is standing up for women's rights. The term has followed her across public debates, with Rowling frequently responding to critics on social media and in essays published on her website.
