A monk from China who made Nalanda his home went on to become a guiding light for thousands. Known fondly as the 'Chinese Baba', Dr Yu Panyalinkara's life was one of service, compassion, and dedication to the spread of Buddhism. On his third death anniversary, Nalanda remembered the man who bridged cultures and touched countless lives.
Bihar's Nalanda's revered 'Chinese Baba', Dr Yu Panyalinkara, made this historic land his karmabhoomi in 1981, devoting himself to serving the poor, promoting Buddhism, and fostering international harmony. On his death anniversary, monks from Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka gather in Nalanda to pay tribute to their Guru and share stories of his tireless service.
For decades, the Buddhist Chinese Temple in Nalanda has been a centre of faith for devotees and tourists alike, drawing monks and visitors from across India and the world. On this special occasion, the temple once again became a hub of prayers, memories, and gratitude for a spiritual leader whose life touched thousands.
Dr Panyalinkara first arrived in India in 1981 for higher studies and earned his doctorate in the Pali language from Nava Nalanda Mahavihara in 1983. After obtaining Indian citizenship in 2002, he made Nalanda his permanent home, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to social and spiritual causes.
Affectionately called the 'Chinese Baba', he helped anyone in need, whether poor, sick, or facing personal hardships. His compassion drew people from all walks of life, from politicians and social workers to ordinary citizens, all of whom maintained a deep bond with him.
In 2009, the Government of Myanmar honoured him with the rare and prestigious 'Highest Degree in Religion' for his extraordinary contributions to social service and the propagation of Buddhism. His vision helped place Nalanda firmly on the global map of Buddhist pilgrimage.
Even today, thousands of devotees and foreign tourists visit Nalanda each year, inspired by Dr Panyalinkara's enduring legacy, a reminder of how one person's unwavering service can leave an indelible mark on both people and place.

Rourkela mourns the loss of NIT alumnus in London accident
1 2 Rourkela: A 30-year-old alumna of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, lost her life in a road accident in London four days ago. The deceased, Ankita Nayak, a resident of Sector-18 in Rourkela, was a gold medalist in her batch, having completed her in food process engineering from NIT-Rourkela in 2017. The devastating news reached her family on Thursday, leaving them heartbroken as they await the return of her body to India. Ankita had been working as a frontend web developer in a reputed company in London. Her father, Srustidhar Nayak, a former general manager at Rourkela Steel Plant, died three months earlier. After her father's death, Ankita spent an extended period in Rourkela with her mother and younger brother, Sampat Nayak, before returning to London on Aug 1. She maintained regular contact with her family until Monday, when communication abruptly ceased. Concerned, her family attempted to reach her, only to learn about her untimely demise through the Indian Embassy. The circumstances surrounding the accident remain unclear, but reports suggest that Ankita was involved in a two-wheeler accident and died on the spot. The process of repatriating her body from London to Bhubaneswar is currently underway, after which it will be transported to Rourkela by road. Sampat Nayak, Ankita's younger brother, expressed his profound grief, stating, "We came to know that she died in an accident either on Monday or Tuesday, but we do not know the exact date or how the accident took place." Indian Naval Ship Sandhayak visits Singapore on its National Day
Singapore City [Singapore], August 9 (ANI): Indian Naval Ship Sandhayak, the first indigenous Survey Vessel Large (SVL) with state-of-the-art hydrography capability, entered Singapore on the occasion of its National Day today for a three-day visit. The visit reaffirms India's commitment to regional maritime cooperation and marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral hydrographic ties between the Indian Navy and Singapore's maritime agencies, a Defence Ministry release visit also demonstrates India's growing leadership in maritime diplomacy and regional hydrographic capacity building under the Indian Navy's Hydrographic Department Sandhayak was commissioned in February 2024 in the presence of the Defence Minister. The ship has full-scale coastal and deep-water surveying capacity and is capable of SAR/humanitarian operations with onboard helicopter and hospital maiden visit of the ship to Singapore aims at facilitating technical/ professional exchanges and sustained hydrographic support activities during the visit include call on Gary Chew, Assistant Chief Hydrographer, Singapore and courtesy call on Colonel Chauah Meng Soon, Commander 9th Flotilla, Royal Singapore Navy (RSN) by the Commanding activities include visits from Royal Singapore Navy personnel onboard and showcasing the hydrographic capabilities of the Indian Navy. A visit for school children and families of the Office of High Commissioner of India (HCI) onboard is also scheduled as a part of the visit. (ANI)
