Final Destination: Bloodlines is racing toward a significant box office milestone. On its second Wednesday, the R-rated supernatural horror sequel earned a solid USD 2.1 million at the US box office, a franchise record for a second Wednesday. The figure marks a 48.8 percent drop from its opening Wednesday but comfortably beats 2009's The Final Destination, which took in USD 722K on its second Wednesday with a steeper 57 percent drop.
With a cumulative domestic total of USD 99.1 million, Bloodlines is poised to cross the coveted USD 100 million within hours. That will make it just the tenth horror film released in the post-COVID era to hit that milestone at the US box office. The weekend should push it even further, past Alien: Romulus (USD 105.3M), making it the ninth-highest-grossing post-pandemic horror film domestically.
Additionally, the film is set to enter the all-time top 30 horror earners in the US.
Final Destination: Bloodlines is the sixth entry in the long-running horror franchise and is its most successful to date. Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, and written by Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor, the film introduces a fresh take on the franchise while honoring its legacy.
Kaitlyn Santa Juana leads the cast as a college student who inherits haunting premonitions tied to a near disaster from 1968 through her dying grandmother. As death comes seeking her family, a new deadly chain of events unfolds.
The film's supporting cast is rounded out by Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Anna Lore, Brec Bassinger, and horror veteran Tony Todd. Originally conceived as a streaming property for HBO Max, Warner Bros. Pictures shifted gears and opted for a theatrical rollout, and the move seems to be paying off well. After delays due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, production took place in Vancouver between March and May 2024.
Released stateside on May 16, Final Destination: Bloodlines has earned widespread acclaim for both rebooting and continuing the cult franchise with its clever twists, suspenseful sequences, and emotional core. Globally, the film has grossed an impressive USD 190.9 million, making it not only the best-reviewed but also the highest-grossing entry in the series to date.
With a projected domestic run of USD 125–135 million, Bloodlines has firmly reestablished Final Destination as one of horror's most bankable franchises, proving that the cheating death trope, only to pay for it later, still has a lot of life left in it.

Why defeats and arrest warrant for not wearing hijab won't prevent Sara Khadem from smiling

For a chess player in the middle of a tournament, Sara Khadem smiles a lot. Plenty of players will tell you how much joy they get out of playing the sport of 64 squares. But come tournament time, most players enter a zone of brooding grimness which they refuse to exit even when they're not actually playing on the board. Meals are had in hotel rooms. Interview requests are politely rebuffed. Even eye contact with the world is reduced. Sara, on the other hand, comes across as a breath of fresh air, laughing at jokes with her friends during meals, happy to chat away after games. 'I have been happy even in my worst tournaments,' laughs Sara when asked how she manages to be at ease even in the middle of a tournament as prestigious as Norway Chess — which by her own admission, is the 'strongest women's tournament she has participated in'. 'I might smile, but I might be upset about the game also. But in general, I feel like my life isn't dependent on these games because I'm a happy person in general. If I win this tournament, and if you tell me my life would change, I'd say, 'No, no, it won't.' '(Winning or losing) is not the end of the world. I have had good tournaments. I have had bad ones. It all passes,' says the 28-year-old who understands fully well that life holds the capacity to inflict much harsher cuts than your king getting checkmated. Just days after this conversation, Sara, whose full name is Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, took down Lei Tingjie in round 4 at Norway Chess with black pieces. Sara, who is the only international master competing in the Norway Chess tournament, has seen her life upended a few times over the past decade. The Iran-born player made global headlines in December 2022 when she opted not to wear a hijab during the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships. It was a stand she took partly to protest the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, after she was arrested by the morality police in Tehran. Amini's death led to unprecedented street protests in Iran. Sara's decision to play without the headscarf angered the powers that be and it led to her exile from the country she loved because there was an arrest warrant issued by Iranian authorities against her in January 2023. It was the final nail. Her husband, Ardeshir Ahmadi, who is a filmmaker, TV host and businessman, had spent three months in an Iranian prison in 2015. Sara had also reportedly had her passport confiscated by Iranian authorities for a few months in the past. 'In my chess career I had reached a point that maybe I wasn't sure what I wanted to do,' she admits. 'I was a very motivated player, but at some point I had a travel ban from the Iranian government so I couldn't travel for six months. That was at a point when I was collecting my GM norms, where I was at my peak rating. Then COVID happened, after that I had my baby and we immigrated. These were a lot of changes in my life that made me go very slowly, even backwards! I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue this. But I think tournaments like these give me motivation.' In another country, Sara would have been toasted for her success on the board. She had won the under-12 World Youth Chess Championship just four years after moving her first chess piece. She was also the under-16 World Blitz Chess Champion in 2013, and the under-20 runner-up in classical chess in 2014 when she was 17. 'I was getting support from the people but when you cannot even travel because your own government bans you and they tell you your whole career doesn't matter because we are thinking of something else, then you will reach a point where you don't want to stay,' she says. 'I wouldn't say Iranian chess players were not getting support. Chess is better there than many other countries. Changing the federation was very difficult, because I like to play for Iran, I liked my country, it wasn't about the country.' In one of those moments of frustration, Sara says he told her husband that she will come work with him. 'He was like, 'but what will you do?' I was going to his office, because I couldn't stay home. I had stopped looking at chess. I was thinking, what else can I do with my life? And then COVID happened. But still, taking away your passport is something no one would want,' she adds. Sara is now piecing together her chess career once more after transferring her chess federation from Iran to Spain in July 2023. She laughs as she informs that she has a young boy at home, called Sam, who is angry at her at the moment because she is away playing chess. She says her quest now is to find a balance between chess and her family. 'This is the first long tournament that I'm playing after a long time. I don't want to miss the first years with my son. I know a lot of players care about their careers a lot, but I want to make a balance,' she says with a smile. Amit Kamath is Assistant Editor at The Indian Express and is based in Mumbai. ... Final Destination Bloodlines Day 17 India Box Office: Rs 1.30 crore haul brings film close to Rs 50 crore mark

Final Destination: Bloodlines continued its steady run at the Indian box office today on its 17th day, netting Rs 1.30 crore. With this, the sixth installment in the long-running supernatural horror franchise took its local total to Rs 49.05 crore. Despite a relatively muted start, the film has shown consistent hold over the two weeks and a few additional days in the market, largely driven by genre appeal and positive word of mouth. Here's a day-wise collection breakdown of Final Destination: Bloodlines' India box office so far Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, Final Destination: Bloodlines introduces a fresh narrative while retaining the franchise's signature theme of premonition and inevitable death. The fresh narrative, for those who may not know, refers to the new premise introduced in this installment, featuring the protagonist inheriting visions of a past premonition from 1968. The premonition averted a deadly structural collapse, and now Death is circling back to claim the descendants connected to that event. Earlier installments, meanwhile, featured a random group of people escaping death. Kaitlyn Santa Juana leads the ensemble featuring Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Anna Lore, Brec Bassinger, and franchise veteran Tony Todd. The film is being praised for its refreshing take on the classic formula, clever narrative links to the earlier films, and effective scary sequences. Originally planned as a streaming property for HBO Max, the film's theatrical rollout was greenlit after delays caused by the SAG-AFTRA strike. Shot in Vancouver between March and May 2024, the movie hit US theaters on May 16 and a day before that in India. So far, Bloodlines has grossed USD 193.5 million worldwide, making it not just the highest-grossing but also the best-reviewed entry in the Final Destination series to date. Its performance is being hailed as a franchise revival. The Rs 50 crore milestone in India was locked, which is significant given it was allotted fewer screens due to Mission Impossible 8's parallel release.

Directed by Mani Ratnam, the gangster action drama has justified all the hype among fans and across social media. And now the senior Tamil actor has taken a surprising step ahead of the big theatrical launch of his film. Kamal Haasan appeals for reduced ticket prices in Tamil Nadu After an appeal made by Kamal Haasan regarding the high ticket prices for theaters in Tamil Nadu, the state government has now slashed the LBET (Local Bodies Entertainment Tax) from 8.6 percent to 4. More footfall of audiences will be marked in the theaters now. Why did Kamal Haasan appeal for a reduction of ticket prices? Kamal Haasan pleaded for the reduction of heavy taxes and thereby the cost of theater tickets, owing to the financial struggles faced by the Tamil film industry in recent times, especially post the Covid-19 pandemic. More about Thug Life Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan collaborated for the second time after their film Nayakan back in the day. Actors like Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi and more are a part of the movie.
