Iraq to adopt national policy for small and medium enterprises

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Ministry of Planning held on Wednesday a national validation workshop in Baghdad to examine and approve the first draft of Iraq's National Policy for Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Development. The International Labor Organization (ILO) provided assistance for the event, which was also funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), according to a statement released by the ILO. Iraqi Undersecretary of the Ministry of Planning Hanaa al-Asady stressed that the program lays the groundwork for economic resilience by encouraging innovation and job creation throughout Iraq. ILO Country Coordinator Maha Kattaa underlined the organization's commitment, saying that it is pleased to assist Iraq's efforts to create an inclusive SME environment that supports decent employment, green transformation, and long-term development. The feedback obtained throughout the workshop provided useful insights and practical recommendations, which will be included in the final version of the policy document to ensure it is responsive, practical, and inclusive as it prepares for formal approval and launch. This milestone is part of the ILO's project 'Towards more and better employment through enhanced support to private sectors in southern Iraq—with a focus on green business.' The workshop reaffirmed the country's strong commitment to creating a policy for SME development, inclusive entrepreneurship, and the green transition.

Iraq's electricity production reaches 28,000 megawatts

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, revealed on Thursday that Iraq had set a record energy output of 28,000 megawatts, an unprecedented achievement in the country's history. Fadel noted that, despite the challenges, Iraq has attained peak output because of a well-planned strategy that includes long-term maintenance contracts, power plant renovation, the installation of improved cooling systems, and the partial use of imported fuel, according to a statement released by the Electricity Ministry. The Iraqi electricity minister indicated that the ministry has formed agreements with General Electric (GE) to develop power facilities with a capacity of 24,000 megawatts, as well as with Siemens, a Germany-based company, for an additional capacity of 14,000 megawatts. Fadel also mentioned that an agreement with Shanghai Electric Group is expected to be finalized soon to produce 10,000 megawatts of electricity to meet the increasing demand in the country. While Iran has halted deliveries of the gas required to operate power plants, the Iraqi government is attempting to adopt measures aimed at resolving the current electricity crisis this summer and maintaining a consistent supply of electricity.
