MoU signed for advanced research on Bastar tribals
Raipur, Aug 20 (PTI) Guru Ghasidas Central University and the Delhi-based Tribal Research & Knowledge Centre (TRKC) have signed an MoU, which will pave the way for advanced research on tribal communities of Bastar and Surguja in Chhattisgarh, the state government said on Wednesday.
The collaboration will focus on rich traditions of tribals, cultural heritage, and socio-economic structures, according to a release issued by the government.
The MoU was signed by Prof. Abhay S. Randive, Registrar of Guru Ghasidas Central University, and Rajeev Sharma, Chhattisgarh, in charge of TRKC.
The agreement aims to conduct research activities on tribal communities in the next three years.
Sharma said TRKC plays a vital role in promoting tribal studies across universities and colleges in India.
'With this MoU, the pace of research on Chhattisgarh's tribal communities will significantly accelerate," he said.
He emphasised that the research will explore unexplored dimensions of tribal life, including their ancient traditions, socio-political structures, systems of governance, indigenous entrepreneurship, sustainable development practices, and innovations, according to the release.
Randive highlighted that the MoU will facilitate joint research projects, area-based case studies, and capacity-building programmes for youth, administrators, and tribal stakeholders.
Planned activities include leadership development workshops and certificate courses, guidance sessions for social impact-based start-ups and innovations led by tribal youth, and awareness campaigns within tribal communities.
'The outcomes of these studies will also serve as a foundation for incorporating tribal issues and knowledge systems into academic curricula, thereby providing recognition and scholarly space to Chhattisgarh's tribal legacy," Randive said.
This landmark collaboration marks a step forward in giving Chhattisgarh's indigenous communities a stronger academic identity while ensuring that their traditions, history, and innovations are documented, preserved, and shared with the world, the government stated. PTI COR NSK

Raipur: The 'worsening' pollution levels in Chhattisgarh echoed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday after Raipur MP and senior BJP leader Brijmohan Agrawal raised the matter under rule 377, urging Bhupender Yadav, the Union minister for environment, forest and climate change, to take immediate and concrete action. In his address, Agrawal pointed out that among the 131 non-attainment cities in India—where pollution levels exceed prescribed standards—three are in Chhattisgarh: Raipur, Korba and Bhilai. He added that the situation in Raigarh and Janjgir-Champa is equally alarming. Agrawal noted that Raipur's outskirts—Silatra, Urla, and Borjhara—have developed as major industrial hubs, resulting in abnormally high levels of air and water pollution. "This has had a serious impact on the health and livelihood of local residents," he told the House. He further informed Parliament that the Chhattisgarh environment conservation board had commissioned a comprehensive study of 142 square kilometres of Raipur by the Nagpur-based National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI). Agrawal demanded that the NEERI report be made public and details shared about the steps taken so far based on its recommendations. Calling for a statewide environmental assessment, Agrawal urged the Centre to commission a fresh study to clearly map pollution levels and environmental standards up to 2025. He also stressed the need for biodiversity restoration and afforestation, arguing that this would help cleanse the state's air, water and soil, while ensuring farmers have access to non-contaminated land to boost agricultural output. Concluding his appeal, Agrawal urged minister Yadav to intervene decisively so that "the people of Chhattisgarh can breathe clean air and access safe drinking water," he said. Judge Blocks Trump Admin's Bid To Unseal Jeffrey Epstein's Grand Jury Records
New York: A US judge denied on Wednesday the Justice Department's bid to unseal records from the grand jury that indicted the late financier Jeffrey Epstein on sex trafficking charges. Manhattan-based US District Judge Richard Berman's decision came as President Donald Trump tries to quell discontent from his conservative base of supporters over his administration's handling of the case. Trump, a Republican, had promised to make public Epstein-related files if reelected and accused Democrats of covering up the truth. But in July, the Justice Department declined to release any more material from its investigation of the case and said a previously touted Epstein client list did not exist, angering Trump's supporters. Evidence seen and heard by grand juries, which operate behind closed doors to prevent interference in criminal investigations, cannot be released without a judge's approval. Trump in July instructed Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek court approval for the release of grand jury material from Epstein's case. The grand jury that indicted Epstein heard from just one witness, an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Justice Department said in a court filing in July. Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. He had pleaded not guilty. His death in jail and his friendships with the wealthy and powerful sparked conspiracy theories that other prominent people were involved in his alleged crimes and that he was murdered. The New York City chief medical examiner determined that Epstein's death was a suicide by hanging. On Aug. 11, a different Manhattan-based judge, Paul Engelmayer, denied a similar request by the Justice Department to unseal grand jury testimony and exhibits from the case of Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's longtime girlfriend. Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence following her 2021 conviction for recruiting underage girls for Epstein to abuse. Engelmayer wrote that the public would not learn anything new from the release of materials from Maxwell's grand jury because much of the evidence was made public at her monthlong trial four years ago. The grand jury testimony contained no evidence of others besides Epstein and Maxwell who had sexual contact with minors, Engelmayer wrote. Maxwell had pleaded not guilty. After losing an appeal, she has asked the US Supreme Court to review her case. In July, a Florida judge rejected the administration's request to unseal grand jury records from federal investigations there into Epstein in 2005 and 2007. Epstein served a 13-month sentence after pleading guilty in 2008 to a state-level prostitution charge as part of a deal now widely regarded as too lenient.
