Visitors worried about traffic, accidents with Myrtle Beach emergency vehicle access plan
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) – Some people tell News13 they are worried about traffic and accidents on Ocean Boulevard, now that the Myrtle Beach Police Department's Summer Emergency Vehicle Access Plan (SEVAP) is in full swing.
Myrtle Beach Police say the plan is meant to improve emergency response times, officer visibility, and proactive policing.
The plan is in effect Fridays and Saturdays from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.
The northbound lane of Ocean Blvd is closed between 9th Avenue North and 16th Ave N. The section between 8th and 9th Aves N. is closed in both directions to create an emergency vehicle lane.
Woodrow Turner, a Myrtle Beach visitor, says the city already has summer traffic issues, and the access plan will only make them worse.
'From Thursday through Saturday, you got a lot of people coming in,' Turner said. 'So, the traffic is going to double, triple substantially. It's going to cause a lot of problems.'
Drivers can still use Kings Highway, secondary streets, and parking lots to get to businesses.
But Turner says Friday's traffic did not make that easy.
'It took us a little longer to get to where we were trying to go,' he said. 'So, we ended up having to park a little way's away and then walk to our restaurant.'
Connie Turner says people come to Myrtle Beach to have fun and worry less.
However, she says SEVAP is inconvenient and may even lead to accidents.
'When you're on vacation, you're on that 'vacation mode,'' Connie said. 'People don't pay as close attention as they typically would, I think. So, that's going to cause some problems.'
Most businesses affected by the access plan are hotels. We spoke to many hotel employees, who did not want to go on camera, but say they did not even know about the plan until we spoke.
Although the Turners are not fans of the access plan, they say many drivers do not move over when they hear the emergency sirens.
'I do believe they should have their own lane, but I don't feel like they should inconvenience the residents to make that happen,' Woodrow said.
Myrtle Beach Police recommend using Google Maps and Waze for updated traffic patterns.

Xiang Jiang Claypot Rice: Gingery claypot sesame chicken & claypot rice with salted meat at Lakeside
Xiang Jiang 's 4.2-star rating (330+ reviews) on Google Maps was what interested me the most when discovering its existence in Lakeside. How does a small stall in so ulu a district end up with a score as high as this? On the way to my chosen stall, I pulled up the page once more, as I always do, to prepare myself so that I don't wander into the tasting experience blindly. Although the majority of the reviews were still positive, there were several new-ish ones which complained about a drop in quality and lack of flavour. Hm… Nevertheless, I decided to remain optimistic and try the food with an open mind. Here's a tip when travelling: don't follow Google Maps's directions blindly. I was instructed to travel a whole round by bus, but I alighted earlier than instructed to. All I had to do was cut through some of the HDB blocks to find the Chang Cheng Mee Wah coffeeshop! Xiang Jiang Claypot Rice only accepts cash, which is something I learned only when I had made my way to the counter phone-in-hand. Payments, as it turns out, are to be made only after the food is served directly to your table. I also appreciated that the vendor delivering the dishes noticed I had a friend with me and brought along 2 bowls (and an additional plate for scraps, if any) for our use. The Mixed Claypot Rice (S$9/S$17/S$25/S$30) seemed promising, and I was looking forward to trying it. While the official 2 pax portion cost S$17, we decided to share the S$9 single pax portion to avoid getting too full. At first sight, it didn't seem too bad. Chicken and preserved meats were laid atop the white rice, from which a meaty aroma wafted. The chunks were juicy enough, though I wish that smaller pieces had been mixed throughout rather than big ones just placed on the top. Before digging into the rice, I drizzled some dark soy sauce over it, especially around the edges to season and enhance the crisp. Sadly, the rice itself wasn't that flavourful. I had hoped to taste some five spice, but not even the dark soy sauce helped to provide any extra umami. The grains were hard, too — not tough but possibly a little undercooked. The rice at the bottom was what I would describe as 'unevenly charred'. While I'm a huge fan of crispy rice, especially for such a dish, this one was a miss. Most parts failed to crisp up even after being in contact with the claypot for a long while, and those which did end up tough rather than crunchy. Furthermore, the crunchy bits had a burnt flavour which quite frankly wasn't the best for my tastebuds. Based on observation, the preserved meats included lap cheong, yun cheong (Chinese preserved liver sausage) and salted fish. As a lover of lap cheong, the small amount of the sweet preserved pork sausage saddened me. The black sausage slices, which I soon identified as yun cheong (thanks, Google!) tasted much like lap cheong. It did possess a more powdery texture and tasted strongly of iron, so it wasn't my favourite, though I didn't think too much of it. Of course, the salted fish was salty. There wasn't much to say about it, except that it did add some flavour to the otherwise bland rice. Do watch out for tiny bones while eating this, though – I made the mistake of taking too big a bite out of it. PaeLah: Unique claypot paella from $8.90 in flavours like seafood, kombu & gochujang It was time to try the second dish we ordered from Xiang Jiang Claypot Rice. Will the popular Claypot Sesame Chicken (S$12/S$17) be the redeeming grace for the meal? Before I continued tucking in, I quickly removed any huge chunks of ginger that we could accidentally chomp on. As fragrant as it is, I don't think anyone would appreciate the sudden burst of spice when they expected meat instead. Now this was a dish I could get behind! The chicken was ridiculously moist, and when coated with the rich savoury sauce, it was actually quite palatable. The pieces of meat were large enough, and there was a good portion of them that was enough to be shared between us both. Their ginger and chive aroma and the sauce greatly aided in making the rice more palatable, thank goodness. The only big downside to the dish was the chicken's fattiness, as mildly gelatinous lumps were hidden within every crease of the chunks. I had to spit out the fat and skin in between every bite, as they were mildly off-putting. Despite my initial excitement, I left the coffeeshop feeling a little underwhelmed. Nevertheless, it was sufficient for sustenance, and my companion and I did manage to fill our tummies whilst we updated each other on our lives. The Mixed Claypot Rice was subpar if not for the tender chicken. I had been looking forward to staving off my cravings for crispy claypot rice, but I guess I'll have to look for that in a different place. I'll give the Claypot Sesame Chicken the benefit of the doubt though; it was decently done and I wouldn't mind ordering it again. Exclusive: Sophie Turner on Her Travel Style: ‘I Look Like Hannibal Lecter on the Plane'
Sophie Turner's breakout role as Sansa Stark on the hit fantasy series Game of Thrones made the British actress a household name. And while the HBO show is still binge-worthy years after its finale, Turner is watching something a little lighter when she's in flight. 'If I'm not sleeping, any Real Housewives —I'm binging the whole way. You have to watch it!' she said, listing the Salt Lake City franchise as her favorite, though she's also partial to Potomac and Beverly Hills. Turner sat down with Travel + Leisure to talk about her other travel essentials (beyond the Real Housewives ), her jet lag hacks, and her favorite filming location. Though the Emmy-winning Game of Thrones ended in 2019 after eight globe-trotting seasons, Turner's love of shooting in beautiful, far-flung locations has endured. She has gone on to star in many films, including "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" (2019) and "The Dreadful" (2024), requiring her to travel all over the world. For Turner, one location still stands out: Iceland (one of many notable Game of Thrones filming locations). 'I just found Iceland absolutely astonishingly beautiful, like the landscape with northern lights. It's also that I shot there in the summer when there's something like 22 hours of light, and it was a very bizarre experience. It was just beautiful.' As for other dream filming locations, she would love to work on something in Norway. 'I've never been to Norway, and I would just love to go there. I just think it looks beautiful.' There is a brand that I've been wearing recently called Akimbo Club. What's an item you can't travel without? Compression socks. Even when you're not pregnant, they really do help. Oh, sometimes I bring face masks, like chin masks and lip masks. I look like Hannibal Lecter on the plane, but whatever. Ideal co-star to travel with? That would probably be the entire X-Men cast [which includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult]. We just had the best time flying all over the world on press tours. We had too much fun. Trip you want to take? I've been so lucky to travel to so many places, but I haven't ever gone to New Zealand, and I would love to go there. So, how does she survive an intense travel schedule often packed with long flights? Her moisturizer ("my Weleda Skin Food") and a dip in the closest body of water, she told T+L. 'Whether it's a bath, a pool, an ice bath, whatever it may be. I think it just calms my system down. It also really helps me with jet lag as well. I'm a Pisces, so I just need to be in water. It's like a rejuvenation. It feeds my soul.' For hotel pools, she recommends the Corinthia Hotel in London, but she also loves swimming out in the open, like when she went to Egypt last year and hopped into her new favorite body of water. 'We were on the River Nile, and we all jumped off the boat [into the river], and I think that was probably my favorite.' Another travel must for Turner? Immediately ordering room service when she checks into her hotel room. 'Listen, my go-to order will always be spaghetti with butter and cheese. Kids food, man, it's the best!' the mother of two said with a laugh. Though she orders off the children's menu, she does the very adult thing of immediately unpacking after her room service meal—both routines help with a sense of normalcy. Her final travel staple? A Hugo spritz. 'It absolutely is the spirit of travel,' Turner said. She is such a fan of the cocktail that she has partnered with St-Germain for the second year in a row on a new campaign called 'Sip Into Something Fresher.' 'I can have it anywhere, any time of day. It could be morning, evening, whatever. There's no bounds on where I drink it,' she said, noting she would love airlines to start making this drink part of their cocktail programs. The campaign touts the St-Germain Hugo spritz as the official cocktail of summer, and the brand will have activations in St. Tropez and Cannes. The South of France holds a special place in Turner's heart. 'I've spent a lot of time there. Actually, I got married there [to ex-husband Joe Jonas]. I've got a lot of great memories there, and I really love it. I love the landscape, I love the people, I love the food, I love the drink. I just think it's such a romantic, beautiful, idyllic place.'

Sisters of missing Greg Monks reveal 'alarm bells' moment after disappearance
The sisters of missing man Greg Monks, who disappeared during a stag do in Portugal, have revealed the "alarm bells" moment. The 38-year-old plant mechanic from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, disappeared in the early hours of Wednesday morning, May 28, while out with mates on the Albufeira Strip. However, he never returned. The last confirmed sighting of him was around 3:27am in the Cerro de Aguia area. According to Google Maps, this area is around an hour and 20 minute walk from the main strip in Albufeira. Greg's cousin Alison Fraser posted a statement on Facebook. It reads: 'I'm Greg's cousin and I'm here in Albufeira, this is the last official sighting of Greg at around 3.27am on Wednesday, May 28. 'He was walking by the villa, circling and in the direction of the arrow. Please share, particularly with any local residents' groups.' In an interview with Sky News, Greg's sisters, Jillian and Carlyn, described the family's anguish. Jillian said: "We were contacted on Wednesday afternoon asking if there was any way we could track his phone because he hadn't come home from the night before. "This immediately raised alarm bells. It's just not like him. He wouldn't normally do something like this. "It had only been twelve hours since he was seen, but we were just so worried." Initially, police didn't take the missing person report seriously due to the short time since his disappearance, but as concern mounted, Portuguese authorities escalated the search. Jillian said police have since been 'working day and night' and 'using every resource they can' to find him. CCTV footage has shown Greg walking alone in the Cerro de Aguia area, a quiet, rural part of Albufeira filled with trees, rocks, and cliffs. "The police had said he was seen on CCTV in a residential area, Cerro de Aguia. "He's been spotted twice walking alone on CCTV around there. It's residential and quite rural with a lot of trees and rocks and cliffs." Describing Greg as 'quiet, hardworking, and a great godfather and uncle,' Jillian said his girlfriend Nicole is 'heartbroken and trying to keep it together.' Carlyn added: 'He's a real family man. This just isn't like him. We're trying to hold each other up and keep fighting to find him.' The Glasgow Times reported last week that the family has made a public appeal for anyone in the Cerro de Aguia area with doorbell or home security footage between 2am and 5am on May 28 to come forward. Greg was due to fly back to Scotland on May 30, but he never made the flight. We previously reported that a fundraiser was set up to support the family's search efforts. Our son Greg Monks, 38, went to Portugal for a stag do on Tuesday, May 27. 'On their first night out, our son Greg never returned to his hotel and has now been reported missing for three days. There are professional search teams out looking for Greg, and the family have all flown out to try and help find him, but they don't know how long their stay will be. 'They are doing everything they can. Every donation, no matter the size, will make a difference in our efforts to bring Greg home. 'Thank you for your support and prayers.' The Glasgow Times reported that Greg's disappearance had been reported to police, the hotel where he was staying, and the British Embassy in Portugal by his family. A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said: 'We are supporting the family of a British man reported missing in Portugal and are in contact with the local authorities'.
