HBO Max just added one of the best crime comedy movies ever made — stream it now

"Get Shorty" just got added to HBO Max, and once you're done reading this article, you'll want to boot up the streaming service on your TV and start watching.
To be fair, this is not the first time I've written about "Get Shorty" at Tom's Guide, and it probably won't be the last. This crime comedy movie has an incredible cast, is well-paced and is based on a great Elmore Leonard novel.
In short, what's not to love about it?
But if you're not sold yet, let's dive into what "Get Shorty" is about and why the star-studded cast alone is worth watching one of the greatest crime comedies ever made.
"Get Shorty" starts as a pure gangster movie, with Miami loan shark Chili Palmer (John Travolta) feuding with a rival mobster, Ray "Bones" Barboni (Dennis Farina). But when Bones is suddenly in charge of Chili's operation, the latter finds themselves going out west to hunt down a gambling debt for the former.
His westward venture ultimately leads Chili to Hollywood director Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman), and sensing opportunity, instead of throwing Harry off the Santa Monica Pier, Chili pitches him a movie about Chili's career as a loan shark, with himself attached as a producer.
But he's not the only gangster looking to exploit Harry's role as a Hollywood director to make some money, and there's still the issue of Chili never collecting Bones' money. This leads Chili to have to outmaneuver his boss, some drug lords and the DEA if he wants to get his movie made.

This movie is fun, and it's funny.
Whether it's a rental car service trying to convince Chili that an Oldsmobile Silhouette is "The Cadillac of minivans" or Chili throwing a guy down a set of stairs once he learns the guy is a stuntman, there are clever moments littered throughout this movie that will have you letting out a chuckle.
The aforementioned stuntman, by the way? That's James Gandolfini, and he's just part of this movie's loaded cast.
In addition to Travolta, Hackman, Farina and Gandolfini, "Get Shorty" features Delroy Lindo and Jon Gries as drug dealers/movie investors Bo Catlett and Ronnie Wingate. Rene Russo also stars as scream queen Karen Flores, who is both Travolta and Hackman's love interest.
Finally, Danny DeVito plays Martin Weir, an Academy Award-nominated actor who is interested in playing Chili in the movie Chili is working with Harry to sell.
Now, if you don't find the idea of Danny DeVito playing John Travolta in a movie at least a bit amusing, "Get Shorty" might not be for you.
But if you love any of the actors I just listed off, or any of Leonard's other adapted works like "Justified" or "Jackie Brown," then I promise you'll like this crime comedy movie.

Adam Scott just revealed how long 'Severance' takes to film — and that could be bad news for season 3

At this point, we've been conditioned to wait a long time for "Severance" episodes. The sci-fi thriller debuted on Apple TV Plus on Feb. 18, 2022 ... and then it took another 35 months to get the season premiere of "Severance" season 2. Last month, when I wrote about Apple TV Plus head of programming Matt Cherniss signaling that season 3 could be over a year away, people were bummed, but not exactly shocked. But now we have a clearer picture of why it takes so long for new "Severance" episodes to be made. On yesterday's (Aug. 12) episode of the podcast "Good Hang with Amy Poehler," her former "Parks and Recreation" co-star, and star of "Severance," Adam Scott, sat down with her and revealed just how long it takes to film an episode of the Emmy-nominated show. "Well, it depends," Scott told his former TV wife when asked about how long it takes to film a single episode of the show. "It's long. Season 2, I think it was 186 days for the season. Which is a long time." Scott then broke it down further. "I think one episode took like six weeks and then it's averaged out because we shoot them three at a time, all mixed up together." Season 1 took even longer to film. "Season 1," Scott elaborated, "we shot the entire thing at once. So like, in month nine, we were still shooting scenes from the first episode." Still, Scott believes that this approach to filming multiple episodes at a time works to the benefit of Apple's acclaimed drama. "The accidental thing that that did," he said, referring to season 1, specifically, "You know the first few episodes of any show are a little shaky and everyone is finding their tone a little bit or their characters or whatever? It spread that out over the entire season. So it kind of felt, more or less, fully realized." Scott now joins a long list of people hammering home the point that this show takes a long time to make. Weeks-long shoots for a single episode — half a year spent filming season 2 alone — mean that annual season premieres just aren't feasible. To be fair, nobody has been promising a quick turnaround. Back in March, executive producer Ben Stiller told the ITV morning show "This Morning" that "Severance" season 3 is coming "as fast as possible," but not that it'd be here any time soon. Apple TV Plus gives you access to amazing originals with exciting new shows dropping all summer long. That timeline gets especially drawn out when filming hasn't even started. In his comments last month, Cherniss said that production had yet to begin on "Severance" season 3, meaning if they started filming today, they probably wouldn't even be done filming the next season of the show until the end of winter in 2026. There, admittedly, has been some mixed messaging on that front. While Cherniss says production hasn't started, in January, Stiller gave a production update on season 3 and revealed that the show's creative team was already working on the new season. A month later, in February, Stiller repeated his claim that "Severance" was already back in production, right before Apple officially greenlit season 3. It's entirely possible this is just a case of Cherniss meaning "filming" when he says production, and Stiller referring to the early pre-production work, including writing scripts. If that's the case, both of them are probably telling the truth. But regardless, I can't imagine this show entering post-production until mid-2026, at which point Apple probably holds season 3 for a January or February Apple TV Plus release date in 2027, just like it did for season 1 in 2022 and season 2 in 2025. The new Timothée Chalamet movie trailer is about a sport no one respects

After appearing as music icon Bob Dylan last year, the next project from Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet is technically about sports. The 29-year-old actor impressed fans last year by proving his knowledge as a sports fan while appearing on ESPN's College GameDay. He correctly predicted upsets and genuinely seemed like a lot of fun joking around on set. During the exciting postseason run for the New York Knicks, he was also a fixture at Madison Square Garden, even sharing a fun moment with Karl-Anthony Towns. Hopefully, he got a second to pick Towns' brain about what it's like to be a wildly disrespected athlete, because that is exactly what Chalamet will portray in his next film. More: Timothée Chalamet was offered Stephen A. Smith mentorship for an ESPN career The first trailer for the upcoming A24 project Marty Supreme released on Wednesday and it looks wild. Here is what you need to know: "Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness." That dream, it seems, is to become a ping pong star so big that he will appear on the cover of Wheaties boxes. This is the first project from Josh Safdie (Good Time and Uncut Gems) in his solo directorial debut. Chalamet will lead in the first billing but Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Kevin O'Leary (from Shark Tank), and Tyler, The Creator (as Tyler Okonma) will co-star.
