Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre becomes a Ramadan destination for Iftars

Muscat Daily09-03-2025

Muscat – The Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) has established itself as the premier venue for corporate iftars in Oman, hosting some of the country's leading companies under its annual Layali Al Irfan campaign. This year, OCEC is expanding its offerings with public iftars in the stunning Exhibition Gardens, allowing visitors to break their fast outdoors, in a serene and green environment.
In collaboration with the five-star JW Marriott hotel, OCEC continues to provide tailored indoor iftar experiences for companies in Oman in its Junior and Grand Ballrooms as well as exhibition halls. In the first two weeks of Ramadan only, the venue is already booked out by major organisations including Ahli Bank, OQEP, the Ministry of Awqaf & Religious Affairs, Towell Group, Muscat Private Hospital, Abraj Energy Services, and OMRAN Group for exclusive gatherings. With its one-stop-shop services, OCEC ensures seamless experience, managing every aspect of event planning from catering to décor.
A highlight this year is the introduction of outdoor public iftars, a direct response to OCEC's growing popularity as a Ramadan hub, particularly during Eid shopping events. Hundreds of SMEs are set to exhibit at consumer shows like Dar Al Atta'a Exhibition (6–8 March) and Chic Expo (19–22 March), drawing large crowds to the venue. The public iftar, organised in partnership with Go Kiks, offers a serene dining experience with convenient access to the exhibition area. Visitors can enjoy a curated menu, blending traditional Ramadan dishes with contemporary flavours, all in a relaxed, simple, open-air setting.
As part of its CSR efforts, OCEC has partnered with Dar Al Atta'a to provide vouchers for exhibition staff, ensuring they can break their fast without disrupting their work. A donation screen will also be placed in the public iftar tent to support charitable contributions, allowing guests to give back to the community during the holy month.
Additionally, OCEC is also the host venue to the Layali Al Irfan Festival, organised by OMRAN Group from 4 to 30 March. The festival will feature over 50 local entrepreneurs showcasing their products, along with family-friendly entertainment, prize draws, a sports zone, interactive gaming sessions, and live performances, further enhancing the venue's role as a key Ramadan destination.
Eng. Said Al Shanfari, CEO of OCEC, commented: 'This year, our team has gone above and beyond to create an inclusive Ramadan experience for both corporate and public guests. The versatility of our venue and the creativity of our staff continue to make OCEC the leading choice for impactful iftar events. We are proud to offer a setting that brings people together in the spirit of Ramadan, whether for business gatherings or community celebrations.'
Public iftars will run until 22 March, with bookings required at www.layalialirfan.om. Prices are 10 OMR per adult, 6 OMR for children aged 7–12, and free for children under 6. Corporates can book their iftars by contacting [email protected].

Art on track: Al Hoota's old train gets vivid makeover

Muscat – In a unique blend of public art and tourism promotion, the out-of-service train at Al Hoota Cave has now been transformed into a vibrant graffiti mural, thanks to the creative vision of Omani street artist Abdulmalik Sultan al Maskari. The 19m-long train, previously installed at the entrance to one of Oman's most iconic natural attractions, now stands as a vivid gateway, adorned with images of the cave's dramatic rock formations and native wildlife. Speaking exclusively to Muscat Daily, Maskari said, 'The idea was not easy at all. The train was long, unused, and the surface was difficult to work on. But I love challenges, so I decided – along with a group of my friends – to turn it into a visual delight that supports national tourism.' The project began on October 10, 2024, and was completed on November 10, 2024. The transformation unfolded over several weekends with support from Maskari's brothers and close friends. Backed by Omran Group – particularly its Youth and Cultural Projects Department – the initiative aimed to enhance the visitor experience by merging art, nature, and culture into one compelling installation. The final artwork draws inspiration from the natural colours and terrain of the cave, encouraging visitors to interact, take photos, and share their experience. 'Graffiti art grabs attention instantly,' Maskari said. 'When visitors see the train, the vivid images spark curiosity. It's an invitation to explore the cave's hidden beauty.' Creating the artwork under Oman's sweltering summer sun posed major challenges. 'Transforming a metal train in that heat was no easy task,' he noted. 'We had to use special tools and materials to ensure that the colours adhered properly to the metal surface. We also coordinated closely with the site's management to avoid disrupting visitors.' Maskari added, 'When we get permission to spray outdoors, there is always a message in the murals. I personally put deep thought into my work. I prefer quiet colours – especially shades of blue – because I want the public to feel calm rather than overwhelmed. Art should relax, not stress.' With his graffiti journey that began in 2007, Maskari has participated in numerous major art initiatives, both locally and abroad. These include creating a large-scale mural in Mina Zayed, UAE, in collaboration with international artists, as well as landmark projects in Oman at hotel W Muscat, Al Mouj Marina, commercial venues, gyms, and various public spaces. He had also taken part in the Frankincense Tree Exhibition at Zubair Foundation. Looking ahead, Maskari hopes this project will inspire a broader movement to promote Oman's diverse landmarks through public art. 'My dream is to expand this initiative to other sites – castles, old souqs, natural reserves – anywhere that showcases the richness of Oman's culture and heritage. Art is a universal language, and through it, we can tell the world about the beauty of our country.' Maskari expressed gratitude to his brothers – Abdulsalam Sultan Said al Maskari and Abdullah Sultan Said al Maskari – and his friends Qusai Ali Saif al Musallami and Saeed Salem Said al Naabi, whose support and dedication were instrumental in bringing the project to life.

Ahli Bank halts merger talks, revives OMR 50m capital plan

MUSCAT: Ahli Bank SAOG has announced the postponement of its proposed merger with Sohar International Bank SAOG due to a lack of necessary regulatory approvals, the lender disclosed in a market statement on Sunday. The Board of Directors of Ahli Bank resolved to suspend further discussions with Sohar International until further notice. The merger proposal, initially announced in April 2025, was part of a broader consolidation trend in Oman's banking sector aimed at improving operational scale and competitiveness. 'In light of this development,' the bank stated, 'and in alignment with the Bank's capital planning objectives, the Board has also resolved to proceed with a capital increase through a rights issue of OMR 50 million.' This capital raise, previously announced and later suspended due to the merger talks, is now being revived. Ahli Bank confirmed it will undertake all necessary steps to implement the rights issue, including seeking required regulatory approvals. The bank reiterated its commitment to transparency, stating: 'Ahli Bank will continue to disclose any material developments to the market in accordance with applicable laws and disclosure regulations.'
