Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre becomes a Ramadan destination for Iftars

Muscat Daily09-03-2025
Muscat – The Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) has established itself as the premier venue for corporate iftars in Oman, hosting some of the country's leading companies under its annual Layali Al Irfan campaign. This year, OCEC is expanding its offerings with public iftars in the stunning Exhibition Gardens, allowing visitors to break their fast outdoors, in a serene and green environment.
In collaboration with the five-star JW Marriott hotel, OCEC continues to provide tailored indoor iftar experiences for companies in Oman in its Junior and Grand Ballrooms as well as exhibition halls. In the first two weeks of Ramadan only, the venue is already booked out by major organisations including Ahli Bank, OQEP, the Ministry of Awqaf & Religious Affairs, Towell Group, Muscat Private Hospital, Abraj Energy Services, and OMRAN Group for exclusive gatherings. With its one-stop-shop services, OCEC ensures seamless experience, managing every aspect of event planning from catering to décor.
A highlight this year is the introduction of outdoor public iftars, a direct response to OCEC's growing popularity as a Ramadan hub, particularly during Eid shopping events. Hundreds of SMEs are set to exhibit at consumer shows like Dar Al Atta'a Exhibition (6–8 March) and Chic Expo (19–22 March), drawing large crowds to the venue. The public iftar, organised in partnership with Go Kiks, offers a serene dining experience with convenient access to the exhibition area. Visitors can enjoy a curated menu, blending traditional Ramadan dishes with contemporary flavours, all in a relaxed, simple, open-air setting.
As part of its CSR efforts, OCEC has partnered with Dar Al Atta'a to provide vouchers for exhibition staff, ensuring they can break their fast without disrupting their work. A donation screen will also be placed in the public iftar tent to support charitable contributions, allowing guests to give back to the community during the holy month.
Additionally, OCEC is also the host venue to the Layali Al Irfan Festival, organised by OMRAN Group from 4 to 30 March. The festival will feature over 50 local entrepreneurs showcasing their products, along with family-friendly entertainment, prize draws, a sports zone, interactive gaming sessions, and live performances, further enhancing the venue's role as a key Ramadan destination.
Eng. Said Al Shanfari, CEO of OCEC, commented: 'This year, our team has gone above and beyond to create an inclusive Ramadan experience for both corporate and public guests. The versatility of our venue and the creativity of our staff continue to make OCEC the leading choice for impactful iftar events. We are proud to offer a setting that brings people together in the spirit of Ramadan, whether for business gatherings or community celebrations.'
Public iftars will run until 22 March, with bookings required at www.layalialirfan.om. Prices are 10 OMR per adult, 6 OMR for children aged 7–12, and free for children under 6. Corporates can book their iftars by contacting [email protected].

Sohar court jails trader for consumer law breaches

Muscat: The Primary Court in Sohar has recently issued five judicial rulings against a defendant in favor of several consumers, sentencing him to imprisonment and financial fines for violations of the Consumer Protection Law No. (66/2014). The cases originated from complaints filed with the Consumer Protection Department in North Al Batinah Governorate against a commercial establishment specializing in the fabrication and installation of doors, windows, and glass partitions. Consumers reported that they had signed contracts with the company to complete the work within a specific timeframe. However, the establishment failed to honor the agreements and delayed execution. Following the complaints, the Directorate undertook the necessary legal procedures. After compiling the case files, they were referred to the Public Prosecution in Sohar, which investigated the matters and forwarded them to the competent court. The court subsequently convicted the defendant of failing to provide services properly and in accordance with their nature, as stipulated in Article (23) of the Consumer Protection Law. The rulings included both prison sentences and financial penalties. The Directorate of Consumer Protection in North Al Batinah affirmed that these judgments highlight the importance of credibility, transparency, and integrity in dealing with consumers, stressing that providers must comply with their legal obligations under the Consumer Protection Law. In a related development, the Consumer Protection Authority in Muscat successfully recovered an amount of OMR 2,260 for a consumer following a complaint against a construction and building materials company. The consumer had paid in advance for cement products that were not delivered on time. Through the Authority's intervention, the matter was amicably resolved, and the full amount was refunded. The Authority reiterated its commitment to safeguarding consumers from commercial fraud, ensuring the quality of products and services, and called on suppliers to strictly adhere to approved standards and technical requirements. It also urged consumers to report any violations through its official channels, affirming that consumer rights remain a top priority and that monitoring teams are always prepared to act against any practices that compromise consumer safety or rights.

Oman steps up global push for local products

MUSCAT – Oman's Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) intensified efforts to expand the international presence of Omani products in the first half of 2025, achieving growth in both exports and trade partnerships. Through its Export Development Department 'Oman Exports,' the ministry organised and participated in five specialised trade exhibitions under the Omani Products Promotion Committee (OPEX), which also includes the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Madayn, and the SME Development Authority (Riyada). The drive targeted wider recognition of Omani goods by hosting global importers, arranging business meetings, and running promotional campaigns. The Baghdad International Fair in February brought together 30 Omani companies, with 70% signing distribution contracts and 67% securing new export orders. At Gulfood in Dubai, 75% of 10 participating Omani firms concluded confirmed deals, while 91% entered ongoing negotiations. May's Saudi Food Show in Riyadh saw 14 companies showcase products, complementing Oman Vision 2040 and Saudi Vision 2030. Locally, Horeca Oman highlighted food and hospitality opportunities. The campaign culminated with Oman's participation as Guest of Honour at the Algiers International Fair in June, where President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Minister Qais bin Mohammed Al Yousef inaugurated a 900 sqm Omani pavilion featuring over 60 institutions. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information, Oman's non-oil exports rose 7.2% in Q2 2025 to OMR 2.701 billion. The UAE led importers with a 22.9% rise to OMR 485 million, followed by Saudi Arabia at OMR 451 million (+34.9%) and India at OMR 280 million (+38.9%), alongside strong demand from South Korea and the United States. 'These positive indicators reflect the success of national efforts to enhance export competitiveness and open new markets,' said Fares bin Nasser Al-Farsi, Head of Oman Exports at MoCIIP. He added that support mechanisms include international promotion, streamlined procedures, and activation of trade agreements. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the 'Made in Oman' brand, diversifying the production base, and increasing SME participation in exports as part of achieving Oman Vision 2040.
