Pirate anime flag becomes tool of protest ahead of Indonesia's Independence Day

August 5, 2025
JAKARTA – The red-and-white national flag is a common feature to be found ahead of the country's Independence Day, adorning roads and houses across the country.
But this year, a flag from a popular Japanese anime One Piece has reportedly been spotted in various spots and events instead of the national flag, which has prompted the government's ire.
The 'Jolly Roger' pirate flag, showcasing a skull with a straw hat on a black background, has been touted by social media users as a symbol of their discontent at the state of Indonesia's democracy, amid various issues currently ailing the country.
'The red-and-white flag is too sacred for us to raise right now, at a time when many people are still colonized by those in power,' an X user posted last Thursday.
The user added that the One Piece flag represented 'the spirit of resistance against injustice' that mars the country.
The sentiment was shared by thousands of other social media users, one of whom also recreated the 80th Independence Day logo in the style of the One Piece flag.
The movement has since prompted stern reactions from the government and the House of Representatives, who deemed the flying of the flag it a 'provocative' act that attempts to fragment Indonesia's unity.
'We have received information from security agencies that there are indeed [systematic] efforts to divide the nation's unity [through the One Piece movement],' House Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said on Thursday, as quoted by Antara.
In a press statement a day later, Coordinating Politics and Security Minister Budi Gunawan warned residents who raised One Piece flags on Independence Day of the 'criminal consequences' of their actions.
Budi cited the prevailing 2009 law on national flags, which criminalizes insults to the national flag.
Civil societies have since rebuked the government's statement over the flag and noted that it should simply be taken as a form of criticism against the government's performance.
Muhamad Isnur of rights group the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) said that as long as people raise the One Piece flags just below the red-and-white flags, there should be no concern over its existence.
'The flag is a sign of the residents' love for the country and participation in democracy. It needs to be honored instead of being perceived as an act of treason, which is terribly misguided,' Isnur said on Saturday.
He further noted how the flag, which is derived from a widely beloved anime, was not different from flags of mass organizations or football clubs that people raised out of their love for each institution.

German foreign minister urges more pressure on Russia before Trump–Zelenskiy meeting

Wadephul spoke in Tokyo as U.S. President Donald Trump prepares to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European leaders including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The gathering follows Trump's talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. "It is probably not an exaggeration to say the whole world is looking to Washington," he said at a press briefing alongside Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya. "Firm security guarantees are central" because "Ukraine must be able to defend itself effectively even after a ceasefire and peace agreement," he added. Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other European leaders met Sunday to bolster Zelenskiy's hand ahead of the White House meeting. They welcomed U.S. talk of a security guarantee for Ukraine but said Kyiv must be included in any territorial talks and its remaining land protected. REUTERS

German minister says China ‘increasingly aggressive'

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Mr Wadephul also criticised 'China's support for the Russian war machine' in Ukraine. TOKYO - Germany's foreign minister hit out on Aug 18 at what he called China's repeated threats to 'unilaterally change' borders in the Asia-Pacific region, calling Beijing 'increasingly aggressive'. 'China repeatedly threatens, more or less openly, to unilaterally change the status quo and shift borders in its favour,' Mr Johann Wadephul said in Japan, citing China's behaviour in the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas. 'Any escalation in this sensitive hub of international trade would have serious consequences for global security and the world economy,' Mr Wadephul said after talks with Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya. A statement issued on Aug 17 before Mr Wadephul's visit to Japan – and later Indonesia – said that China was 'increasingly asserting its regional supremacy and, in doing so, is also questioning principles of international law.' 'China's increasingly aggressive behaviour in the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas also has implications for us in Europe: fundamental principles of our global coexistence are at stake here,' the statement quoted Mr Wadephul as saying. In the joint press statement in Tokyo, Mr Wadephul also criticised 'China's support for the Russian war machine' in Ukraine. 'Without it, the war of aggression against Ukraine would not be possible. China is Russia's largest supplier of dual-use goods and Russia's best oil and gas customer,' Mr Wadephul said. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Mr Trump's summit on Aug 15 with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska 'made it clear that for a just and lasting peace, Moscow must finally act. Until that happens, pressure on Russia must be increased, including with increased aid to Ukraine,' Mr Wadephul said. The talks on Aug 18 in Washington are about establishing 'the elements of a negotiated solution on the path to a just peace for Ukraine,' he said. 'Firm security guarantees are crucial for this. Because Ukraine must be able to defend itself effectively even after a ceasefire and peace agreement.' AFP

Indonesian President Prabowo leads first Independence Day ceremony in Jakarta

August 18, 2025 JAKARTA – President Prabowo Subianto led the 80th Independence Day ceremony in Jakarta on Sunday, his first Aug. 17 celebration since taking office as the country's head of state last year. The festive ceremony at the State Palace in Central Jakarta was attended by high-ranking officials, foreign dignitaries, veterans and more than 8,000 regular citizens who were lucky enough to make the audience quota. The palace previously opened public registration for people wishing to attend the event, with the quota being filled within hours. Sunday's ceremony began with a cultural parade carrying replicas of the original Red-and-White flag and the Proclamation of Independence text from the National Monument (Monas) to the State Palace. The procession featured hundreds of security officers on motorcycles and horses, as well as military and police academy drum band personnel dressed in traditional attire. At around 9:50 a.m., Prabowo, dressed in an off-white traditional Malay outfit, started the flag-hoisting ceremony by reading the Independence Proclamation, before handing over the Red-and-White Flag to the national flag-hoisting squad (Paskibraka). After the ceremony, the celebrations continued with an air show performed by among other aircraft eight Air Force F-16 fighter jets and a host of cultural performances, including traditional dances and a showcase of pencak silat traditional martial art. Among the attendees at Sunday's ceremony were former presidents Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo, who came to the palace with his wife Iriana. They sat next to Prabowo and across from Vice President, and Jokowi's eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Also attending the ceremony were former vice presidents Try Sutrisno, Jusuf Kalla, Boediono and Ma'ruf Amin. Indonesia's fifth president Megawati Soekarnoputri, who came to the palace on Saturday to officiate this year's Paskibraka squad as head of the Agency for the Implementation of the State Ideology Pancasila's (BPIP) steering committee, did not attend Sunday's ceremony. Megawati, who chairs the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), opted instead to attend an Independence Day ceremony held by the party in its office in South Jakarta. PDI-P secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto said that Megawati 'wanted' to celebrate Independence Day with all party members. Megawati also did not attend the annual People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) plenary meeting at the Senayan legislative complex in Jakarta on Friday, when Prabowo delivered his first State of the Nation address. The PDI-P is the largest party in the government-dominated House of Representatives and the only party outside of Prabowo's ruling coalition. Her ties with Prabowo have warmed of late despite the PDI-P's feud with Jokowi, a one-time party member who broke ranks to support Prabowo's presidential bid last year. During the party's congress earlier this month, Megawati announced the nationalist party would act as the 'constitutional counterbalance' to government policies. The palace is slated to hold a flag-lowering ceremony on Sunday afternoon, followed by the 'Independence Carnival' parade in the evening. Prabowo is expected to see off the start of the parade, as decorated cars representing various government institutions will wind through the main roads of Central Jakarta. Public enthusiasm surged ahead of the Independence Day celebration, the first time for the government to allocate a majority of audience spots for the ceremony to the general public. Public registration for some 6,400 spots opened on Aug. 4 and quickly reached capacity, prompting organizers to add up to 2,000 more slots in a second round of registration on Aug. 7.
