I work teaching creative writing at the University of Alberta, and I'm in the middle of wrapping up our workshops for undergraduate short fiction. So I've been reading a lot of undergraduate short stories — some are incredible. I also just finished the judging for the CBC short story contest, so I've been going through the long list of those stories as well — it was really fun to see what was brought forward throughout Canada. So my reading has been pretty short story heavy for the last couple of months.

When I'm in the process of trying to build out a new novel, which I finished up back in January, I tend to not read as much, and to just try to centre myself within the story that I'm creating. I find I can't find my focus to the same extent.

But prior to that, one of the cool books I read was Big Chief by Jon Hickey, which just came out, as well as I think my favorite book of poetry ever, which is Xanax Cowboy by Winnipeg's Hannah Green. I try to give everyone that book. I've probably given away eight copies. I also read Kyle Edwards' Small Ceremonies; it was one of my favorite books I've read in the last little bit. Oh, and I really enjoyed Coexistence, Billy-Ray Belcourt's new book of short stories.

Cason Wallace starts Game 1 for Thunder, taking Isaiah Hartenstein's spot
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Cason Wallace got the call to start Game 1 of the NBA Finals for the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night, taking the place of Isaiah Hartenstein. The Thunder had used the same starting five — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Hartenstein — for each of the 16 games needed to get through the Western Conference playoffs. At 21 years and seven months, Wallace is the youngest player to start an NBA Finals game since Miami's Tyler Herro — then about 20 years and 9 months — started for the Heat in their series inside the bubble against the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. Wallace started 43 games in the regular season for the Thunder. He had appeared in 26 playoff games over his first two NBA seasons with Oklahoma City, but Thursday's series opener against the Indiana Pacers was his first playoff start. Wallace averaged 8.4 points in the regular season and has averaged 5.4 in the playoffs coming into the finals. Ray strikes out 9 and becomes NL's first 8-game winner as Giants beat Padres 3-2
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Robbie Ray struck out nine in seven innings and became the National League's first eight-game winner as the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Thursday. Ray (8-1) allowed two runs and four hits with a walk. The 33-year-old left-hander retired the side in order four times and didn't allow a runner past first base in his final four innings. The 2021 AL Cy Young Award winner struck out four of the first five hitters he faced and retired 11 in a row after Manny Machado's homer run in the third. Randy Rodriguez retired three betters and Camilo Doval set down three for his eighth save. Dominic Smith had three hits, including a two-run ground-rule double that drove in the go-ahead run in the third. Machado hit his 350th career homer and had two RBIs for the Padres. San Diego had runners at second and third in the ninth before Doval struck out Jake Cronenworth swinging. The Giants stranded three runners in the first two innings before finally getting to Padres starter Dylan Cease (1-5) in the third. Willy Adames had a sacrifice fly before Smith hit a drive to center that bounced on the warning track and bounded over the wall, plating two runs. Cease allowed three runs and had seven strikeouts. Soderstrom hits grand slam, 2-run HR to help Athletics beat Twins 14-3 and snap 9-game skid
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Tyler Soderstrom hit a grand slam and a two-run homer, Max Muncy hit a three-run shot in the first inning, and the Athletics beat the Minnesota Twins 14-3 on Thursday to snap a nine-game losing streak. Brent Rooker had three hits, three RBIs and scored three runs for the Athletics. David Festa (0-1), who was recalled earlier Thursday from Triple-A St. Paul, pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up seven runs for Minnesota. Jorge Alcala came on after Lawrence Butler drew a two-out walk in the fourth and gave up a single to Jacob Wilson, before Rooker walked and Soderstrom's slam made it 11-0. Mitch Spence (2-1) gave up a run on three hits over five innings for the Athletics. Wilson hit a lead-off homer before Soderstrom's two-run shot made it 7-0 in the third. Matt Wallner hit a solo shot in the fourth and Ty France and Brooks Lee each added an RBI single in the seventh. Infielder Jonah Bride made his MLB pitching debut and gave up two runs in two innings.
