CBFC greenlights Aamir Khan's ‘Sitaare Zameen Par' after dispute

The Hindu5 hours ago

After weeks of uncertainty, Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par has secured clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), paving the way for its theatrical release on June 20, 2025. The approval follows reports of a behind-the-scenes tussle over proposed cuts, which had sparked speculation about a potential delay.
Described as a spiritual successor to Khan's 2007 hit Taare Zameen Par, the film ran into a roadblock when the CBFC reportedly requested two edits that the actor-producer was reluctant to implement. A source familiar with the matter shared, 'Aamir Khan feels the film should be passed without these cuts. He and director R.S. Prasanna have made the film with a lot of thought. Certain scenes and dialogues, when seen in context, seem completely appropriate.'
While neither the CBFC nor Khan officially disclosed details of the requested cuts, insiders confirm that the matter was resolved following further discussions between Khan, Prasanna, and the CBFC Examining Committee. With certification in hand, advance bookings for Sitaare Zameen Par are expected to open soon.
Directed by R.S. Prasanna, the drama follows a determined coach, played by Khan, who mentors ten people on the spectrum into forming a basketball team. The film also stars Genelia Deshmukh and introduces several young talents, including Aroush Datta and Simran Mangeshkar.
Interestingly, the British Censor Board had already cleared Sitaare Zameen Par with a 12A certificate. The film runs for 2 hours and 35 minutes and is an official remake of the Spanish hit Champions.
