What to do in Cape Town this Workers' Day 'long weekend'
With the public holidays coming thick and fast at the moment, many have a long weekend coming up - if you remembered to take Friday off, that is.
Thursday, 1 May, is Workers' Day in South Africa. The public holiday has been observed since 1994 and 'serves both as a celebration of workers' rights and as a reminder of the critical role that trade unions, the Communist Party and other labour organisations played in the fight against apartheid,' writes the South African Government's website.
If you are looking to explore Cape Town this public holiday and try something different to your normal routine, below we have some ideas for you to consider.
First Thursdays
Tap into your cultural side on Thursday, 1 May, as the ever-popular First Thursdays shows off all things artsy and tasty in Cape Town. Explore Cape Town's best galleries like The Artists Gallery and Eclectica Contemporary as they stay open later than usual, before grabbing a bite to eat and a tasty drink or two at the likes of Tjing Tjing House and Ramenhead. If you fancy trying a different First Thursdays experience, the Stellenbosch edition launches on Thursday and it promises to be a jol of note.

Hit the caves... for some golf
With schools closed, you'll need to think of something to do with the little ones this 'long weekend'. Cave Golf is a super cool activity for the family and can be found at the V&A Waterfront and in Simon's Town. It can be challenging, but is also really fun, with the light-up balls adding to the adventure of playing golf inside a cave! Once you're done nailing those putts, both locations have a Scratch Patch, which the kids love as they can find a hidden treasure or two (play along, parents).
Grab a 2 for 1 special on Thursday
Why not take advantage of a special on a meal out this Workers' Day? From a delicious prego roll to burgers, sushi and more, there are a few options for you to take advantage of. Mum's surprise as son's rare blond hair goes viral on TikTok
Saoirse Ina Havelaar, 22, welcomed baby son Lewis on January 20 and he quickly shot to fame on social media for his rare blond hair A baby has gone viral on TikTok after being born with a full head of blond hair. When Saoirse Ina Havelaar gave birth to son, Lewis, she says she barely noticed his stunning locks. But within weeks his unusual colouring and full head of hear, seen in just 2% of children, saw him become an internet sensation. Lewis was born, at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle on January 20. The 22-year-old, who is originally from Dublin was told by medical professionals that her son's hair would either change colour or fall out. However this hasn't been the case," reports Chronicle Live. She shared: "Lewis was born two days early, and on my way to hospital I was worried he would have no hair, but he is such a beautiful baby. When he was first born, I didn't even notice the hair, I just cared about my baby. "It wasn't until we were alone on the ward that I really saw how much of it there was. I'm very surprised that he hasn't lost any of it, it has actually just stayed really blonde and is a completely full head of hair. "I think seeing people's reaction on social media has made me realise how rare it is. I am loving the positivity that we are getting." She added: "He is now 20 weeks old, and I am with him every single day. I always get stopped by people about his hair. "Whether I am dropping my daughter off at school, shopping or on the Metro, people say they have seen him on Facebook or TikTok and wanted to say hello." "This has been really special for me. With my daughter, I didn't realise just how fast they grow up, so I have been able to document every day of his life so far which has been amazing. "I have been sharing things with my friends and family and with everyone else on social media. The reception has been so heart-warming."

Historic Scottish castle with 800-year history put on market on sale
The Shieldhill Castle Hotel, near Biggar in Lanarkshire, is on the market along with 6.5 acres of land for offers in the region of £1.5 million. Agents Graham and Sibbald described the country house as an 'outstanding 30-bedroom hotel' that is an hour outside both Edinburgh and Glasgow. It also has a 'Nelson Mandela' tree in its grounds to mark the former South African leader's visit in 1997. READ MORE: 'First in Scotland': New 'free' store opens in Glasgow shopping centre The agency said: 'A house has stood at Shieldhill on its present site overlooking the Clyde Valley and Lanarkshire hills for over 800 years. 'It originally dates back to 1199, and parts of the original remain, but it is the 18th and 19th Century additions to the main property that predominate. 'The house has been occupied since 1560, mainly by the Chancellor family, who it was that sold the property in 1959. It was then that Shieldhill metamorphosed into hotel use.' Additional rooms are in the castle's stable block (Image: Graham and Sibbald) Sixteen of the hotel's bedrooms are within the main building. There are additional two chalets and a stable block with 10 further rooms. Hotel and leisure consultant Alistair Letham, from Graham and Sibbald, said: 'Shieldhill has been a feature in the country house hotel sector in southern Scotland for many years. 'The availability of Shieldhill Castle Hotel presents a wonderful opportunity to acquire an established country house hotel, in good order, with excellent business development prospects.' You can find more information on the Graham and Sibbald website.
