Time Out30-04-2025

With the public holidays coming thick and fast at the moment, many have a long weekend coming up - if you remembered to take Friday off, that is.
Thursday, 1 May, is Workers' Day in South Africa. The public holiday has been observed since 1994 and 'serves both as a celebration of workers' rights and as a reminder of the critical role that trade unions, the Communist Party and other labour organisations played in the fight against apartheid,' writes the South African Government's website.
If you are looking to explore Cape Town this public holiday and try something different to your normal routine, below we have some ideas for you to consider.
First Thursdays
Tap into your cultural side on Thursday, 1 May, as the ever-popular First Thursdays shows off all things artsy and tasty in Cape Town. Explore Cape Town's best galleries like The Artists Gallery and Eclectica Contemporary as they stay open later than usual, before grabbing a bite to eat and a tasty drink or two at the likes of Tjing Tjing House and Ramenhead. If you fancy trying a different First Thursdays experience, the Stellenbosch edition launches on Thursday and it promises to be a jol of note.

Hit the caves... for some golf

It can be challenging, but is also really fun, with the light-up balls adding to the adventure of playing golf inside a cave! Once you're done nailing those putts, both locations have a Scratch Patch, which the kids love as they can find a hidden treasure or two (play along, parents).
Grab a 2 for 1 special on Thursday

Donald Trump labelled 'embarrassment' after 'baffling' move amid LA protests

Unrest continues in LA, and matters appear to have become worse over the weekend, but President Trump has been labelled an "embarassment" following a "baffling" move Outrage has sparked against President Donald Trump for what many are calling a "totally baffling" decision amidst escalating protests in Los Angeles. The city witnesses turmoil, symbolised by a bare-chested man hoisting a Mexican flag on a blazing car and another lobbing a traffic cone into the flames. Witnessed by Americans across the nation, downtown LA has morphed into a vision of anarchy and disorder as initial peaceful demonstrations took an ominous turn. This backdrop of upheaval has seen Trump attracting flak for making an absolutely bewildering move amid the chaos - and he's since been deemed an "embarrassment." ‌ On Sunday, with the situation in LA deteriorating, the White House's Instagram account flaunted photos of President Trump at the UFC 316 event on Saturday night at the Prudential Centre, posting them with the caption: "President Donald J. Trump at @UFC 316 @DanaWhite." ‌ Joined by UFC President Dana White, Trump was seen striding to his ringside spot at UFC 316 to the tunes of Kid Rock's "American Bad A**'" Notably, this appearance mirrors their attendance at a UFC event in November at Madison Square Garden, which was also attended by Elon Musk. While Trump was busy greeting fans at the event, the snaps circulating online have sparked less than enthusiastic reactions. Many believe he should be tackling the nation's issues rather than attending such gatherings during these tumultuous times. One individual remarked: "Is this is to distract you from what's going on in LA with ICE and the National Guard, and the bill that will add trillions to our debt?" Another commented: "Doing anything but working." A third sarcastically added: "Glad he's focused on what's important right now. Reality TV star." Meanwhile, fourth person also shared their dismay: "Such an embarrassment." Another joined in, saying: "This guy is busy watching UFC while his country falls apart - unreal." ‌ Although some of Trump's supporters offered praise, many were disgruntled by the images shared. Furthermore, a significant number of Trump's detractors are incensed by his audacious move to send National Guard troops to LA, defying the state governor's preferences, which they argue has only heightened tensions. Over the weekend, the 101 Freeway was shut for the majority of the day due to clashes between police and demonstrators. The confrontations resulted in objects being hurled at the police, who retaliated with tear gas and rubber bullets. Trump's decision to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops in Los Angeles, without consulting the California governor or LA mayor, has sparked controversy. Hundreds of these troops were seen patrolling the streets on Sunday, tasked with protecting federal buildings. ‌ This move comes after two days of protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. As part of Trump's stringent border policy, ICE has been instructed to locate, detain and deport as many illegal immigrants as possible. These raids triggered initial protests on Friday, which escalated over the weekend. By Sunday afternoon, protesters had gathered around the military outside the Metropolitan Detention Centre in downtown LA. This is where several immigrants were detained before being transferred to detention facilities. ‌ Graffiti laden with expletives has appeared on walls and floors, including statements such as: "F*** ICE." The Los Angeles police soon intervened, dispersing the crowd and creating a barrier between the National Guard and protesters. California Governor Gavin Newsom has criticised the president's actions, labelling them as those of a "dictator, not a president". He has formally requested that the Trump administration withdraw the National Guard. However, The White House insists the military will remain until peace is restored, with an additional five hundred marines reportedly on standby. Despite initially not seeking assistance from the National Guard, the escalating chaos has led him to reconsider his initial judgement.

More info Lewis Capaldi fans are rejoicing after rumours have began to circulate that the West Lothian crooner could make a return to Glastonbury Festival. The news comes two years after the talented musician struggled to perform in front of thousands of adoring supporters at the iconic music event. The Scot is believed to be taking the 'Secret Set' slot on the Friday night of Glastonbury. The Forget Me chanter is believed to be taking to the Pyramid Stage at the iconic music event after Alanis Morrisette, reports the Daily Mail. It comes after the 28-year-old was forced to apologise to fans throughout his 2023 Glastonbury set as he battled with flailing vocals and a fading voice. Capaldi looked visibly frustrated throughout the performance as he made an emotional admission to the crowd. It later came to light that Lewis had experienced an attack of Tourette's Syndrome on stage. The Bruises hitmaker had previously taken time off in the lead-up to the festival to focus on his mental health and told fans on stage he would likely be taking another extended break following the performance, the Daily Record reports. Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sentstraight to your messages. "Look I'm really sorry before we go any further, because this is a pain in the a***," he said. "You've all come out and I'm apologising that my voice is f***ing packing in. Glastonbury I'm really sorry, I'm a bit annoyed with myself here. "I recently took three weeks off, just because I've been non-stop since the start of the year and wanted a break for my head and my mental health. I wanted to come back and do Glastonbury because it's so incredible and I just want to thank you all for coming out. "I was scared but you really made me feel at ease. I'm really sorry, I hope they will let me back on even though it's been a sh**show. "I feel like I'll be taking another break over the next few weeks so you probably won't see me for the rest of the year. But when I do come back and I do see you I hope you're up for watching." In a touching show of unity and support, the crowd sang Lewis' hit Someone You Loved back to him, nearly moving him to tears. Music-lovers also buoyed him up by chanting "Oh Lewis Capaldi". Lewis vanished from the spotlight to adjust to the impact of his Tourette's, saying that it "became obvious" during his Glastonbury set "that he needed to spend much more time getting his mental and physical health in order". "I [need to do this] so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come," he added at the time. "Playing for you every night is all I've ever dreamed of, so this has been the most difficult decision of my life. "I'll be back as soon as I possibly can." Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder that often causes sudden unwanted and uncontrolled rapid and repeated movements or vocal sounds called tics, at times making it difficult for people to speak. Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox Fans were given an insight into Lewis' diagnosis in his acclaimed Netflix documentary, How I'm Feeling Now, which was released shortly before his Glasto appearance. In May, the Glasgow-born musician made a shock appearance at Edinburgh's Assembly Rooms. He graced the stage as part of Tom Walker's headlining gig, in a low-key appearance which took everyone by surprise. And back in March, singer Yungblud excitedly talked up Capaldi's pending return to music, remarking: "I have heard his new music and it sounds great. He is getting his mental health right. I love him. We've been on this ride together." Lewis Capaldi's management and Glastonbury Festival have been contacted for comment.
