
Cosmologists intrigued by signs the universe might stop expanding
Right now it is expanding, at an accelerating rate. If nothing changes, many billions or trillions of years from now the universe would presumably become cold, dark and inhospitable.
But new data posted online Wednesday by scientists with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey suggest this process of cosmic acceleration — attributed to a mysterious energy field dubbed 'dark energy' — has been weakening over the past 4 billion to 5 billion years.
Dark energy may not be a 'cosmological constant,' as generally assumed, but rather may evolve over time, according to the DESI scientists. If this idea of 'evolving dark energy' holds up under further investigation, it would put many different cosmic futures in play.
Perhaps the universe will settle down into a serene maturity, never in a rush, imperturbable.
Or perhaps the acceleration will pick up again, as if someone turned a knob somewhere.
Or perhaps everything will go into reverse, and the whole business will contract again. That would be the ultimate turnaround — a cosmic 180.
'This result brings to the table, again, the possibility that the universe may not continue to expand forever. One of the possibilities now is that, in some theories, the universe could stop expanding, and re-contract into a Big Crunch,' said Mustapha Ishak, a cosmologist at the University of Texas at Dallas and co-chair of the working group that analyzed the data.
'We can't foretell what dark energy will do in the future,' added Willem Elbers, a cosmologist at England's Durham University and a co-chair of the working group.
Dark energy is the primary driver of cosmic evolution, but if that mysterious energy field decays, matter and gravity could become the dominant factors, he said.
'In that case, the ultimate fate hinges on a knife's edge. Depending on how space is curved, a collapse is possible,' he added in an email.
For planning purposes, it is important to recognize that the timescale here is many billions or trillions of years. The DESI observations may be cosmically consequential but do not rise to the level of an action item for us mortals.
As observational data pours in, theoretical cosmologists have some work to do. There continues to be uncertainty about the Hubble Constant, the rate of the universe's expansion, and whether there's something glitchy in the estimates or, more profoundly, something wrong with the standard model for the evolution of the cosmos. Different estimates of the expansion rate have led to a decade-long debate dubbed the Hubble Tension.
New telescopes are coming online to try to discern what the universe is telling us about its past and future. NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is under construction at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and is on track for launch in two years.
Later this year, the Vera C. Rubin Telescope in Chile, funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy, is scheduled to begin observations. NASA's SPHEREx space telescope, a relatively modest observatory, launched March 11. It will survey 450 million galaxies, testing theories that the embryonic universe underwent a period of exponential acceleration known as 'cosmic inflation.'
DESI, funded by the Department of Energy's Office of Science and managed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is an international collaboration involving 900 researchers and 70 institutions worldwide. The experiment uses a telescope at Kitt Peak in Arizona to map the history of the universe. Its dataset includes 13.1 million galaxies and 1.6 million quasars, which are very bright, distant objects powered by supermassive black holes.
So there's a lot of data coming in, and the universe clearly hasn't run out of ways to surprise cosmologists.
'I think the universe is giving us a lesson in cosmic humility. It doesn't seem to be following the manual we had,' Adam Riess, a cosmologist at Johns Hopkins University who shared the Nobel Prize in physics for discovering the accelerated expansion of the universe, said in an email. Riess is not part of the team that published the new data.
'When a similar but slightly weaker version of this DESI result first appeared last year, many were not sure if this clue would sustain another year's scrutiny and tripling of the data, but it has!' he said. 'If confirmed, it literally says dark energy is not what most everyone thought, a static source of energy, but perhaps something even more exotic.'
If the DESI news sounds vaguely familiar, it is because last April the same team announced a similar result. The difference is the quantity of the data — more than twice as many galaxies studied — and the confidence in the result.
The team is still not claiming a 'discovery,' but the probability that the results will hold up with further study is increasing. Although the new data has been posted online, it has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal.
'We are still at the 'interesting' or 'stay tuned' level. Very intriguing but not yet definitive,' cosmologist Wendy Freedman of the University of Chicago, who is not part of the DESI team, said in an email.
On Tuesday, another team of scientists, the Atacama Cosmology Telescope collaboration, posted online the results of observations of the most ancient light in the universe — the cosmic microwave background radiation. In a news release, the team described the data as 'the clearest and most precise images yet of the universe's infancy.' The radiation was emitted 380,000 years after the Big Bang, when the expanding universe first became transparent to light.
Jo Dunkley, a Princeton astrophysicist, said in an email that the new data supports the standard model in cosmology, called Lambda Cold Dark Matter. It does not rule out the possibility of evolving dark energy as suggested by the DESI results so far, she said.
'I think that until we figure out what dark energy is, almost anything is in play — i.e. the dark energy could change its behavior in the future in a way that leads to a Big Crunch, even though that's not what the simpler models would suggest,' she said.

They typically cause a bright fireball and a strong sonic boom—and may break the odd window—but they do not usually cause much destruction. Back in February, a 174 to 220 feet asteroid—"2024 YR4"—was estimated to have a 3.1 percent chance of impacting the Earth in 2032, which was "the highest impact probability NASA has ever recorded for an object of this size or larger." A space rock this big could level a whole city upon impact with Earth. However, refined projections suggest that impact with Earth is very unlikely, and some scientists now believe that 2024 YR4 might be on its course to impact the moon in December 2032 instead. "Asteroid 2024 YR4 is now too far away to observe with either space or ground-based telescopes. NASA expects to make further observations when the asteroid's orbit around the Sun brings it back into the vicinity of Earth in 2028," NASA said. Additional data from the NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), shows that the probability of the asteroid impacting the Moon has increased slightly, from 3.8 percent to 4.3 percent. However, CNEOS also notes that even in the unlikely event that it does make an impact, this would not alter the Moon's orbit. Scientists from South Korea's Pusan National University recently studied another huge near-Earth asteroid—Bennu. This 1,640 feet wide space rock is predicted to have a one-in-2,700 chance of colliding with the Earth in the September of 2182. While an impact is very unlikely, the consequences of such could be catastrophic. The shock waves generated by the impact of the collision would cause earthquakes, wildfires and thermal radiation. It would also leave a large crater and eject debris upward. Atmospheric chemistry and global photosynthesis would be disrupted for between three to four years, as a result of the 100–400 million tons of dust that would be injected into the atmosphere due to the impact. The average surface temperature would decrease by around 7 degrees Fahrenheit, the average rainfall would fall by 15 percent, and the ozone layer would deplete by 32 percent. NEW YORK -- Six planets are hanging out in the sky this month in what's known as a planetary parade. Catch the spectacle while you can because it's the last one of the year. These linkups happen when several planets appear to line up in the night sky at once. Such parades are fairly common, happening around every year depending on the number of planets. At least one bright planet can be spotted on most nights, weather permitting, according to NASA. Six planets were visible in January skies and every planet of our solar system was visible in February, but not all could be spotted with the naked eye. Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and a faint Mercury are visible this month without any special equipment, and the best chances to spot them are over the next week. Uranus and Neptune can only be glimpsed through binoculars and telescopes. Jupiter and Venus made a close brush earlier this week and are still near each other in the eastern sky, 'close together like cat's eyes,' said Carolyn Sumners at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Mercury will be at its farthest point from the sun on Tuesday morning, making it easier to spot before it disappears into the sun's glare. To catch the planets, go out in the morning shortly before sunrise and look east. Try to find Jupiter and Venus clustered together first. Saturn is off to the side and Mercury will be close to the horizon, trying to rise before the sun. 'You're looking for little tiny pinpoints of light, but they are the brightest ones,' said Justin Bartel with the Science Museum of Virginia. 'They don't really twinkle like the stars do.' Before heading out, make sure it is a clear, cloudless morning and try to get away from tall buildings that could block the view. Mercury will hide behind the sun again toward the end of the month, but a crescent moon will then join the parade. How Trump's commercial spaceflight executive order could benefit SpaceX, Elon Musk
SpaceX is not mentioned by name in the executive order, but stands to gain the most due to its many lucrative government contracts and ambitious launch cadence. SpaceX and Elon Musk just notched a significant win with President Donald Trump's latest executive order. Trump on Wednesday, Aug. 13, signed an executive order that eases many federal regulatory restrictions on commercial spaceflight companies in the U.S. Though SpaceX is not mentioned by name in the order, the commercial spaceflight company perhaps stands to gain the most from the move because it holds many lucrative government contracts and maintains the most active launch cadence in the U.S. The order also comes more than two months since Trump and Musk had a very public feud over a spending bill that led to a falling-out between the once-close allies – and threats that could have hampered U.S. spaceflight ambitions. Here's everything to know about Trump's commercial spaceflight executive order, as well as SpaceX's long battle with government regulators. Trump signs executive order on commercial rocket launches Trump's order directs the U.S. transportation secretary to eliminate or expedite environmental reviews for launch appovals administered by the Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses commercial rocket launches. The declaration further calls on the secretary to do away with "outdated, redundant or overly restrictive rules for launch and re-entry vehicles," the White House said in a statement provided to Reuters. Trump's order states that it is imperative to increase commercial rocket launches in the U.S. to "ensure that new space-based industries, space exploration capabilities, and cutting-edge defense systems are pioneered in America rather than by our adversaries." Order could ease environmental regulations for SpaceX missions The executive order would directly benefit private spaceflight companies like Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, both of which conduct the bulk of their operations in Texas. SpaceX, which Musk founded in 2002, likely stands to gain the most from the relaxed regulatory environment. The commercial rocket launch company leads the way in U.S. spaceflight missions by routinely conducting Starlink satellite deployments using its Falcon 9 rocket from both California and Florida. SpaceX's Falcon 9, one of the world's most active rockets, is also the vehicle of choice for NASA when the space agency sends astronauts to the International Space Station. What's more, the SpaceX Crew Dragon Capsule perched atop the rocket is the only U.S. vehicle capable of transporting astronauts to the orbital laboratory. SpaceX additionally benefits from billions of dollars in contracts from not only NASA, but the Department of Defense by providing launch services for classified satellites and other payloads. Trump's order comes as SpaceX prepares to launch its massive 400-foot Starship rocket again in August from its Starbase headquarters in South Texas. Musk has also oft-stated his commitment to increasing the cadence of test missions for the spacecraft after receiving key regulatory approval. The launch vehicle, regarded as the world's largest and most powerful rocket, is set to serve a pivotal role in future U.S. spaceflight. Starship is the centerpiece of Musk's vision of sending the first humans to Mars, and is also critical in NASA's plans to return astronauts to the moon's surface. Elon Musk, SpaceX have battled regulations for years Trump's executive order is undoubtedly a huge win for Musk, who has spent years pushing back on federal regulations he views as "superfluous." In September 2024, the FAA announced a proposal to hit SpaceX with $633,009 in civil penalties for what the agency claims were failures by the company to follow license requirements ahead of two separate launches last year. In response, Musk took to his social media site X to indicate his plans to sue the agency for "regulatory overreach." The FAA has previously said in a statement to USA TODAY that it seeks to balance spaceflight progress with the need to ensure commercial launches are safely conducted. A record 148 FAA-licensed commercial space operations took place in 2024, up by more than 30% from the year prior, the agency has noted. But when it comes to Starship's development, SpaceX has become known for its risk-tolerant philosophy. Musk has stressed that rapid and frequent testing that sometimes leads to explosive ends can still provide data that helps engineers improve the vehicle's design. Environmental groups, others long oppose SpaceX rocket launches That aggressive approach, though, has rankled environmentalists and others who have criticized SpaceX's operations for potentially decimating regional ecosystems. The South Texas Environmental Justice Network, which has long opposed Musk and his space program, most recently issued a statement in May condemning the FAA for approving SpaceX's request to increase its Starship flight tests to 25 a year. In late June, Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum threatened to sue SpaceX if investigators determined that Musk's spaceflight company had contributed to undue pollution and marine life die-off in the country. The announcement came after the fiery mishap earlier in the month caused debris to fall in the Mexican state of Tamaulipa.
