Ireland 100% believe they can beat France

Yahoo21-03-2025
Forward Fiona Tuite says Ireland can "100%" defeat France in their Women's Six Nations opener in Belfast on Saturday.
France have finished second to all-conquering England in the last five Six Nations and missed out on last year's title after a final game defeat by the Red Roses.
Ireland, who finished third last year, last defeated the French in 2017 championship.
"We 100% believe we can win this game," said Ulster second row Tuite.
"We'll focus on ourselves and we'll take a lot from it, it's not all about the result.
"We're really focused on this being a journey and on ourselves. If the result comes, then absolutely, it's class. But do we think we can punch? Absolutely."
The 28-year-old has been named amongst the replacements alongside Cliodhna Moloney and squad captain Eden McMahon with head coach Scott Bemand opting for a 6:2 split on his bench.
Under Bemand, Ireland have qualified for this summer's World Cup and recorded famous victories over Australia and New Zealand last autumn.
Tuite said the step up in "physicality and aggression" were the main differences in playing the best teams in the world, and that is where Ireland would look to take a further step.
"We're not the biggest team but we're definitely aggressive. I think Hugh [Hogan, defence coach] calls us a middleweight team, where we have to punch hard and low.
"That's something we have been focusing on, that Irish physical dominance is something we wanted to bring into the game. .
"We're really looking forward to bringing that against the French."
Tuite added France are a "tough team" and said Ireland had been building in training, becoming more "intense and competitive" as the weeks have progressed.
"They are fast, strong and quick. We've worked really hard but we will just focus on the game that we can bring, and we're looking forward to the challenge.
"We're looking forward to see how we go in the Six Nations and then on to the World Cup."

Wimbledon 2025 live updates: Day 6 results and reactions as Sinner, Djokovic and Shelton all advance

Follow live reaction from The Championships as some the sport's biggest stars, including Sinner, Djokovic and Shelton, advanced in style Getty Images The stars were out on day six of the 2025 Wimbledon Championship and they all reached the second week in style. No. 1 Jannik Sinner made light work of his match against Spain's Pedro Martinez with a straight sets win. Mirra Andreeva (7) also won her match in straight sets against USA's Hailey Baptiste. Emma Navarro (10) outlasted 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejčíková and Iga Świątek (8) eased past Danielle Collins in straight sets. To conclude the day's play, Novak Djokovic (6) and American Ben Shelton (10) powered past their respective opponents in straight sets as they were loudly supported by Wimbledon's faithful. Get involved: live@ Miomir Kecmanovic and Novak Djokovic take Centre Court to close out day six at Wimbledon. Shelton 1-0* Fucsovics Away we go as Ben Shelton faces Márton Fucsovics. The American starts with the serve and quickly takes the first game. This match has been pushed back a while but Ben Shelton and Márton Fucsovics are finally taking the grass. Both players played briefly yesterday after their matches on Thursday were postponed due to darkness. You might be surprised when you hear what one of Iga Świątek's favorite meals is... Barbora Krejčíková was not feeling her best today but still put forth a gutsy effort on the grass. The crowd repaid her with a standing ovation as she left the court. Getty Images FINAL: Świątek 6-2, 6-3 Collins No. 8 Iga Świątek won 61 of 103 points, beating Danielle Collins in straight sets to advance the fourth round. She will face No. 23 Clara Tauson next, who eliminated No. 11 Elena Rybakina in straight sets earlier today. Getty Images FINAL: Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, 3-6 Navarro Navarro has triple match point but Krejčíková pulls out a beautiful backhand, ripping it down the line. However, on the next point, Krejčíková fires a return shot into the net and that will do it. Gutsy effort from last year's champion but ultimately Navarro prevailed to advance. Getty Images Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, 3-5* Navarro This is a tough scene... After Krejčíková drops the point, she takes a moment to herself near the back wall and appears to be in tears, clearly not feeling her best. The crowd gives her a cheer of support. Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, 3-4* Navarro Another game, another break. Krejčíková is persevering but she does not look like herself. She gets a double fault and then moment later, she pushes a backhand wide to drop the point. Critical game coming up here. Getty Images Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, *3-3 Navarro Whatever is plaguing Krejčíková is visible yet she somehow mustered the ability to break Navarro to even this deciding set 3-3. She looks a step slower and her shot is not as powerful but she continues to battle. FINAL: Dimitrov 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7) Ofner Grigor Dimitrov is through to the fourth round where he will face the No. 1 seeded Jannik Sinner. Dimitrov recorded 15 aces in his win today, which was his 100th Grand Slam win. Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, 2-3* Navarro Another break, this time for Navarro. Holding double break point, she blasts a backhand down the line that gave Krejčíková no chance of returning the shot. After the game, Krejčíková was examined by the medical staff after feeling faint. Moments later, she grabs her racket and returns to the court. Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, *2-2 Navarro After having her serve broken, Krejčíková returns the favor. Navarro attempts to play a dropshot just over the net but unfortunately for her, the shot just does not have enough power. This match could come down to the wire. FINAL: Alexandrova 6-3, 7-6 (7) Sönmez Impressive showing by Ekaterina Alexandrova to advance past Zeynep Sönmez in straight sets, though the second one required a tiebreak. She excelled returning serve, winning 33 receiving points and going 4-6 on break points. Barbora Krejčíková has just missed five break points on the Emma Navarro serve to open up a 2-0 lead at the start of the third and final set. Instead Navarrro holds and the defending champion is now 3/14 on break points. It gets worse for Krejčíková as she's broken to love in the next game, and having been a set and a break up is now on the brink of elimination. Getty Images Świątek 6-2, 0-0* Collins In 39 minutes, Iga Świątek has taken the opening set against Danielle Collins. Everything has gone the former world No. 1's way as Collins ended up slipping and landing on the ground a couple of times in that set. Some 13 unforced errors from the American show where she can improve heading into the second set. She has gone off court for a short break. Krejčíková 6-2, 3-6, *1-1 Navarro Krejčíková had triple break point in the second game of the third set but Navarro pulled it all the way back. Krejčíková got two more break points after that and still couldn't take the point as an unforced error leads to her dropping the point. Big stand for the American. This match appears to hang on Świątek's first-serve percentage. She has made just over 50 percent, but is winning over 85 percent of the points when she does. Świątek 5-2 Collins No holding back from Collins, who's hit six winners and 13 unforced errors in the first six games. She's had her chances but Świątek has come up with some big serves at key moments - fending off two break points to hold for 5-1.

Birmingham sign ex-Celtic forward Furuhashi

Birmingham City have continued their busy summer recruitment by landing ex-Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi from French top-flight side Rennes for an undisclosed fee. The Japan international has agreed a three-year deal with Blues, who were promoted back to the Championship after a record-breaking season as League One champions. Advertisement He scored 85 goals in 165 appearances for the Bhoys and was the Scottish Premiership's leading scorer in the 2022-23 season with 27 goals. Furuhashi joined Rennes in January for £10m but is back in Britain just six months later with Chris Davies' newly-promoted side, despite being heavily linked with a return to Celtic. He won four Scottish Premiership titles during four years with the Glasgow club from 2021-25 and has also lifted two Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups. Furuhashi joins compatriot Tomoki Iwota at Blues, who have signed Nigeria full-back Bright Osayi-Samuel and Jamaica winger Demarai Gray in the past week as well as Wolves midfielder Tommy Doyle and Euro Under-21 winning goalkeeper James Beadle on loan.

Doué and Dembélé score for PSG in 2-0 quarterfinal win over Bayern Munich at Club World Cup

ATLANTA -- ATLANTA (AP) — Désiré Doué scored in the 78th minute, and Paris Saint-Germain moved a step closer to another trophy with a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup on Saturday, a game marred by a gruesome injury to young German star Jamal Musiala. With PSG two men down after a pair of late red cards and Bayern throwing everyone forward, Ousmane Dembélé added an insurance goal deep into stoppage time to send the French powerhouse on to the semifinals Wednesday against either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund at East Rutherford, New Jersey. Dembélé, whose goal was set up by Achraf Hakimi's brilliant dribbling through five Bayern defenders, celebrated by sitting with his legs crossed to honor Liverpool player Diogo Jota, who was killed along with his brother in a car wreck early Thursday. A moment of silence was held before the opening kick. PSG, which claimed its first Champions League title with a 5-0 rout of Inter Milan five weeks ago, broke a scoreless deadlock when João Neves stole the ball from Harry Kane near the halfway line to send the French team sprinting toward the Bayern goal. Neves got the ball back off a give-and-go and found Doué lurking just outside the top of the area. His left-footed shot caught Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer flat-footed as it skidded inside the right post. But PSG had to hold on for dear life to preserve the win after Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernández were both sent off with red cards. Pacho was called for a reckless challenge and Hernandez earned red for doling out an elbow. Bayern had two apparent goals flagged for offside, including a header by Kane. In the waning seconds, the German club was awarded a penalty kick, only to have it waved off after a video review. Musiala's sickening injury marred the outcome. As he chased a loose ball near the end line in first-half stoppage time, PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma darted off his spot and dived for it — only to crash into the left ankle of the 22-year-old German. As Musiala rolled over, his foot dangled awkwardly, the ankle appearing to be cleanly broken. Donnarumma walked away with the ball, but kneeled down in horror when he looked back and realized the seriousness of the injury. A stretcher was immediately summoned to take Musiala off the field. Both teams walked toward the locker rooms in stunned silence, with the PSG keeper appearing to be close to tears. He was booed throughout the second half by Bayern fans each time he touched the ball. The last of six matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium drew a crowd of 66,937, nearly filling the retractable-roof facility. It was the largest turnout in Atlanta, one of 11 U.S. cities that will host games at next year's World Cup. The city drew an average of 43,044 — about 60% of capacity — for its Club World Cup matches. 'We do what we have to do to take the victory. We are really happy. We know Bayern is one of the teams that plays similarly to us. They are a strong team. It was a really good effort today, a really good game.' — Hakimi. 'I have a feeling that the injury is something very unfortunate for Jamal and the entire team. ... We all saw what happened and it didn't look good.' — Bayern coach Vincent Kompany.
