The commission observed that it remains non-operational even nine years after its inauguration. Commission chairman A A Rasheed instructed authorities concerned to submit an urgent report on the matter.
The building, constructed at a cost of Rs 30 crore and spanning 66,000 sq ft, was inaugurated by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on May 24, 2017. Despite being fully equipped across three floors, the reason for the non-commencement of operations remains unknown, the commission said. The commission took a serious note of this issue and decided to seek a report from the authorities. The commission found that there should have been a respite for the heavy rush of patients to the hospital if the block was made operational.
The commission has directed the health secretary, district collector, director of medical education, medical college principal and SAT Hospital superintendent to submit a report on the issue by July 5.

LS attention drawn towards rising cancer cases across India

New Delhi, July 30 (UNI) The issue of cancer and the plight of patients suffering from the disease was raised in the Lok Sabha today with members urging the government to take steps to enhance public awareness about the growing health threat. They also demanded an increase in the Ayushman Bharat health scheme's coverage amount from Rs 5 lakh to at least Rs 25 lakh. Ujjwal Raman Singh of the Congress party brought up the matter during Zero Hour, highlighting the rapid rise in cancer cases and the growing number of affected patients. He said that changes in diet and lifestyle have made cancer a serious threat, with the number of patients afflicted by this deadly disease continuously increasing. He called upon the government to launch special awareness programs and take necessary measures to support cancer patients. Singh also warned that cancer is fast becoming a pandemic and could soon take the form of a tsunami. Citing a World Health Organization (WHO) report, he said that cases of many types of cancer are on the rise, including among children. He expressed concern that by 2050, cancer could claim the lives of 85 percent of those diagnosed. India is witnessing a large number of fatalities due to this complex illness, and there is an urgent need to increase awareness among the public. He also called for government assistance to institutions such as the Cancer Institute in Lucknow and the Kamala Nehru Cancer Institute in Prayagraj. According to the Government report, in India, around 100 out of every 1 lakh people are diagnosed with cancer. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) notes that the estimated number of incidences of cancer cases was more than 14 lakhs in 2023 in India. Regarding the Ayushman Bharat scheme, Singh noted that medical assistance of up to Rs 5 lakh is provided to the poor. Given the increasing burden of cancer cases, he argued that this amount is insufficient and must be raised to Rs 25 lakh. He emphasized that since the scheme aims to benefit the poor, its coverage should be enhanced specifically for treating life-threatening diseases like cancer, to ensure every economically weaker patient can avail the benefits. Railways rationalises fares, enhances medical facilities to improve passenger services: Ashwini Vaishnaw

The Indian Railways is moving towards a more efficient, safe, and socially inclusive system, Union Minister for Railways, IT, and Information & Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said in the Lok Sabha, in response to questions raised by Eluru MP P. Mahesh Kumar, on Wednesday. Highlighting recent fare adjustments, the Minister explained that, after a five-year gap, the Railways has implemented minimal rationalisation of ticket charges from July 1, 2025. The average increase across sleeper, 3AC, 2AC, and general classes ranges between 0.5 to 2 paisa per kilometre. No fare hike was made for journeys under 500 km in the general class, and suburban fares and Monthly Season Tickets (MST) remain unchanged. The Minister noted that Indian Railways continues to offer significant subsidies—Rs.60,466 crore in FY 2023–24, amounting to nearly 45% of total passenger service costs. Concessions remain for persons with disabilities, patients, and students. The additional revenue generated is being directed towards service improvement, including safety, punctuality, and station redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Services like Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat trains, along with digital platforms such as Rail Madad and UTS Mobile App, are being expanded for better commuter access. Responding to a separate question from the same MP regarding emergency medical services, the Minister informed that medical boxes equipped with life-saving equipment and oxygen are now available at stations and onboard trains, following Supreme Court directives and AIIMS recommendations. Frontline railway staff, including ticket examiners and station masters, are receiving regular first-aid training, and emergency contact details of nearby medical facilities are displayed at stations. Ambulance services are being coordinated with state governments and private providers to ensure prompt medical response. These efforts, the Minister said, reaffirm Indian Railways' commitment to passenger welfare and safety.
