England's new mixed disability squad to take on India in T20 series
England's newly formed mixed disability cricket squad is ready to take on India in the first international T20 series this month.
Player Brendon Parr expressed confidence in the team, made up of players from the learning disability, physical disability, and deaf squads.
The players have been practising at Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club (BSCC), which has been praised as "amazing" by England Cricket Board CEO Richard Gould.
Mr Parr said: "This format is new for all of us; we've been selected from three separate squads and we've all had to learn and adjust our game to take into account different impairments.
"The new format is a trial and this will be our first major tournament."
Mr Parr praised the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for its support and efforts to create more opportunities in disability cricket.
The Devon cricketer's own journey in the sport was interrupted after a road accident left him in a wheelchair.
He eventually returned to cricket, trialled for disability cricket, and in 2024 was named the Lord's Taverners Disability Cricketer of the Year.
He said: "It was a long recovery, but gradually I got back involved, starting at a lower level and playing at a higher division as my body healed and I got stronger."
Both the England and India squads will use BSCC for pre-competition training and warm-up matches.
The new home for BSCC will host the India team from Monday, June 16 to Friday, June 20.
The series will kick off on Saturday, June 21 when India plays the England Men's Mixed Disability team at Taunton.
In January, Mr Parr played for the England Physical Disability squad, which reached the final of the Physical Disability Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka.
He said of the opposition: "They are a tough team to beat, but we are in good form."
Mr Parr, who will be warming up close to home at BSCC, said: "Everyone is very excited.
"To be able to come to Budleigh before the series, with its two pitches and great facilities, new nets, and lovely set-up is a real bonus."

Sophia Dunkley insists England are '100 per cent' behind skipper Heather Knight despite seeing Australia end their Ashes hopes with a resounding 57-run defeat in the first T20 international. Trailing 6-0 in the series as they walked out at the Sydney Cricket Ground after losing each of the three ODIs, Knight's side were well beaten with four overs to spare to hand the hosts an unassailable lead with two more T20s and a Test match to come. A poor start Down Under had prompted question marks over Knight's reign as captain and, with only pride now left to play for, the criticism has intensified. However, asked about Knight's leadership afterwards, Dunkley said: 'Look, I think we just back Heather 100 per cent to lead us out there. She's done the job amazingly for the last… I don't know how long it is but it's been for a long time. 'She's a massive part of our changing room, a massive leader and I back her 100 per cent to help turn this team around. 'All we can do is stick together now and fight as hard as we can for the last three games and absolutely back her 100 per cent as our captain. I'm sure she can bring the best out of us in the last couple of games, for sure.' Having won the toss and opting to put Australia in, Knight saw any initiative snatched away from her as wayward bowling and poor fielding allowed the hosts to get off to a flying start which was aided in no small part by a 51-ball 75 from Beth Mooney. Her innings provided the backbone of a total of 198 for seven to leave the tourists needing to match their record successful chase of 199 to keep the series alive. Dunkley's 59 from just 24 balls, which included four sixes and six fours, briefly gave England hope as they reached the halfway stage on 96 for three, but Knight's departure for 18 stalled the momentum and they ultimately fell well short. Knight told TNT Sports: 'We probably gave them 20, 30 too many runs, I thought. If we'd kept them to 20, 30 less with a little bit more in the field, I think we would have been in with a real shout. 'Sophia Dunkley gave us a chance, the way she batted – it's such a brilliant wicket as well, it felt like it was on – but just a little bit of mis-execution and if we'd kept to them 20, 30 less, we would have been in the game for sure.' However, stand-in Australia skipper Tahlia McGrath had a warning for England. Asked what her team had to work on, McGrath said: 'England came really hard at us in the power play and we probably leaked a few too many there, so that's definitely an area to work on, and then just continuing to boss it in the field and really put on a good performance there.' Meanwhile, there was better news at the men's Physical Disability Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka, where England will meet India in Tuesday's final. Callum Flynn's side finished second in the group stage with four wins from six matches but will need to avenge a 29-run loss to their fellow finalists to secure the first international silverware of the year.

Bellmead, TX (FOX 44) — Many athletes helped build La Vega's storied history across many sports – but for the Parr family, competing for State Championships is just Parr for the course! The road to Jerry World is never an easy one… 'I'm doing what I'm supposed to do, just keeping it going on and on,' La Vega High School quarterback Kourtney Parr, Jr. said. 'I hope when I leave, somebody does the same.' For Kourtney Jr., his cousin did the same for him – just on the court. 'I'm so proud of the kid being a sophomore, taking your team to state,' Kiyleyah's mom Shayla Reese said. 'Like, that is a big accomplishment.' In March of 2024, Kiyleyah Parr led the La Vega Pirates to back-to-back 4A State Championships in girls basketball, becoming Two Time State MVP and winning two straight 4A Player of the Year awards. 'Being a State Champion as a junior, it kind of made her want it for her senior year, also,' Reese said. 'So, she was like telling her sisters, like, 'Y'all got to come out, we got to win this again.' And her sisters had her back. So, it was just written in stone.' Being a leader of a team isn't always easy, especially when not everyone believes in the journey. 'I think that was like her driving force that made her want to hush the people up, pretty much like, I know what I'm capable of and y'all are going to see,' said Reese. K.P. made her mark in La Vega history before going on to play Division One basketball at Wichita State University, where she's getting lot of playing time as a freshman. 'The coach there called her daily,' Reese said. 'He always was interested in anything that she had going on. He actually came to our senior night. He was just always interested in what was going on with her.' But when one Parr left, another Parr stepped up, now carrying K.P.'s State Title legacy on the football field. 'He's a great player, he's very passionate about football,' Kourtney Jr.'s dad, Kourtney Parr, Sr. said. 'He loves the sport. He's been playing since he was three years old. So, I'm proud to see his accomplishments so far.' Kourtney Parr Jr. or K.J., is the sophomore starting quarterback for the La Vega Pirates – who advanced to the State Title game for the first time since 2019. 'He's just a kid who's hungry for being a champion,' Kourtney Sr. said. 'His hard work is paying off. I'm pretty proud of him.' K.J. now prepares to play in the 4A Division two State Title game against Carthage, continuing to build the La Vega legacy in the Parr household with each completion that he throws. 'I'm so excited!,' Reese said. 'I think I'm going to the game Friday because I just am so excited for him.' Just two teams remain but only one team will win.
