Michael Sumler, who spent years working with the venerable soul-funk group Kool & The Gang as both an onstage hype man and a behind-the-scenes stylist, died Sunday in a car crash in Georgia. He was 71.
His death was confirmed by a spokesman for the band. 11Alive, a TV station in Atlanta, reported that Sumler was killed after his car collided with another vehicle as he was travelling on Veterans Memorial Highway in Georgia's Cobb County. Sumler, who was known as Chicago Mike, had performed Sunday evening in Mableton, Georgia, with the group Con Funk Shun, whose Michael Cooper paid tribute to Sumler on social media.
"We had no idea that Sunday night's Love's Train would be your last ride," Cooper wrote. "Rest in heavenly piece."
In its statement, Kool & The Gang described Sumler as "our longtime wardrobe valet" and said he worked with the band from 2000 to 2015, "making sure the guys looked their best on stage every night." Sumler "also hyped the crowd with his energy and dance moves at the top of the show," the group added.
Known for hits including Ladies Night, Jungle Boogie, Get Down On It and Celebration , Kool & The Gang was formed in the mid-1960s in Jersey City, New Jersey, by brothers Robert Bell (who went by Kool) and Ronald Khalis Bell along with several neighbourhood pals. Last year the group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which called Kool & The Gang "the most sampled group in hip-hop history."
Information on Sumler's survivors wasn't immediately available. – Los Angeles Times/Tribune News Service

Malique surprises fans by posting rare photo of himself on Instagram

The post quickly became a talking point among Malaysian netizens, many of whom were thrilled to see a rare glimpse of the elusive artist. Malique surprised fans by posting what seems to be his first Instagram photo of himself; a 17-year-old picture with his wife, Melissa. MALAYSIAN hip hop icon Malique stunned fans after sharing what appears to be the first-ever photo of himself on his Instagram account, even though the image is 17 years old. The post quickly became a talking point among Malaysian netizens, many of whom were thrilled to see a rare glimpse of the elusive artist. Instagram user @meorhaqimy commented, 'Even though it is an old photo, this could be the first time Malique has posted one showing his face.' Another user, @ said, 'It will not be long now, one day he will definitely post a current photo of himself.' Meanwhile, @azraeimuhamad sarcastically joked, 'Probably, this means in 2040 we will only get to see his 2025 photo.' The 47-year-old, whose real name is Malik Ibrahim, was born on Aug 21, 1977, at Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru, Johor and is best known as one half of the legendary duo Too Phat alongside Joe Flizzow. Malique, best known as one half of Too Phat with Joe Flizzow, has stayed out of the public eye since the group disbanded in 2007. Photo: Facebook Since the group disbanded in 2007, Malique has largely kept out of the public eye, avoiding print and electronic media entirely. For years, his Instagram feed featured only random images and pictures of other people, but never his own face. That changed four days ago, when he surprised his followers by posting a picture from Aug 8, 2008, the day he married TV personality Melissa Maureen Rizal in a private ceremony in Bali, Indonesia. The couple now have four children: Inca Medina Malique, Rumi Arjuna Malique, Chasca Maya Malique and Ezra Aditya Malique. Melissa, born on March 3, 1980, is a former actress and model of Pakistani, Chinese and Malay heritage. She is best known for her work in local TV series, films, commercials and stage plays, including Realiti and Gol & Gincu. For fans who have long regarded Malique as a pioneer and icon of the Malaysian hip hop scene, the post was more than just a nostalgic throwback. It was a rare moment of connection with an artist who has chosen to remain in the shadows for nearly two decades. More Like This

Influencer regrets 'immature behaviour' in viral anthem video

In the clip, Choo Haoren was seen playfully filming his Steady Gang members, Ahya and Tomato. Photos: Facebook Malaysian singer and YouTuber Choo Haoren has apologised for playfully filming his friends during the national anthem at a public event. However, Umno Youth Chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh has called for severe action, labelling those involved as "traitors and fools." Choo issued a public apology after a video of him recording his friends during the national anthem, Negaraku , at the 8TV Cuckoo Starfluencer Awards 2025 went viral, drawing widespread criticism. In the clip, Choo was seen playfully filming his Steady Gang members, Ahya and Tomato. At one point, he paused to ask a teammate to sing along. Many viewers condemned the act as disrespectful to the anthem. Addressing the backlash in a statement posted on Aug 10, Choo admitted his behaviour was wrong. He acknowledged that the act was inappropriate for the occasion and that he should have sung the anthem with solemnity. 'I deeply regret the discomfort that my immature behavior caused the public. I know the national anthem is not only a symbol of the country but also carries solemn historical significance and evokes emotional identification among all citizens. 'I promise that I will behave better and appropriately in all formal and public occasions in the future. I sincerely thank the public for their warning and understanding. 'Once again, I offer my sincerest apologies to all my friends who care about me for the inconvenience this incident has caused,' he said. Umno Youth Chief calls for tougher action The apology, however, has not quelled calls for action. Dr Akmal condemned the behaviour and urged for harsher penalties. 'Before this, the Malaysian flag was flown upside down. Now, the national anthem Negaraku is being mocked! They did it first, then only apologised afterwards!' he wrote on social media. Dr Akmal stressed that the matter was not about race or political affiliation, but about respecting the country. 'We are calling for harsh punishment for traitors like this! And to those foolish enough to defend such actions, go ahead, defend this one too! "Let us see what excuse you will come up with. Maybe you will say this person has no brain, just like you!' He further urged that all those involved be punished regardless of their race or any political party backing them. – Sinar Daily
