Ben Shelton takes down Francis Tiafoe in DC Open quarter-finals
Shelton and Tiafoe are no strangers to one another. They played doubles together a few days ago and have now met four times in ATP Tour events.
"We know tennis is a long journey. We're going to play each other a bunch of times. Especially, we've already played on the hard courts, we've already played twice at the US Open, and he beat me the most recent time. It's tough not to cheer for a guy like that,' Shelton said.
The first set stayed on serve until the 11th game, when Tiafoe broke Shelton to love. The former Florida Gator bounced back immediately, breaking Tiafoe and forcing a tie-break. Shelton used his power forehand to claim the first set, delivering a 144 mph serve in the process.
Shelton broke first in the second set at 3-3, and it was cruise control from there. The win puts Shelton ahead, 3-1, in the Head2Head series. Shelton already secured the No. 7 spot on the rankings by making the quarter-finals, but every win gets him closer and closer to No. 6 Novak Djokovic, who many consider to be the greatest of all time. It's a 600-point gap to close, but winning this tournament would cut that number in half.
Winning the Washington 500 seems very doable with top-seeded Taylor Fritz falling in the quarters against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Shelton is now the highest-seeded player remaining in the tournament. Still, he will have to get by Davidovich Fokina before facing the winner of the 7-seed Alex de Minaur vs. lucky loser Corentin Moutet.
De Minaur and Moutet are scheduled to begin not before 7 p.m. ET, and Shelton vs. Davidovich Fokina will follow — so drink some coffee. Fans can watch the match on the Tennis Channel using cable or streaming, and the TennisTV app is also an option (subscription required).

UNC basketball adds another piece to roster from transfer portal
North Carolina gets a key big man for the 2025-26 season The North Carolina Tar Heels basketball program used the transfer portal to re-tool their roster for the upcoming season. With some key additions to the roster from the portal as well as the 2025 recruiting class which was ranked in the top 10. But they weren't done adding, and on Thursday, they received another commitment. North Carolina landed High Point transfer Ivan Matlekovic out of the transfer portal as he became the 10th new player to join the Tar Heels roster. Matlekovic is a native of Croatia, played sparingly for High Point last seaso,n appearing in just five games as a freshman. He averaged 2.6 points and 1.8 rebounds per game, averaging 6.2 minutes an outing. The 6-foot-11 center will provide some more depth for the Tar Heels in the frontcourt. They also added former Arizona center Henri Veesaar this offseason and will welcome back James Brown for another year. Michigan State football guard Luka Vincic explains why he transferred to MSU
Michigan State football has seen a nice influx of talent from Oregon State follow their former head coach Jonathan Smith over from Corvallis, and that was the case this past offseason, yet again, when former Beaver offensive guard Luka Vincic committed to transfer to the Spartans. Now, Vincic is fighting for a starting spot in training camp. On Thursday, Vincic was able to speak to the media after practice, and he was asked an interesting question. Vincic was asked why he decided to transfer, and if he had Michigan State in mind when he made his decision. He gave an insightful answer: I just felt like... That's a good question. I personally felt like I wanted to be pushed a little bit more. We had a lot of change at Oregon State and the conference and the coaching staff. Nothing against them, they have a great coaching staff... Nothing against them, I was just hoping to be pushed a little bit more, and I knew that when I entered the portal, I was hoping Michigan State would give me a ring, and thankfully they did, and now I'm getting to play for Coach M again and I feel like I'm getting pushed and I'm getting a lot better.
