From generic drugs to vaccines, Indian pharma industry is transforming lives worldwide

India Gazette18-05-2025

New Delhi [India], May 18 (ANI): India has transformed itself into a global health leader in terms of affordability, innovation, and inclusivity over the past decade.
India's pharmaceutical industry is a global giant ranking third in volume and 14th in value.
It's the largest supplier of generic medicines providing 20 per cent of the world's supply and a key player in affordable vaccines.
In 2023-24, the sector's turnover hit Rs 4,17,345 crore growing steadily at over 10 per cent annually for the past five years.
For the common people, this means more medicines at lower prices, better healthcare and jobs in factories and labs across the country. From small towns to big cities, India's pharma growth is creating opportunities and saving lives.
The government claims that its schemes are the backbone of this success.
The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) runs 15,479 Jan Aushadhi Kendras, offering generic medicines at prices up to 80 per cent lower than branded ones.
A heart medicine that once cost Rs 500 might now cost Rs 100. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Pharmaceuticals with Rs 15,000 crore, supports 55 projects to make high-end drugs like cancer and diabetes medicines right here in India.
Another PLI scheme with Rs 6,940 crore focuses on raw materials like Penicillin G, reducing our need for imports.
The PLI for Medical Devices backed by Rs 3,420 crore is boosting production of tools like MRI machines and heart implants.
Then there's the Promotion of Bulk Drug Parks scheme with Rs 3,000 crore building mega hubs in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh to make medicines cheaper and faster.
The Strengthening of Pharmaceuticals Industry (SPI) Scheme with Rs 500 crore, funds research and upgrades labs, helping Indian companies compete globally.
'These efforts mean medicines are made in India, for India and for the world keeping costs low and quality high,' the government said in a statement.
India's pharma sector supplies 55-60 per cent of UNICEF's vaccines, meeting 99 per cent of WHO's DPT (Diphtheria, Whooping cough and Tetanus) vaccine demand, 52 per cent for BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin is a vaccine primarily used against TB), and 45 per cent for measles. From Africa to America, Indian vaccines save millions.
At home, these schemes create jobs for young Indians, from factory workers to scientists. Foreign investors are pouring in with Rs 12,822 crore in 2023-24 alone, because they see India's potential.
India welcomes 100 per cent foreign investment in medical devices and greenfield pharma projects, making India a hotspot for global companies.
India's pharmaceutical sector is more than an industry; it's a lifeline. With schemes like PMBJP, PLI, and Bulk Drug Parks, the Modi government is ensuring no one is left behind when it comes to healthcare.
From affordable medicines at Jan Aushadhi Kendras to vaccines reaching the world, India is building a healthier, self-reliant future. (ANI)

Rs 5,000 as aid to those caring for differently abled likely soon in Delhi

A financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to caretakers and attendants of people suffering from over 80% or above disability is likely to be provided soon by the Delhi government in a first-of-its-kind initiative, officials have said. 'This is going to be the first such scheme in the Capital where the caretakers will also receive financial assistance from the government…,' Delhi Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh said. 'A proposal has been prepared in this regard, and it was already discussed in the Cabinet meeting once… Some changes are being made. Once it is ready, the proposal will be presented before the Cabinet again for approval and further implementation,' he added. The Capital, the Minister said, has 1,000 such families with people having 80% or above disability, and who are completely dependent on their family members and others. For an accurate figure, however, the department is also planning to conduct a survey so that only those eligible can avail the benefits under the proposed scheme. 'This is a first-of-its-kind proposal not only in Delhi but across the country,' a senior official said. The Social Welfare Department's existing pension scheme provides persons with over 40% disability a monthly aid of Rs 2,500. As per official data, about 1.5 lakh specially-abled people are availing this pension scheme. However, no assistance is provided to their caregivers. 'The aim behind this scheme is to ensure that there is no negligence in the care of such persons with disabilities, especially those from economically weaker sections. Also, the attendants receive some financial support… because well-to-do families have separate nurses or caretakers to take care of such persons…But the case is different in poor families, so this scheme will help them financially,' the senior official added. Officials said the caretakers can be parents, siblings, or anyone who is taking care of the differently abled. Meanwhile, on Friday, the Social Welfare Minister also inspected the under-construction building for mentally challenged individuals in Narela on Friday. Once completed, individuals currently residing in overcrowded shelter homes like Asha Kiran Home in Rohini will be relocated here. The building, located within the Nursing College Hostel premises and the Primary Urban Health Centre campus in Narela, will accommodate 220 differently abled residents. This facility is expected to be operational within three months. The Minister directed the officials to ensure the building is wheelchair-friendly and there is no encroachment around the premises, so that ambulance movement does not face any obstruction. Indraj also said that multiple facilities are being developed across the city for differently abled people. Once the facilities in Mamurpur and Dallupura are completed, they will significantly improve access to services, safety, and healthcare for the differently abled, he added.

HC grants conditional release of documents for PG medical students

Jaipur: Rajasthan High Court Friday provided relief to MBBS graduates pursuing post-graduate studies and directed SMS Medical College and other medical institutions to return their original documents in a case regarding post-PG senior residency internship. The court stipulated that petitioners must provide an undertaking to the state govt, agreeing to pay Rs 10 lakhs if they do not complete their senior residency. While hearing over two hundred petitions, including one by Dr Syed Shabaz and others, Justice Sameer Jain dismissed the state govt's review petition on grounds that the matter is already being heard by a division bench. "We have maintained that govt wants them to serve in govt hospital for 2 years after completing post-graduation," stated Archit Bohra, additional govt counsel. Petitioners explained that during PG course admission, applicant are required to sign a Rs 10 lakh bond, promising to serve the state govt for two years post-course, or pay the bond amount of Rs 10 lakh. Petitioners, however, challenged the govt's decision. TNN Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !
