Taniela Tupou starts as Wallabies change four for final Test

RTÉ News31-07-2025
Taniela Tupou will play his first game for the Wallabies in 2025, among four changes to Australia's side for Saturday's final Test against the British and Irish Lions in Sydney.
The tighthead prop, who had been deemed surplus to requirements by Joe Schmidt for the opening three Wallabies games of the year, has been put straight into the starting side for this final Lions Test.
Tupou, who is set to join Racing 92 in Paris later this year, replaces Allan Ala'alatoa at tighthead, after the Brumbies prop suffered a shoulder injury last Saturday.
Interestingly, there is no place for Carlo Tizzano in the matchday squad. The flanker, who came on as a replacement in each of the last two games, was at the centre of last Saturday's controversial ending, when Australia wanted a penalty for Jac Morgan's clearout on him in the build-up to Hugo Keenan's winning try.
Rob Valetini misses out at flanker, having departed at half time on his return from a calf injury a week ago, and his place at blindside is taken by Tom Hooper.
Nic Whits comes in for Jake Gordon at scrum-half, and will make his 73rd and final appearance for the Wallabies, having confirmed he would retire from Test rugby earlier today.
Dylan Pietsch replaces the injured Harry Potter on the left wing with the Wiradjuri man set to play for the first time in the special edition Wallabies jersey he designed for this year's Lions Series.
Schmidt has also reverted back to a 5:3 split on his bench, as Andrew Kellaway joins Tate McDermott and Ben Donaldson as the backline subs.
Australia: Tom Wright; Max Jorgensen, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, Len Ikitau, Dylan Pietsch; Tom Lynagh, Nic White; James Slipper, David Porecki, Taniela Tupou; Nick Frost, Will Skelton; Tom Hooper, Fraser McReight, Harry Wilson (capt).

Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz dating rumours addressed ahead of US Open

Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz are set to make their debut as a doubles team in Flushing Meadows on Tuesday. The pair, both former US Open singles champions, have teamed up for the revamped mixed doubles tournament, where they'll face Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper in the first round. When Raducanu and Alcaraz added their names to the provisional entry list a few months back, it sparked massive speculation about their personal lives. During Wimbledon, Raducanu was even quizzed about the truth behind the dating rumours - questions she later labelled as "terrible". The British star's former coach, Mark Petchey, who began assisting her on an occasional basis earlier this year but has since stepped back to concentrate on his commentating role, has now addressed the rumours himself, putting the gossip to rest. Ahead of Raducanu and Alcaraz's opening match in Flushing Meadows, the British tennis coach and pundit told OLGB: "They are just good friends. She's good friends with a lot of people out there on the tour. The media is going to be the media. "Obviously, I know there's suggestions that they are going out. That's not the case. They're just good friends. The reality is they're only there to play tennis.", reports the Express. The former US Open champions will be fully focused on giving their all in their opening match against Pegula and Draper, and Petchey is excited to follow their progress. He added: 'It's exciting for us as fans and I think it's actually very exciting for the players that are involved in it as well. 'Emma and Carlos are excited to play and all the players that I spoke to at Montreal and Cincinnati are all excited to play. They're all thrilled with the opportunity. I think they're all pretty jacked to go and show how much it means to them to try and win this event but also to go and put on a great show for tennis. 'I'm a big fan of the event, I'm a big fan of what they've tried to create, and there may be a bit of tweaking here and there as we go forward. 'The thing about tennis is if you don't try it, you'll never know, and you can go back if it doesn't work. But I think it's going to be a massive success.' Alcaraz had a quick turnaround after the Cincinnati Open, where he lifted the trophy when Jannik Sinner was forced to retire with an illness just 23 minutes into their final on Monday. But the world No. 2 made it clear that he wanted to get on the court with Raducanu and bring his best tennis, even though he flew in less than 24 hours ago. 'I think it's going to be new for me, which I love. I'm going to have so much fun playing there, playing with Emma. It's going to be tough against Draper and Pegula, but I will try to enjoy as much as I can,' he said on Monday night. 'I will try to see how it's going to be, the court, the balls, everything. I will treat that as a really important and good preparation for me. So I will try to be at my best tomorrow after the trip to New York and probably going to sleep late but I will try to put my best tennis just to help Emma to get the win and let's see if we will get it but I think it's going to be fun and great to have those matches.'

Brian O'Driscoll's verdict on Johnny Sexton missing the Women's Rugby World Cup

Brian O'Driscoll insists it was the right move for Johnny Sexton not to link up with Ireland for the Women's Rugby World Cup. In April, Sexton agreed to come on board with the IRFU in a full-time coaching capacity from August 1 in an expanded role that would involve working with the national men's and women's teams up to senior level. The Dubliner was part of Andy Farrell's British and Irish Lions backroom team for the successful Australia tour and it has been questioned why the former Leinster and Ireland great won't be in England with Scott Bemand's staff to pass on his expertise at the finals. Ireland will get their bid underway in their first group stage game against Japan at Franklin's Gardens in Northampton on Sunday. "I think he's probably still finding his feet and trying to work out where he can add value," said Sexton's ex-colleague O'Driscoll. Brian O'Driscoll and Lynne Cantwell have teamed up to celebrate Defender as Principal Partner for the Women's Rugby World Cup 2025 "And the thing about him is his relationship with the coaching staff that we've seen. And so that is a huge component of his integration. "Listen, if he doesn't have a relationship with Scott, you can't force that. You need that trust level. You do, and you can't have that thrust upon them. That dynamic is all important." Bemand has said that ex-Ulster and Exeter No.10 Gareth Steenson will continue to take on the kicking coach duties for the finals, as Ireland chase a semi-final berth for the first time since 2013. O'Driscoll added: "Johnny knows he's got a lot to learn from a coaching point of view, but I'm sure he's taken a huge amount on board from his experience over the last couple of months with the Lions and that he'll be better for it. "And also he's finding out what type of coach he is going to be. I think he's probably got an idea, but it's about relationships, about connection, and that doesn't happen just overnight. "I think it's probably easier with players that he knows rather than coming into the unknown." Liverpool APPROVE British record Alexander Isak transfer with Marc Guehi also wanted in £165m double-deal

LIVERPOOL have sanctioned a British record £130million move for Alexander Isak next week – confident that Newcastle will finally let the wantaway striker leave. And they also still want to land Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi for £35m. 6 Liverpool will sanction a £130m British record bid for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak Credit: PA 6 Arne Slot wants to continue his massive spending spree despite splashing out on another striker, Hugo Ekitike Credit: PA 6 The Reds are also set to fork over £35m to land Marc Guehi Credit: Getty The arrivals of both would take boss Arne Slot's summer spend to a sensational £466m following the captures of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni, Will Wright and Armen Pecsi. Liverpool have already had one bid of £110m turned down for Swede Isak but will not make any official approach until after Monday's clash with Eddie Howe's Newcastle side. The atmosphere at St James' Park will already be hostile enough and the Reds do not want to inflame the situation any further. But they make their second move big for the striker who was frozen out of Toon by Howe for Saturday's 0-0 season opener at Villa Park. READ MORE SPORT STORIES EZE DOES IT Tottenham reach £60million agreement to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace During that game the Toon Army chanted: 'There's only one greedy b*****d', to make their feelings known about a striker who has downed tools, refused to play and is to be fined for missing the Villa game. Their hero worship for the front man who has scored 62 goals in three seasons since signing from Real Sociedad for £63m has disintegrated into bitterness and spite. Isak will not only be left out again by Howe but, as things stand, he will not even attend the Liverpool clash. With Guehi - who appeared to snub Oliver Glasner after Sunday's draw at Chelsea - ongoing negotiations with Palace are understood to be amicable because Eagles chairman Steve Parish and Kop CEO of football Michael Edwards have a solid relationship. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS There is increasing anxiety at Anfield over the stance of centre-back Ibrahima Konate who is refusing a new deal with only this season left on his current contract. He is keen to join former team mate Trent Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid and Liverpool would consider selling this window or in January rather than let him leave for free next summer. 'That bothers me' - Jamie Carragher tells Liverpool NOT to sign £150million Alexander Isak from Newcastle Guehi, aged 25 like Konate, is seen as the ideal solution while the signings of him and Isak would create a world-record spend across any transfer window by any club - that mark currently held by Chelsea who forked out £391m in 2023. Slot told the Anfield hierarchy well before the end of last season that he saw Isak as central to the mega-spending masterplan of restructuring the squad that went on to claim the Premier League. That has not changed despite the arrival of £69m striker Hugo Ekitike from Frankfurt and him scoring in both the Community Shield and Prem opening-day win over Bournemouth. With sales expected to have topped £230m by the end of the transfer window, it is understood a decision has now been made to try to end that Isak saga by paying an extra £20m. A likely total price of £130m would also allow Newcastle to double their money on the 25 year old and save face on the sale they have grown to accept is becoming inevitable. Harvey Elliott, a £40m target for West Ham, could come into the equation in a part-exchange deal, depending on what choice the attacking midfielder makes. Howe made it clear after the Villa game that he wants the stand-off with Isak resolved as he continues his pursuit of Brentford's Yoane Wissa. 6 6 Newcastle are still desperate to land Brentford star Yoane Wissa to replace Isak Credit: Getty He stressed: 'We would like a resolution. I am talking about myself, I am sure the ownership, and the players. 'We need that clarity. You don't need any distraction. But I am not in control of that. I think only one person really (Isak) can control that.' SunSport understands that long-held discussions with Isak's representatives have ensured that personal terms will not be a problem. Newcastle have so far been reluctant to engage with Liverpool amidst attempts to first bring in replacements having lost out to Manchester United for Benjamin Sesko and, ironically, Liverpool for Ekitike. The Bees have now upped their valuation of Wissa from £40m to £60m but the DR Congo attacker – also left out at the weekend – is digging in for a move to the North East having removed all association with the club from his Instagram account. But Wissa is almost certain to get his wish - and a deal could even be struck before the weekend. 6 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW
