Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Announces 40 Semi-Finalist Teams Driving Grassroots Innovation across India
Semi-finalists will receive mentorship, prototyping support and access to innovation platforms to further develop their ideas

Samsung India, the nation's largest consumer electronics brand, today announced the national shortlist of 40 semi-finalist teams for the fourth edition of its nationwide innovation contest for the youth, Samsung Solve for Tomorrow. These teams will now progress to the next phase of the competition, where they will receive mentorship, prototyping support and access to innovation platforms to further develop their ideas for societal impact.
This year's semi-finalists represent remarkable geographical diversity, with participants from 15 Indian states, including remote regions such as Cachar (Assam), Baghpat (Uttar Pradesh), Mahabubnagar (Telangana), Durg (Chattisgarh) and Sundargarh (Odisha). The programme continues to champion young changemakers from across the country, enabling them to address real-world challenges through the power of technology and innovation.
The 2025 edition of Solve for Tomorrow invited entries under four key themes:
The shortlisted ideas reflect the evolving priorities of Indian society—ranging from AI-led tools for air quality monitoring, biodiversity conservation, and clean water access, to smart solutions for food waste and e-waste management. Other innovations include gamified learning for students from underserved communities, personalised coaching apps, and sports-led interventions for children with autism. In the health and research domains, projects span early lung cancer detection and mental wellness tools to simplifying technical research through intelligent data scraping.

What Lies Ahead for the Semi-Finalists?
As part of their journey in Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2025, the top 40 teams will participate in an intensive Innovation Bootcamp, designed to help them turn their ideas into viable prototypes. During this phase, participants will meet and engage with leaders and experts across Samsung R&D and Southwest Asia operations. They will also attend curated training sessions led by industry and government experts at IIT Delhi, gaining hands-on insights into innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship. The bootcamp includes structured prototyping support from IIT Delhi mentors and alumni of previous Samsung Solve for Tomorrow editions, ensuring continuity of learning and mentorship. Following the bootcamp, a National Pitch Event will be held where a select Samsung Jury will evaluate and shortlist the final 20 teams who will move forward in the competition.
A Global Vision for Youth Empowerment
Launched in the United States in 2010, Solve for Tomorrow is now active in 68 countries and has engaged over 3 million young people worldwide. The initiative aligns with Samsung Electronics' global CSR vision – 'Together for Tomorrow! Enabling People" – aimed at equipping young people with the education, skills and opportunities to become future-ready leaders.

Dealer fined for selling defective cellphone
Dharwad: The Dharwad District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission has rapped a cellphone manufactuing company for selling a defective handset to a customer. Neeta, a resident of Karwar Road in Hubballi, had purchased a Samsung cellphone for Rs 20,300 from the authorised Samsung dealer Sri Tirumala Tele World, Hubballi. Within 2-3 days of purchase, the gadget started developing problems such as hanging and display issues. Neeta told the dealer about the issue and sought a replacement. However, the dealer refused, even though the customer had not used it further, and had kept it with her in the same condition. With no other option left, Neeta sent a legal notice. But even then, the dealer allegedly ignored her grievance. Stating that such conduct amounted to deficiency in service under the Consumer Protection Act, Neeta filed a case before the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission. After a detailed inquiry, the commission headed by retired judge Ishappa Bhute and member Vishalakshi Bolashetti observed that documentary evidence clearly showed the phone had developed hanging and display defects within 2-3 days of purchase, which amounted to a manufacturing defect. Considering all these aspects, the commission directed the company to repair the complainant's cellphone within one month of the order, failing which, it has to refund Rs 20,300 with 8% interest to the complainant. Additionally, the company should pay Rs 25,000 as compensation for inconvenience and mental agony, and pay Rs 10,000 towards litigation costs, the commission ordered. Govt should give power subsidy only to Vidarbha, Marathwada: FIA
Nagpur: The Federations of Industries Associations (FIA), an umbrella organization of industrial bodies across Vidarbha, has demanded that state govt should withdraw the power subsidy scheme for rest of Maharashtra, and once again extend the benefit exclusively to industrial units in Vidarbha and Marathwada. This will restore the scheme to its original form. The scheme was introduced in 2016 when it was available exclusively for industries in the two regions. Later, it was discontinued for two years during the MVA regime, and then restarted in 2022, with all the D-Plus talukas in the state covered, said FIA's past president Kiran Paturkar. FIA has demanded that this has thinly spread the subsidy amount. As against Rs1,100 crore received by Vidarbha earlier, now only Rs500 crore is paid, claims the association. The association has demanded that instead of D-Plus talukas across the state, the power subsidy should be extended to all talukas irrespective of the classification in Vidarbha and Marathwada. The talukas are classified from A to D on the basis of development. The whole idea of providing the subsidy was to boost industries in backward regions like Vidarbha and Marathwada. If the incentive is also available in richer regions like West Maharashtra why would an industrial unit be attracted to a region like Vidarbha, said Paresh Raja, president of FIA. The FIA will be taking up the issue with the state govt soon, he said. Raja said the state's ease of doing business policy at present focuses mainly on the large industries. There need to be steps for MSMEs too. Paturkar said even the land allotment mechanism for small and mid-sized industries needs changes, as applicants often face hassles in the online portal. BOX State forms panel on tariffs The state govt has formed a committee to review the impact of US tariff hike and suggest measure to increase exports. It would specially study the impact on state's economy and come up with mid and long term solutions. The committee would also take up a review of aspects like de-criminalisation, self-certification of low risk non-hazardous, non-polluting industries, and ease of doing business. A government resolution (GR) issued in this regard says that the tariff hike would hamper the competitiveness of the Indian industry. As much as 18% of India's exports are to the US, which comes to 2.2% of the GDP. The 14-member committee will work on measures like exploring new markets, region-specific incentives and come up with a flexible approach against the protectionist stance of the US govt, says the GR. The committee will headed by Apurva Chandra, former IAS officer and principal advisor to ministry of defence. The industries will be represented by Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), CII, FICCI, FIEO as well as other bodies like Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce (DICC), and Engineering Export Promotion Council of India (EEPC).
