Three new working women's hostels in Vizag soon

1 2 Visakhapatnam: The GVMC is planning to soon launch construction work on three working women's hostels in Vizag. GVMC officials recently conducted site inspections at the proposed hostel locations in Mudasarlova and Madhurawada. Land is currently being acquired for the construction of the third hostel in the Gajuwaka area. The Andhra Pradesh govt had earlier granted administrative sanction for these hostels. The hostel at Mudasarlova, adjacent to the BRTS road, will be built on two acres, while the facility at Madhurawada will come up on approximately 1.1 acre. The Greater Visakhapatnam Smart City Corporation Limited (GVSCCL), a special purpose vehicle established to implement the Vizag smart city project, will oversee the development under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. Under this model, ownership of the hostels will remain with the state government, while a private entity will manage operations and maintenance. With an approved capital outlay of Rs 172 crore, the proposal was submitted under the Union govt's special assistance to states for capital investment scheme for 2024-25 and has received formal approval. Given the limited availability of government-run hostels for working women in Visakhapatnam, these new facilities are expected to address significant public demand. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Recent growth in Visakhapatnam's IT, pharmaceutical and service sectors has led to increased employment opportunities, potentially attracting a larger workforce as well as students seeking higher education or professional training. In this context, the hostels will serve as essential infrastructure for women relocating to the city for work or study. Officials said that the initiative will promote gender-inclusive urban infrastructure and enhance female labour force participation. The key objective of these proposed hostels is to provide safe, secure, and affordable accommodation for working women and those preparing to enter the workforce. Experts assert that such facilities are vital for boosting women's economic participation. GVMC commissioner Ketan Garg said that the Union govt has allocated funds for the construction of three working women's hostels in Visakhapatnam. "Land acquisition is currently underway for building these hostels in Madhurawada, Mudasarlova, and Autonagar in Gajuwaka. Construction will be undertaken under the supervision of the GVSCCL. As part of this initiative, site inspections have been conducted in Pineapple Colony near Mudasarlova, and near Kommadi Junction in Madhurawada," the commissioner said. According to officials, the hostels will be equipped with modern amenities, ample parking, food courts, and spaces for recreational and cultural activities. By offering well-furnished, secure accommodation, these facilities are expected to support women's mobility, independence, and access to employment opportunities. The Union govt's initiative to fund the construction of working women's hostels aims to ensure the availability of safe, strategically located accommodation for working women and those pursuing higher education or vocational training in areas with strong employment potential.
