Two from search group that uncovered Mexico's 'ranch of horror' killed
MEXICO CITY - Gunmen on a motorcycle shot and killed two members of a civil search organization that discovered a now-infamous site known as Mexico's "ranch of horror," the group and authorities said on Thursday.
The two victims, Carmen Morales and her son Jaime Ramirez, died after they were shot by two men on Wednesday night, the Jalisco state prosecutor's office said in a statement. The suspects have not been identified.
Morales and Ramirez were members of the citizen search group Guerreros Buscadores, in the western state of Jalisco, which was instrumental in the discovery of what local media dubbed the "ranch of horror" in March.
Searchers found hundreds of items of clothing and skeletal remains at the site in Teuchitlan, a rural area outside Guadalajara, the state capital. Officials have said the site was a cartel training camp.
"Unfortunately, (Morales) had already been threatened several times. ... It's sad and painful that these things are happening. All we families want is to find our loved ones," said Raul Servin, a representative for the group.
The Jalisco state prosecutor's office, however, ruled out a connection to the search group in its statement.
Morales and Ramirez had been searching for a relative who disappeared in February 2024.
Their deaths follow the killing of another member of the search group. Teresa Gonzalez, who had been searching for her missing brother, was killed earlier this month, according to the group.
Members of search groups for missing family members often receive threats, which rights groups allege largely come from the criminal groups responsible for their disappearances.
Jalisco is one of the states with the highest number of reported missing persons, according to official data. It is the home base of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which authorities have accused of forcibly recruiting young people.
More than 124,000 people are missing in Mexico, according to government data. Most cases are never solved, breeding a deep mistrust of authorities among those searching for the missing. REUTERS

US issues sanctions against charities supporting Hamas, PFLP

The US Treasury said it will continue to seek disruptions to the financial capabilities of Hamas. PHOTO: REUTERS WASHINGTON - The United States imposed sanctions on June 10 targeting individuals and sham charities that it said were prominent financial supporters of the Palestinian groups Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The individuals and groups targeted were funding Hamas' military wing under the pretense of doing humanitarian work, in Gaza and internationally, the Treasury Department said. The Treasury said it will continue to seek disruptions to the financial capabilities of Hamas, which still holds hostages it seized in the group's Oct 7, 2023, attack on Israel. The entities sanctioned included the Gaza-based Al Weam Charitable Society, the Turkey-based Filistin Vakfi, the El Baraka Association for Charitable and Humanitarian Work, which is based in Algeria, the Netherlands-based Israa Charitable Foundation and the Associazione Benefica La Cupola d'Oro, based in Italy, the department said in a statement. The five individuals targeted on June 10 were leaders associated with the groups, it said. "Today's action underscores the importance of safeguarding the charitable sector from abuse by terrorists like Hamas and the PFLP, who continue to leverage sham charities as fronts for funding their terrorist and military operations," Deputy Secretary Michael Faulkender said in the statement. Hamas and PFLP have a long histroy of abusing non-profit organisations and charities, the Treasury said. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

REUTERS/Darrin Zammit Lupi/File Photo Two men jailed for life for procuring bomb that killed Malta journalist VALLETTA - Two men were jailed for life by a Maltese judge on Tuesday for having supplied the bomb that killed anti-corruption journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017. Caruana Galizia's murder shocked Malta and caused outrage across Europe, ultimately leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat in 2019. Robert Agius and Jamie Vella were convicted on Friday, with jurors reaching an 8-1 verdict after a trial that lasted more than six weeks concluded that they supplied the explosive material for money. The two defendants pleaded not guilty. Their sentence was delivered on Tuesday, after lawyers' submissions on punishment. Caruana Galizia was killed on October 17, 2017, when a bomb placed under the driver's seat of her car blew up as she was driving away from her home. Another two men, brothers George and Alfred Degiorgio, are serving 40-year jail terms after admitting to having set off the bomb. A third man, Vince Muscat, who also admitted his role in the murder, is serving 15 years after turning state's evidence and testifying against the Degiorgios, and also against Agius and Vella. He described meetings in a coffee shop to plan the murder and how the military-grade bomb was procured, carried in a children's shoe box and placed in Caruana Galizia's car. It was set off by remote control from a yacht. The alleged murder mastermind, one of Malta's leading businessmen, is awaiting trial and a court has banned media references to him so as not to influence potential jurors.
