Anbumani lauds father during protest; Ramadoss sacks 3 MLAs

Time of India20-07-2025
Chennai: Against the backdrop of a leadership struggle in the party, the PMK protest demanding 10.5% quota for vanniyars turned into a show of strength by party president
Anbumani Ramadoss
on Sunday in Villupuram.
Speaking amid PMK cadre who gathered from various districts, Anbumani said that ideally vanniyars should be given 18% reservation proportionate to their population. But the 10.5% quota was non–negotiable, he said.
Party founder S Ramadoss skipped the protest organized by Anbumani and cracked down on Anbumani supporters by announcing that three PMK MLAs who participated in the stir were being suspended from the party.

Nevertheless, Anbumani praised his father Ramadoss during the protest which coincided with the 46th foundation day of Vanniyar Sangam.
Anbumani said the '45 year long protest' by Ramadoss for a separate reservation for vanniyars was longer than the independence struggle undertaken by Gandhi. "Gandhi came to India in 1915 and protested for India's independence until 1947. When compared to that protest, the protest by our ayya (Ramadoss) for a separate reservation for Vanniyars is even longer," Anbumani said.
Anbumani attacked the DMK govt for not providing reservation for vanniyars while using the community to get votes. "As many as 23 of the 133 DMK MLAs and 5 MPs are vanniyars, but the party is refusing to provide reservation for vanniyars. Even vanniyar MLAs in DMK are not demanding separate quota for the community," Anbumani said.
Earlier, Ramadoss hoisted the Vanniyar Sangam flag at his Thailapuram residence marking the foundation day.
Speaking to reporters, Ramadoss said he "wishes success for everyone who protests for the vanniyar cause."
However, after the protest, Ramadoss announced that three party MLAs, S Sadhasivam (Mettur), C Sivakumar (Mailam), and S P Venkateshwaran (Dharmapuri), and party spokesperson K Balu will be suspended from the party for "acting against the interest of the party."

CPM, DMK councillors spar over Madurai's Swachh ranking

MADURAI: DMK and CPM councillors engaged in a heated exchange after the former condemned MP Su Venkatesan's remarks about Madurai city's performance in the Swachh Survekshan ranking. Madurai has been placed last among 40 cities in the 10-lakh population category. M Jeyaram, (ward 58) said, "The union government has deliberately given low ranking for TN cities. We do not accept it, the corporation is performing well, and it is condemnable that the Madurai MP has passed adverse remarks. " He said MP Venkatesan must attend the council meetings to know about the work done by the corporation in solving civic issues. "Instead of talking in public, the MP should speak to the union government and get funds so that all work could be carried out in an expeditious manner," Jeyaram added Responding to this, T Kumaravel (ward 23) elaborated about the funds allocated by MP Venkatesan for the city development. Mayor Indirani intervened and pacified the councillors. She acknowledged that Venkatesan has brought in several development projects for the city.

Crop loan circular withdrawn after AIADMK petition: Edappadi K Palaniswami

TIRUCHY: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami claimed it was after his party submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the state withdrew the circular mandating submission of CIBIL scores to avail crop loans. After submitting the memorandum to Modi, DMK was left with no choice but to withdraw the circular, said Palaniswami, who was on the way to Sivagangai district as part of his campaign. He said during his campaign in the delta districts, farmers had consistently raised the issue. Palaniswami said the state remained unresponsive despite his repeated appeals on behalf of the farmers. 'However, after the petition was submitted to the Prime Minister, the state government quickly issued a circular on July 28, stating the existing procedures for providing crop loans to farmers would continue unchanged. We are glad that the government has finally listened to the farmers' demand,' he said Answering to the question on which all parties are part of the NDA, he said currently both the AIADMK and the BJP are part of the alliance. There are other parties allied with the BJP as well and the full list of allies will be clear when election approaches.

DMK MP questions PM Modi's absence during Operation Sindoor debate in Rajya Sabha

Acknowledging that Modi is a 'global leader' and that the BJP considers him 'a glory to the country and world,' the Tamil Nadu MP pressed for the PM's physical presence in Parliament. 'Where is our prime minister? We want to see him, Sir?' Siva demanded while speaking during the special discussion in the Upper House on 'Operation Sindoor' — India's military response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians. New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) DMK MP Tiruchi Siva launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's absence from Parliament during the debate on Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, questioning the PM's commitment to parliamentary democracy. Siva criticised Modi's track record of parliamentary attendance, noting that the PM was absent during previous crucial debates, including discussions on the Manipur situation. 'Never has he turned up. Never has he respected Parliament,' he said, emphasising that India operates on the principle of parliamentary democracy. Taking a pointed jab at the PM's communication style, Siva said, 'You are talking so much, we hear in Mann Ki Baat, which we don't understand. We see him waving his hands while going and getting down from aircraft, we don't see him in Parliament. Parliament is supreme.' In perhaps his most provocative comment, the DMK leader referenced Modi's past statement about being 'son of the God,' saying he 'humbly accepts' this claim 'for only one reason because he is also invisible. He is not seen at all.' Siva raised serious questions about the security arrangements around the April 22 attack, noting that Modi's scheduled visit to Jammu and Kashmir was cancelled on April 19 due to intelligence inputs, yet tourists were allowed to visit the 'highly sensitive' area where they were subsequently killed. 'Three days ago, PM was not allowed to go there. Whereas 26 innocent people were allowed to visit the highly sensitive place where they were killed,' he said, demanding answers about the security protocols. The MP highlighted that for 40 minutes during the attack, no security personnel arrived at the scene, and pointed out that the responsibility for Jammu and Kashmir's law and order shifted from Srinagar to North Block following the abrogation of Article 370. Defending the Opposition's role in Parliament, Siva argued that disruptions are not mere obstructionism but attempts to 'debate, deliberate and decide.' He emphasised that 'the government is accountable to Parliament' and 'Parliament is answerable to the people.' The DMK leader claimed that despite the government not accepting the Opposition's demand for a special parliamentary session on the terror attack, Opposition parties joined the government delegation abroad 'to express that we are with the nation.' However, he demanded transparency about the delegation's activities: 'whom did the delegation meet, how many countries were visited and how many countries extended support. All these questions are unanswered.' Siva also raised concerns about parliamentary procedures, alleging that treasury bench members are given preference over opposition speakers and that democratic norms are being undermined. He noted that the prime minister has never attended all-party meetings convened before parliamentary sessions, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh representing the government instead.
