DOTr studying busway for España-Quezon Ave. route

GMA Network17-06-2025
The Department of Transportation is studying a possible busway for the España Boulevard to Quezon Avenue route similar to the EDSA model.
In a Saksi report on Tuesday, DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon acknowledged there is a lack of buses, particularly for students, in the approximately 8-kilometer stretch from Manila to Quezon City and vice versa.
He said the DOTr is conducting a feasibility study that is expected to be completed in 2026.
Dizon expressed confidence that up to three operational stations of the Metro Manila Subway Project will be operational by the end of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. 's term.
Three of the five major right-of-way issues have been resolved while the remaining two are under discussion.
DOTr has also accepted three proposals for the planned Integrated Terminal Exchange for Northern Metro Manila which is expected to be finished in 2028. —RF, GMA Integrated News

DOTr pushing for Subway partial ops by 2028

Photo: Japan International Cooperation Agency - Philippines Office (JICA Philippines) The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is doubling down on its efforts to meet President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.'s target to make the Metro Manila Subway Project partially operational by the end of his term in 2028. 'So the subway, the whole line, is 2032, that is our target. But we want to finish at least two to three stations by 2028 and that is starting from Valenzuela, Quirino and hopefully even North,' Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon told reporters at the sidelines of the Post-State of the Nation Address (SONA) forum in San Juan City on Wednesday. Marcos had earlier expressed optimism that at least the first three stations of the Metro Manila Subway Project would be available to service the commuting public come 2028. 'We want to do the partial ops but we are discussing that with the Japanese,' Dizon said. The Metro Manila Subway is envisioned to have a total of 17 stations and a 30.34-hectare depot where the Philippine Railway Institute is located. The project involves the construction of a 33-kilometer railway line that will connect Valenzuela City to Pasay City, with a spur line to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3. The MMSP's 17 stations are: Valenzuela where the depot will be located, Quirino Highway, Tandang Sora, North Avenue, Quezon Avenue, East Avenue, Anonas, Katipunan (Camp Aguinaldo), Ortigas Avenue, Shaw Boulevard, Kalayaan Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Lawton East, Senate-DepEd, NAIA Terminal 3, FTI, and Bicutan. Earlier in the day, Dizon and Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto inspected the Ortigas Station of the subway project, which the Transport chief said is the only remaining major right-of-way issue hounding the project. "Ngayon nagsama-sama kami dito para maghanap ng solusyon [We joined together here to find a solution]. Hopefully, after a few weeks, we will finally start construction," said Dizon. For his part, Sotto said the Pasig City government is also looking forward to the project's eventual completion. 'Nakikita namin umaandar na lahat, at 'yung mga natitirang problema naaayos na,' said Sotto. DOTr calls out MRT-7, Skyway over issues amid floods

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has called out the MRT Line 7 project contractors and the Skyway management over issues that allegedly contribute to the flooding in their concerned areas. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon told Dobol B TV on Tuesday that he and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have been discussing the flooding issue in recent weeks. 'Kahapon, kinausap ko lahat ng kontratista po ng MRT-7 at sinabihan ko sila na kailangan i-clear lahat ng humaharang sa mga drainage dyan po sa Commonwealth Avenue,' he said. (Yesterday, I spoke to all the MRT-7 contractors and told them that they need to clear everything that blocks the drainage along Commonwealth Avenue.) Dizon said the San Miguel Corporation has committed to addressing the concerns in the MRT-7 project. The MMDA earlier said the construction of the MRT-7 Batasan Station on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City could have partially obstructed the flow of rainwater, worsening the flood in the area. The agency said the MRT-7 project 'constructed a manhole directly above the existing drainage pipe culverts.' 'A constructed footing wall of the ongoing MRT-7 construction was also observed, which may have partially obstructed the flow of water,' it added. Meanwhile, addressing the Skyway's downspouts that are not directly connected to drainage, Dizon said he ordered San Miguel Corporation and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to fix the issue. 'Yun naman po sa Skyway, kinausap ko rin po ang San Miguel pero ang sinabi po sa akin na na-turn over po sa DPWH,' Dizon said. (As for the Skyway, I also talked to San Miguel but they told me that it was turned over to the DPWH.) 'Sabi ko po mag-usap ang regional director ng NCR po ng DPWH at ang San Miguel para huwag muna pong magtuturuan at ayusin na lang po muna yung pagbabagsak ng tubig mula sa itaas,' he added. (I told the NCR regional director of the DPWH and San Miguel to talk, stop pointing fingers at each other and to fix the water falling from above.) Six people were reported to have died as a result of Tropical Cyclone Crising, Habagat, and the low pressure area (LPA), the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Tuesday. A total of 1,266,322 persons or 362,465 families were affected by the bad weather in all regions in the country except for Eastern Visayas. Floods, landslides, collapsed structures, and tornadoes were reported in the affected areas. — RF, GMA Integrated News

DepEd, DOTr, UK to build 'Education City' in Taguig

The Department of Education (DepEd), together with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the United Kingdom government, has launched a major infrastructure initiative aimed at making schools more accessible through smart transit planning and climate-resilient development. The project, called the Senate-DepEd (SEED) Transit-Oriented Development Project, aims to ease student commutes while reshaping public education spaces through the creation of Education City—a future-ready, 14-hectare complex to rise in Taguig City. 'This partnership ensures that our learners and educators will also directly benefit from a well-planned, green, and safe environment that ultimately contributes to the public education objectives,' said Education Secretary Sonny Angara. Planned at the junction of two major railway lines—the North-South Commuter Railway and the Metro Manila Subway Project—Education City will host green school buildings, open spaces, a central transport hub, teacher accommodation, and facilities for training and events. The development will also include commercial and residential areas designed to be walkable, connected, and sustainable. By integrating schools within well-connected communities, the SEED Project addresses long-standing barriers to access, especially for students in Metro Manila who face long and unsafe daily commutes. DepEd also expects the project to generate long-term revenues that could help fund new classrooms and support digital education programs nationwide. 'The UK is proud to bring in British expertise and innovation to pioneer a TOD where people can live, learn, work, and thrive — connected by efficient transport systems, designed with people at the heart, and guided by principles of sustainability and resilience,' said British Ambassador to the Philippines Laure Beaufils. A working group will oversee the implementation of the project's second phase, which involves technical studies and the development of a formal proposal to be submitted to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) for approval. Moreover, the initiative is backed by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office through its Green Cities and Infrastructure Programme. It draws inspiration from London's Elizabeth Line and will be developed in collaboration with British experts, including Crossrail International. —LDF, GMA Integrated News
