Shreyas Iyer scripts history for Punjab Kings in IPL, but he will have to pay a heavy fine
IPL 2025
Shreyas Iyer:
Punjab Kings
skipper
Shreyas Iyer
delivered one of the most remarkable knocks in the franchise's history to take them into the
IPL final
after eleven years — but his triumph was also followed by a financial penalty for a slow over rate in the same match.
Iyer stayed unbeaten on 87 off just 41 deliveries, guiding PBKS to a five-wicket win over five-time champions
Mumbai Indians
in the second qualifier at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday. It was a nervy chase of 204, but Iyer's clean hitting and steady leadership ensured Punjab reached the target with an over to spare.
This victory means Punjab Kings have reached only their second IPL final, and their first since 2014. But while celebrations continued, the league handed Iyer a fine for breaching the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences. This was Punjab's second such offence of the season.
Iyer fined INR 24 lakh, team members penalised too
The IPL confirmed that as it was Iyer's second slow over-rate offence this season, he was fined INR 24 lakh. All other members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were fined either INR 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their individual match fees — whichever was the lesser amount.
Live Events
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya was also penalised for his team's slow over rate in the same match. Since it was MI's third offence under the same code, Pandya was fined INR 30 lakh. The rest of his team, including the Impact Player, were fined either INR 12 lakh or 50 per cent of their match fees, whichever was lower.
Punjab stumble early but Iyer anchors the chase
Punjab's chase didn't start smoothly. Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed by Trent Boult for just 6, leaving them at 13/1 in 2.1 overs. Priyansh Arya, though, brought some early momentum with a quick 20 off 10 balls before falling to Ashwani Kumar at 55/2 in 5.1 overs.
Josh Inglis joined Iyer at the crease and added to the scoring with a fluent 38 off 21 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes. But just when Punjab looked in control, Inglis was dismissed by Hardik Pandya, which briefly disrupted their rhythm.
Iyer then found a reliable partner in Nehal Wadhera. The pair stitched together a vital 84-run partnership, keeping the scoreboard moving and the required rate in check. Wadhera fell just short of a fifty, caught for 48 off Ashwani Kumar, but the chase had been stabilised by then.
Shashank Singh was run out for 2, but Iyer remained calm. Punjab crossed 100 in 10.3 overs and 150 in 15.1 overs, with Iyer anchoring the innings all the way.
He finished the match with a towering six in the 19th over, not only sealing Punjab Kings' passage to the final but also reaffirming his reputation as one of the league's most successful captains.
Historic feat for Iyer the captain
This final appearance marks Iyer's third time leading a team to an IPL final — each with a different franchise. He had earlier taken Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020 and won the title with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. He now stands a chance to become a two-time IPL-winning captain, a feat achieved by only a few.
For Punjab Kings, the win ended an eleven-year wait for an IPL final berth, and Iyer's innings will be remembered as the one that brought them back to the big stage — even if it also came with a fine.

The former captain's knock was followed by contributions from Liam Livingstone (25) and Jitesh Sharma (24), helping the team reach 190 runs in 20 overs. PBKS bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Kyle Jamieson took three wickets each. Chasing 191, Shreyas Iyer and co got off to a brisk start. It was a spectacular catch by Phil Salt off Josh Hazlewood's bowling that got rid of Priyansh Arya. Led by Gautam Gambhir, the three-time IPL champions managed to chase down 200 runs against the Punjab Kings, then Kings XI Punjab, in 2014. Manish Pandey led the chase then, slamming 94 runs off 50 balls. 191: KKR vs. Chennai Super Kings (CSK), 2012 final. 179: CSK vs. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), 2018 final. 171: CSK vs. Gujarat Titans (GT), 2023 final. 164: Rajasthan Royals (RR) vs. CSK, 2008 final. The 2025 final target of 191 by PBKS, if successfully chased, would rank as the second-highest chase in IPL final history, surpassing the 191 in 2012. Anushka Sharma steals the spotlight at IPL 2025 final in glittering rhinestone jeans while cheering for Virat Kohli
Anushka Sharma turned heads at the IPL 2025 final in Ahmedabad, supporting Virat Kohli and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. She redefined match-day fashion with a stylish rhinestone denim outfit, pairing Sandro jeans with an oversized white shirt. Her look balanced comfort and cool-girl chic, accessorized with a gold watch and subtle makeup, making her the undisputed fashion winner. When it comes to match-day fashion, no one does it quite like Anushka Sharma. The actress and producer arrived in Ahmedabad on May 3 to cheer on husband Virat Kohli during the IPL 2025 final, and all eyes weren't just on the cricket - they were on her. As Royal Challengers Bengaluru took on Punjab Kings in a nail-biting clash, Anushka brought equal heat off the field with a look that redefined casual glam. Ditching the usual fan jersey and going far beyond a basic tee, Anushka leaned into her signature mix of comfort and cool-girl chic. She showed up in an effortlessly stylish rhinestone denim outfit that perfectly matched the high-voltage energy of the finals. While the world watched to see which team would lift the trophy, Anushka quietly scored a fashion win of her own. Her outfit was anchored in an oversized white cotton shirt, a wardrobe staple she gave a twist to with a casual half-tuck and rolled-up sleeves. It was breezy, unfussy, and ideal for a long night under stadium lights. But the real scene-stealer? Her rhinestone-embellished jeans that shimmered with every step she took. The blue denim was decorated with carefully scattered pearls and rhinestones, catching the light without going overboard. The look was equal parts glam and grounded - just like Anushka herself. The standout jeans, by the French label Sandro, retail at $308 (roughly ₹25,700) - not exactly cheap, but for sparkle and comfort like that, style enthusiasts might just be adding them to cart. Virat Kohli's Playful Side Lights Up Chandigarh Airport with Anushka Sharma Keeping the rest of her look minimal yet polished, Anushka accessorised with a sleek gold wristwatch on one hand and stacked bangles on the other, striking the right balance between sporty and sophisticated. Her glam was refreshingly low-key: nude eyeshadow, fluttery lashes, softly blushed cheeks, and a muted nude lip. Her hair, parted down the centre and styled into soft waves - tied the entire look together in a way that was relaxed yet red-carpet ready. Whether RCB takes the trophy home or not, one thing's for sure, Anushka Sharma is the undisputed winner of IPL 2025 fashion. One step to a healthier you—join Times Health+ Yoga and feel the change
