Malaysia's hospitals ranked among world's best by Newsweek

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has once again earned global recognition, with several of its medical institutions named among the world's best in Newsweek's World's Best Hospitals 2025 list.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad extended his heartfelt congratulations to the top-performing public and private hospitals, saying the recognition was a testament to the dedication and excellence of the country's healthcare professionals.
"Heartiest congratulations to all top public and private hospitals in Malaysia — recognised in the World's Best Hospitals 2025 list by Newsweek.
"Kuala Lumpur Hospital and Putrajaya Hospital have been listed among Malaysia's top-ranked public hospitals, while Sunway Medical Centre, Gleneagles, and Subang Jaya Medical Centre lead the private sector.
"These accolades are a testament to the tireless commitment of our healthcare top management and their relentless teams of frontliners — from doctors to support staff — in delivering people-centred, high-quality, and compassionate care," he said in an X post.
He added that the achievement, inspired by the values of Malaysia Madani may inspire further healthy competition and continuous improvement, across our health ecosystem.
The World's Best Hospitals 2025 list, compiled by Newsweek and global data firm Statista, ranked over 2,400 hospitals across 30 countries based on extensive surveys of medical experts, patient experience data, quality metrics, and PROMs (Patient-Reported Outcome Measures).
The countries included were selected based on comparability factors such as life expectancy, standard of living, population size and data availability.
This year's top hospitals globally include Mayo Clinic in the United States, Toronto General in Canada, and Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden.
Malaysia joins the prestigious list with several institutions recognised for excellence in both public and private healthcare.

Health Ministry: New Covid-19 vaccines now available

PETALING JAYA: A new batch of Covid-19 vaccines is now available, says the Health Ministry. In a post on X, it said the vaccines are available at government health clinics. 'For your information, the vaccines are new and are not from the old stocks.' The ministry posted on June 5 that the vaccines are effective against the latest variants. It added that the mRNA vaccines are from Pfizer Inc. The post has since been reposted by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. Dzulkefly said in a separate post on X that the highly transmissible NB.1.8.1 variant has not been detected yet in Malaysia. This variant, also known as Nimbus, has been identified as the cause of the resurgence of cases in India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom. In Malaysia, the JN.1 is the dominant variant currently making up 17% of the variants detected. This is followed by XEC (7.9%), KP.3 (5.2%), KP.3.1.1 & LB.1 (3.2%) and LF.7 & LP.8.1 (0.65%). Dzulkefly said each country has different dominant variants; for example, the JN.1 in Thailand (63.92%), LF.7 & NB.1.8 (66%) in Singapore and the NB.1.8.1 (XDV subvariant) (12.5%) in China. 'Globally, the top three variants are predominantly LP.8.1 (34%), JN.1 and its related sub-variants (22%) and XEC (16%). 'The World Health Organization (WHO) considers the global risk from JN.1 to be low, but its high transmission rate may cause more cases, especially in winter or where immunity is low,' he said. Dzulkefly advised the public to maintain good personal hygiene, wear face masks when unwell or in crowded environments, and receive vaccinations. Thailand has reported over 28,000 new Covid-19 cases within the span of two days. India has experienced a sudden increase in cases since late May, with the number of active infections now exceeding 5,000.

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Umno Wanita Chief Datuk Noraini Idris wants the Health Minister to address the parking shortage at the Sabah Women and Children's Hospital (HWKKS) in Likas, describing the situation as a matter of human dignity rather than mere convenience. The former senator said she received numerous complaints from pregnant women forced to walk long distances in their condition due to inadequate parking facilities at the hospital. Advertisement 'I cannot imagine how a mother carrying a small child feels or an anxious husband accompanying his wife who is about to give birth, having to circle around looking for parking while the life and health of their loved ones are at stake,' Noraini said in a statement, here, Thursday. 'This is no longer a matter of comfort. This is a matter of dignity, a matter of humanity,' she said. She cited cases where heavily pregnant women have had to park as far away as the Kingfisher commercial area and walk to the hospital in hot weather, rain or even while experiencing labour pains. She noted that the parking issue extends beyond the HWKKS' to nearly all major hospitals in Sabah, including Queen Elizabeth Hospital I and II, Tawau Hospital and Sandakan Hospital. Advertisement Noraini appealed to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad to seriously consider constructing multi-story parking facilities at HWKKS as a long-term solution to the burden faced by many patients and their families. She also called on the Sabah Government to step forward and comprehensively resolve the issue. 'Building multi-storey parking is not just about physical infrastructure. It is a symbol of care and humanity,' she said, adding that Sabah women have been patient for too long and it is time their voices are heard and needs properly addressed. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Dr Zaliha: JWP, agencies committed to implementing Kembara Diraja

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa has directed the Department of Federal Territories (JWP) and all agencies under it to coordinate the implementation of the Kembara Diraja (Royal Tour), as decreed by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia. In a statement on her Facebook page, she said the tour would provide an opportunity for His Majesty to personally engage with the people across the three Federal Territories and distribute zakat aid to those in need. Yesterday, Sultan Ibrahim announced that he would embark on the Kembara Diraja across the Federal Territories to observe the people's living conditions firsthand and distribute zakat to the poor and the eight eligible asnaf groups. His Majesty made the remarks during the 2025 Investiture Ceremony held in conjunction with his official birthday at Istana Negara yesterday. Dr Zaliha said JWP also fully supports His Majesty's emphasis on the need for civil servants to uphold the principle of Loyalty to the King and Country, which aligns with the Harmoni work culture introduced in the Federal Territories as a foundation for good governance. "As a policy-implementing body, JWP personnel will remain committed to enhancing the delivery of public services that are efficient, with integrity and people-oriented, in line with the spirit of Malaysia Madani," she said. – BERNAMA
