Egypt's balanced monetary policy, flexible exchange rate boost resilience: IMF's Clarke
Egypt - Nigel Clarke, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), stated that the Central Bank of Egypt's (CBE) balanced monetary policy and adoption of a flexible exchange rate have enhanced the Egyptian economy's ability to withstand external fluctuations.
His remarks followed a Monday meeting with Hassan Abdalla, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, where they discussed ways to support and strengthen cooperation and monitor developments in Egypt's economic reform programme.
Clarke affirmed in statements after the meeting that the discussions 'represented an important opportunity to reaffirm the strength and solidity of the partnership between the International Monetary Fund and Egypt.'
In a post on the X platform, he added, 'We discussed ways to enhance the resilience of the Egyptian economy in the face of external shocks, and we stressed the importance of continuing to implement policies that promote economic stability.'
The IMF Deputy Managing Director indicated that 'the Central Bank of Egypt's adoption of a flexible exchange rate system, along with pursuing a balanced monetary policy, has had a direct positive impact on strengthening the Egyptian economy's ability to cope with global fluctuations, curb inflation, and increase remittances from Egyptians working abroad, reflecting the state's commitment to effective and sustainable economic reforms.' He also noted that Egypt has made 'notable progress' on inflation and remittances from Egyptians abroad.
The meeting included a comprehensive review of positive developments in macroeconomic indicators, against the backdrop of the state's efforts within the national economic reform programme, which receives technical and financial support from the IMF.
Discussions also touched upon measures taken to stimulate investment and increase foreign currency inflows, particularly through remittances from Egyptians working abroad, alongside ongoing coordination between the central bank and the government in addressing inflationary pressures and supporting a downward trend in prices.
The visit of the IMF Deputy Managing Director to Egypt comes in the context of continuous follow-up on the implementation of joint cooperation programmes and to affirm the Fund's commitment to supporting the Egyptian state's efforts towards achieving comprehensive and sustainable economic growth.

Gaza 'freedom flotilla' rescues four migrants at sea
A group of activists heading for Gaza on a "freedom flotilla" say they have rescued four migrants at sea in an encounter with the Libyan coastguard. The yacht Madleen, whose crew includes climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, set off from an Italian port four days ago in a symbolic bid to break Israel 's blockade of the territory. Sailing in the Mediterranean on Thursday, the ship was diverted by a mayday signal from an EU border patrol drone, leading it to a deflating vessel in Egypt 's search and rescue zone, organisers said. They said 30 to 40 people were on board. As the Madleen drew closer, its crew saw a Libyan coastguard vessel approach and four people jump into the water, according to a statement from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. It said the Madleen's crew rescued the four people, who were identified as refugees from Sudan. "People would rather throw themselves into the sea than be taken to Libya," said French politician Rima Hassan, who is on the voyage. A statement from the organisers said: "The individuals rescued had fled violence and persecution in Sudan, only to face further violence, detention and torture in Libya." They are appealing to Greece, Italy or Malta to take the people to safety. Ms Hassan is a French member of the European Parliament who is of Palestinian descent. She has been barred from entering Israel because of her opposition to the war in Gaza. Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham is also on board. A previous voyage to Gaza ended in May when a different ship was hit by drones, which Freedom Flotilla organisers blamed on Israel. The yacht Madleen is named after a Gazan fisherwoman, according to the organisation, which says the flotilla is "carrying a cargo of hope and humanitarian aid". Israel blockaded all aid to Gaza for 11 weeks beginning in March. A limited amount of aid began entering last month, with food now being distributed by a private US foundation whose operations have been marred by violence. The rate of young children suffering from acute malnutrition in Gaza has nearly tripled since the ceasefire collapsed in March, according to data released by the UN on Thursday. It said about 3,000 children screened in the second half of May were affected. That was almost three times the rate in February, when a pause in fighting allowed for hundreds of aid trucks to enter Gaza each day. The Israeli army said on Thursday that Hamas was "doing everything in its power to sabotage" aid deliveries by a new US foundation. It released what it said was a recording of a Gaza resident blaming Hamas for gunfire near the aid sites. "They want to foil the plan so that the aid will go to them," the army quoted the person as saying.

The country also leads the Arab world across all major categories, including business, technology, data skills, and AI maturity, positioning itself as the region's leading hub for digital readiness and Global Skills Report 2025, published by Coursera on Wednesday, draws from the learning activity of more than 170 million users worldwide and benchmarks performance across over 100 accompanying AI Maturity Index provides a broader view, factoring in academic publications and metrics from the IMF and OECD to measure national progress in AI research, innovation, and UAE ranked 38th globally overall, 17th in business, 46th in data, 53rd in technology, and 32nd in AI maturity, making it the top performer in the Arab world across all four categories, and first in MENA when it comes to overall skills readiness.'The UAE is positioning itself for a tech-driven future, with 87% of employers emphasising technological literacy, AI, and big data as their top priorities,' the report said, linking the country's performance to its national efforts to transition into a knowledge-based economy powered by skilled Emirati country also boasts the highest rate of Coursera learners in the region, with 13% of its labour force actively engaged on the platform.
