Police link 'brutal' bottle attack on priest to man found dead in same town
Father John Murray was preparing a service at St Patrick's Church in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland when he was assaulted in the place of worship.
The man entered church at around 10am this morning and attacked the priest with a glass bottle before leaving straight away.
He was taken to hospital for treatment for his head injury where he remains in a serious condition, police have said.
Hours later, a murder inquiry was launched after reports that a man had died around midday.
Officers have since arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of murder andbelieve the two incidents may be interlinked.
Superintendent Norman Haslett said: 'Enquiries are at an early stage and, at this time, we suspect this may be connected to a serious assault in the St Patrick's Avenue area of Downpatrick on Sunday.'
Speaking after the attack on Father Murray, DCI McBurney said: 'This was a completely shocking and brutal attack and has left the priest with a serious head injury.
'Our enquiries are ongoing into this incident, and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed the assault, or has any information to contact Police on 101 and quoting reference 543 of 10/08/25.'
Downpatrick Family of Parishes said in a statement: 'Parishioners will be aware of an incident in St Patrick's Church earlier today.
'Fr Murray is currently receiving medical treatment. We thank you for your prayers and well wishes.'
Chris Hazzard, the Sinn Fein MP for South Down condemned what he called a 'cowardly' act.
He wrote on Facebook: 'I was shocked and saddened to hear the news from Downpatrick this morning that Father Murray was attacked in St Patrick's Church.
'My thoughts and prayers are with him, and I wish him a full and speedy recovery.'
Northern Ireland Assembly member Cathy Mason said she was 'horrified' to hear of the attack.
'The attack on Father Murray in St Patrick's Church, Downpatrick, this morning is deeply shocking', she wrote online. More Trending
'No one should ever face violence, least of all in a place of worship. This was a shameful act and must be condemned outright.
'My thoughts are with Father Murray and I hope he makes a swift and full recovery.'
Colin McGrath, an SDLP councillor, said the community had been 'shocked' by the 'disgusting attack'.
He told Northern Ireland World: 'For this to happen in the church is particularly disgusting and I have spoken to many members of the community who are shocked and upset that this has taken place.'

An American has been blasted after mocking police for rolling out machete drop-off bins across Victoria in a bid to tackle a surge in knife violence. The US resident, who frequently addresses conservative political topics on his TikTok page Republican Reads Comments, wasted no time labelling the initiative 'silly'. Machete bins have been placed around Victoria where locals can dispose of their blades before a state-wide ban takes effect on September 1. The ban will be brought in after the state was rocked by a spate of knife attacks, including a wild ten-person brawl at Northland Shopping Centre in May. The US resident questioned why taxpayer dollars were being wasted on the bins and not being spent on hiring more officers to protect the public. 'So when a criminal sees one of these boxes, when they're getting ready to do what criminals do, which is commit crime, they're going to say to themselves, "Gee, I better just drop my knife in the machete bin, because I wouldn't want anyone to get hurt",' he said sarcastically. 'I've seen a lot of ridiculous stuff over the years here in the United States, but this, this is pretty silly. Common sense is hard.' The US resident was immediately roasted online, as several Aussies said he should take a closer look at the problems in his own country. 'I don't think anyone from the USA is in any place to criticise any other country,' one said. 'I couldn't imagine having to choose between my kids going to school and getting shot or homeschooling them.' 'You realise this worked with our guns right?' another said. 'Australia hasn't had a fatal mass shooting since 1996 because sensible laws work,' a third added. 'Now Victoria is banning machetes to tackle knife crime, and we believe this will help too. 'Meanwhile, the US had over 600 mass shootings last year that is almost two a day! We don't need that kind of freedom.' Others pointed out Prime Minister John Howard's gun buyback in the 90's, after Martin Bryant murdered 35 people in Port Arthur using semi-automatic rifles, was proof these policies worked. One commented that Australia hasn't had a fatal mass shooting since 1996 because sensible laws work, not the freedom to bear arms. 'Australia has some of the toughest gun laws in the world, and gun crimes are relatively rare. But knife crimes are becoming more common,' they said. 'Now Victoria is banning machetes to tackle knife crime, and we believe this will help too.' Some social media users sided with the US resident and said the machete bins brought shame to their state. 'I'm an Aussie, trust me when I say we are all embarrassed,' one said. 'Someone inclined to carry illegal weapons isn't just going to go, "Oh wow. I should be a good person now and put this in a bin",' another said. 'The Victorian government is the laughing stock of the world,' a third added. Another claimed it would just motivate criminals to use other weapons. 'If you outlaw all the guns, they'll use machetes,' they wrote. 'If you outlaw machetes, they'll use hammers. A machete amnesty will run until November 30 so residents can dispose of their blades at one of more than 40 bins installed at select police stations across metropolitan and regional Victoria. There is currently an interim machete sales ban in place. Shopping centres have emerged as new crime hotspots involving machetes with machete-related gang brawls prompting lockdowns and spurring swift police action. In 2025 alone, Victoria Police have confiscated nearly 7000 edged weapons, including swords, knives, and machetes, averaging 44 seizures a day, a notable spike from previous years. On the weekend a 14-year-old boy was attacked by six men wielding machetes at Werribee Plaza. It followed a violent brawl at the same location just days earlier. Penalties for possessing a machete will be up to two years in prison and fines of more than $47,000.

Palestine Action ban risks furthering its squalid agenda
Last month Yvette Cooper, the home secretary, used the blunt instrument of the Terrorism Act to classify Palestine Action as a proscribed organisation. For anyone who doubted that the move was a political misstep, the weekend's protests provided a vivid illustration of its predictable consequences. Within minutes of the start of an anti-Israeli demonstration in Parliament Square, police had no choice but to arrest those openly expressing support for the group, with many inciting their own arrest by brandishing signs that read 'I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action'. By the evening, 522 people had been detained, the most arrests at a single event since the poll tax riots. Dozens of police officers were called upon to carry off some activists, allowing them to pose as the apotheosis of the politically oppressed martyr. • A history of Palestine Action: from birth to ban This unseemly spectacle was avoidable. It was unwise from the outset to ban Palestine Action, a disorderly group of ideological vandals, when other bona fide hostile military groupings, like the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, remain unproscribed under British law. The dubious decision to elevate Palestine Action to the rank of groups such as Hamas and al-Qaeda risks lending unearned legitimacy to the perception that pro-Palestinian political speech is being curbed. It also risks playing into activists' hands by colluding in their self-conception as middle-class freedom fighters. They are no such thing. The police officers deployed to Westminster acted properly in making hundreds of arrests. Brazenly championing a known terrorist organisation is a crime that cannot go unpunished. That Palestine Action's supporters were handed such an opportunity to promote their agenda is the real cause for regret. There is no doubting that Palestine Action is a thoroughly pernicious organisation. The 'direct action' it engages in is a euphemism for criminal behaviour. But while a proportion of Saturday's demonstrators were ideologically confused but non-violent fellow-travellers of the group, Palestine Action's organisational core is made up of hardened, politically motivated criminals. Founded in 2020 by hard-line activists with roots in Extinction Rebellion, Palestine Action's self-described campaign to 'destabilise the Zionist project' has escalated since it has been able to capitalise on the public attention that has followed Hamas's attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. Palestine Action's activists have now engaged in an estimated 300 acts of increasingly violent criminal damage. In a series of occupations of factories linked to Israel, they have smashed up machinery, broken windows and ceilings, and engaged in aggravated trespass. Last year an activist from the group filmed themselves slashing a painting of Arthur Balfour at Cambridge University. In August 2024, in a late night attack on a factory in Bristol and armed with whips and axes, activists caused £1 million of damage, assaulting employees who tried to intervene and attacking two police officers with sledgehammers. In its most serious attack, which led to its proscription three days later, the group infiltrated RAF Brize Norton. There, two refuelling tankers were spray-painted and other aircraft attacked with crowbars, inflicting £7 million in damage. That the group perpetrated one of the most serious breaches of a military establishment on British soil in recent decades testifies to its malign purposes and should chasten those inclined to sympathise with its cause. However, there are already legal mechanisms for prosecuting and punishing any crimes Palestine Action's activists have committed. Those existing legal mechanisms are what should have been used to curb their activities. Having unwisely branded them terrorists, the government has distracted attention from the serious transgressions that should be the beginning and end of their reputation.

Man arrested after Central London quadruple stabbing leaves father and son dead
The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that 31-year-old Hassan Cevik has been charged with murder after Terry McMillan, 58, and his son, Brendan, 27, died in a daylight mass stabbing Police have charged a man with two counts of murder after a father and son were killed in a shocking stabbing in central London that took place in broad daylight. Four people were stabbed in the Monday, July 28, incident, which took place at a business on Long Lane in Southwark at around 1pm. Tragically, dad and businessman Terry McMillan, 58, was killed alongside his son Brendan McMillan, 27, in the horrifying mass stabbing. Both victims were from Chislehurst, Bromley. Two other men injured in the incident suffered stab wounds and were rushed to hospital by responding emergency services. Police officers arriving at the scene arrested one individual in the aftermath, who was then also taken to the hospital for medical treatment. The Metropolitan Police have identified the arrested man as British citizen Hassan Cevik, 31, of Mount Pleasant Lane in Hackney, who was discharged from hospital over a week later on Saturday, August 9. Officers charged him with two counts of murder a day later on Sunday. Hassan Cevik is also facing an additional charge of grievous bodily harm in relation to a third man, aged 47, as well as possession of an offensive weapon. The 31-year-old will appear before magistrates in Croydon on Monday. Tribute to 'kindest, funniest' man Brendan MacMillan, 27, was an avid rugby player whose team paid a touching tribute to a kind and funny man, who his teammates will miss "more than words can say." Old Colfeians Rugby Club shared the following tribute on Instagram in the aftermath of Brendan's death, stating: 'Yesterday, Old Colfeians lost a member of our family, one of the kindest, funniest, most genuine people you could ever meet. 'Brendan lit up every room he walked into, forever smiling, always cracking a joke and always full of life. His absence will be deeply felt for a long time to come. 'We will miss him more than words can say and we'll always carry his memory with us. We are also mourning the loss of his beloved father, Terry, a long time supporter and sponsor of the club. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace, Brendan McMillan. Rest in peace, Terry McMillan.'
