Railways successfully pilot tests advanced signalling system to prevent accidents
NEW DELHI: In a significant move to enhance rail safety and eliminate accidents caused by human error and faulty signalling like that at Balasore, which claimed 296 lives, the railways has successfully completed pilot runs of the new Direct Drive Electronic Interlocking (DDEI) system at three stations, including Jammu and Tajpur (Madhya Pradesh).
The new signalling system eliminates human interface and will be used across the railway network in the future.
DDEI represents a major technological shift in railway signalling. Unlike conventional systems that rely on mechanical linkages and relay-based interlocking, DDEI directly controls points (track switches) and signals through advanced electronic components and software. This drastically reduces human intervention, thereby minimising the scope for operational errors, railway officials said.
The system ensures that all switches are correctly aligned, the track is free from obstruction, and level crossing gates are securely closed before a train is allowed to proceed. It also guarantees that only one route is cleared at a time, preventing conflicting train movements.
The railway ministry had taken up the pilot projects in FY 2023-24 as a part of the plan to improve the signaling system. 'The results are encouraging, and now it can be used extensively,' said a railway official.

Electronic interlocking is a key safety mechanism in railway operations, ensuring safe train movements through stations and junctions. While traditional electronic interlocking (EI) systems rely heavily on relays to manage signals and switches, DDEI eliminates the need for most relays by directly monitoring and controlling signaling gear. It also detects gear positions in real time, further reducing the potential for mishaps.
Railway sources said the use of Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) in DDEI reduces the requirement of conventional copper cable by 60–70%, thereby providing protection against lightning. 'Number of relays also reduces by about 70%, thereby reducing maintenance cost and making it easier to locate any fault,' an official said.
Relay is a device that controls the electrical circuit that operates the EI.

Now, Gaps Emerge On Pardi Flyover
Nagpur: Within just two years after three of the five legs of the Pardi Flyover were opened, multiple gaps between two spans or joints on the Itwari to Bhandara Road stretch and near the rotary have surfaced. While commuters have raised concerns about the gaps on the busy stretch, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), which implemented the project, has claimed that there is no cause for alarm. TOI visited the spot on Friday and observed a big gap between the two spans of the flyover on the Itwari or Wardhaman Nagar leg. These gaps have raised serious concerns among commuters, who claimed that they could lead to accidents or cause their valuables, like mobiles or other materials, to fall into them. Since the five-legged flyover, dubbed as 'Khekda Flyover' for its crab-like structure, was announced, it has faced several controversies. A span of the bridge collapsed in October 2021 during construction. The NHAI finally opened the Itwari (Wardhaman Nagar), Kalamna, and Bhandara Road legs of the flyover in September 2023, while the remaining two legs — Manewada and Central Avenue — were opened in February this year. On the next day of its opening, a large chunk of loose concrete fell on a car passing below, damaging it completely. The issue has been primarily witnessed on the leg that was opened in September 2023. A senior NHAI official said that there is no need for alarm. "The gap in the joints is visible because of the rubber seal falling. We will soon install the rubber seals again. There is no problem with the structural integrity of the flyover," said the official. However, locals and commuters are not convinced. "Since the flyover has opened, one issue or another is arising in it. It already took a decade to complete, and now these things are happening, raising serious questions about the quality of the work," said a commuter.

Chandigarh administration expands electric vehicle incentives, increases quota for e-cars
1 2 Chandigarh: In a bid to jumpstart the city's sluggish EV adoption, the UT administration has rolled out fresh initiatives to reignite public interest. As part of the renewed push for e-mobility, the incentive framework under the Chandigarh Electric Vehicle Policy-2022 has been expanded, following a sharp decline in e-car registrations after the initial incentive quota was exhausted. Under the original policy, the first 2,000 electric four-wheelers registered in the city were eligible for incentives of up to Rs 1.5 lakh, calculated at Rs 5,000 per kWh of fixed battery capacity. This quota was exhausted in Nov 2023, after which the number of e-cars being registered dropped significantly. From Nov to March 2024, only around 200 e-cars were registered. In the first quarter of the current financial year, it is learnt that not a single e-car was registered out of the 1,188 EVs recorded. To address this, the UT Electric Vehicle Advisory Committee, in its meeting held on Thursday, decided to increase the quota by another 1,500 e-cars, making them eligible for incentives under the policy. The administration also confirmed that incentives for the 200 e-cars registered after the original quota was exhausted (applications for which were pending) will be released within 15 days. A new insurance incentive of up to Rs 5,000 will be introduced for e-bikes priced under Rs 1.5 lakh. For e-cycles, the upper limit of the monetary incentive is being increased from Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000. As per the policy, the first 25,000 e-cycles purchased during the policy period are eligible for a 25% subsidy on the cost of the bicycle, subject to the cap. The meeting, chaired by UT chief secretary Rajeev Verma, also reviewed the progress of EV charging infrastructure and discussed expansion. The final decision on the revised incentives and related measures will be submitted to the UT administrator for approval before implementation. The administration has set a target of achieving 18% EV penetration by the end of the current financial year. In FY 2024–25, Chandigarh had already reached 13.5% EV penetration, ranking third in the country, only behind Tripura and Delhi.
