Siemens Energy secures $1.6bln project to advance Saudi Arabia's energy transition with new power plants

Zawya12-03-2025

Dammam: Siemens Energy has been awarded a USD 1.6 billion project, with Harbin Electric International as the EPC contractor, to provide key technologies for the Rumah 2 and Nairyah 2 gas-fired power plants in Saudi Arabia. Located in the western and central regions, the plants will add 3.6 gigawatts of power to the national grid – enough to supply around 1.5 million homes. The project includes long-term maintenance agreements to support the plants' operational reliability over the next 25 years.
Core components for the power plants will be manufactured at the Siemens Energy Dammam Hub, which is currently expanding to increase local production capacity and support Saudi Arabia's energy sector.
Rumah 2 and Nairyah 2 will rank among the world's largest combined-cycle power plants. They will replace aging oil-fired stations, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 60% compared to traditional oil-based power generation. Additionally, the plants are being designed to be compatible with advanced CO2 capture and storage technologies, supporting Saudi Arabia's long-term emissions reduction goals.
"Supplying key technologies for the Rumah 2 and Nairyah 2 power plants directly supports Saudi Arabia's energy transition and its goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2060," said Ahmed ElSerry, Head of Gas Services Sales, Middle East. 'By manufacturing critical components at our Siemens Energy Dammam Hub, this project further strengthens local production capabilities and builds expertise within the Kingdom, contributing to a more resilient energy sector,' he added.
Siemens Energy will supply six SGT6-9000HL gas turbines, four SST6-5000 steam turbines, eight SGen6-3000W generators, two SGen6-2000P generators, and associated auxiliary equipment, with each site generating approximately 1.8 gigawatts of electricity.
This order further strengthens Siemens Energy's established presence in Saudi Arabia's Independent Power Producer (IPP) market, solidifying its role in delivering a significant share of Saudi Arabia's modern power generation. Building on the success of previous projects like Taiba 2 and Qassim 2 – which together add 4 gigawatts to the national grid – Siemens Energy continues to drive local manufacturing expansion and infrastructure modernization, playing a key role in the country's energy sector.
Rumah 2 and Nairyah 2 will initially be integrated into the grid in simple cycle mode in 2027, transitioning to full operation as combined-cycle power plants by the following year.

Sterling holds its own against stronger dollar, trade optimism lends supports

Sterling ticked higher against the dollar on Thursday, one of the few major currencies to hold its own against the greenback which regained ground after weak U.S. data dragged it lower on Wednesday. The pound was up 0.14% at $1.3574, while against the euro it was up 0.1% at 84.16 pence. Sterling remains a touch away from a more than three-year high hit on May 26, underpinned by ongoing dollar weakness with the pound up over 8% this year. Also helping is the fact the UK is the only country to have struck a trade deal with the U.S and was spared from higher U.S. steel and aluminium tariffs, though analysts question how beneficial those factors are. "The trade deal does matter," said Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG Group. "You might argue it's not a proper trade deal and that it doesn't solve all the problems, but at least it's a sign that there's a more compelling reason to hold the pound rather than be worrying about the euro," Beauchamp added. The Bank of England (BoE) will meet on June 19 to deliver its next policy decision with market bets firmly on the monetary policy committee (MPC) keeping rates steady. There had been expectations of a further 25 bps cut from the BoE at its June meeting but bets were slashed following weak economic data and a hotter-than-expected inflation read last month. On Tuesday, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said he was sticking with a "gradual and careful" approach to cutting interest rates as global trade policy turmoil increasingly clouds the outlook. Reassurance came on Wednesday with a survey showing Britain's services sector returned to tepid growth last month. (Reporting by Lucy Raitano and Johann M Cherian, Editing by Ed Osmond)

Teledyne GFD partners with IDS to manufacture in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia - Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection (Teledyne GFD) is partnering with Industrial Detection Solutions (IDS) to establish a new 699 sq m manufacturing facility in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. This partnership will enable the local production of high-precision sensors for detecting toxic and combustible gases, helping to protect workers and assets at oil and gas production/drilling facilities, LNG/CNG plants, and refining and petrochemical sites. A grand opening ceremony will officially declare the plant open on June 19, the company said. Gas detection is an essential safety aspect throughout the oil and gas industry. With so much activity in the Middle East, Teledyne GFD wanted to bring the production of key gas detection solutions closer to their point of use. This strategy also aligns with the IKTVA (In-Kingdom Total Value Add) programme that promotes local manufacturing in KSA. IKTVA is an initiative to increase economic diversification and create a sustainable ecosystem in Saudi Arabia's oil and gas industry. The programme aims to increase the use of in-Kingdom suppliers, expand local supply chain capabilities and capacities, and drive industry collaboration through supplier development. By partnering with Industrial Detection Solutions, Teledyne GFD will help to meet the ambitions of the IKTVA via the local manufacture of popular products like its DM-700 toxic gas sensor, and FP-700 and IR-700 combustible gas sensors. 'Our new partnership with Industrial Detection Solutions ensures that manufacturing is closer to both customers and suppliers, enabling even faster delivery of class-leading gas detection products in support of more efficient supply chains,' says Thomas Moeller, VP Sales & Marketing at Teledyne GFD. 'The proven solutions manufactured in KSA will better serve a vast regional industry that recognises the importance of a robust and prevalent safety culture. We are proud to be part of KSA's remarkable ongoing journey of economic and industrial growth, and we look forward to a successful future together.' The DM-700 is a non-intrusive 'smart' sensor that detects and monitors oxygen and toxic gases in the air using electrochemical sensor technology. The intelligent, plug-in, field-replaceable cell automatically recognises gas type and range. Teledyne GFD's FP-700 is also a non-intrusive 'smart' sensor, this time for the detection and monitoring of combustible gases over the range of 0-100% LEL using catalytic bead sensor technology. The IR-700 is a similar solution for combustible hydrocarbon gases. It uses miniature non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) optical sensor technology to detect and monitor gases over the range of 0-100% LEL. All of these gas detectors support maximum safety with an innovative design that virtually eliminates sensor failure due to water ingress, corrosion, vibration or transient spikes, the company added.
