Retired Woman Loses RM436,000 In Online IPO Investment Scam
Penang Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the woman lodged a report with the Timur Laut Commercial Crime Investigation Division after discovering she had been deceived by a fraudulent scheme.
The scam was promoted through a WhatsApp group called 'enspire capital', which promised high-returns through IPO investments. The victim was instructed to download an app named 'freeman plus' as the investment platform.
'Between May 12 and June 2, she made 56 fund transfers to four different company accounts. Despite the promises, she received no returns. Instead, the suspects kept requesting additional payments,' he said in a statement tonight.
Investigations found the victim used her personal and Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings to finance the so-called investments.
Mohd Alwi said efforts are ongoing to identify and track down the syndicate responsible. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

According to the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), this was the total amount of complaints received from 2020 till 2024. 'But, the government is bound not to disclose any specific information, including case examples involving whistleblowers, to ensure that the principle of protecting confidentiality can be fully maintained, as enshrined by the law. 'The government is committed to ensuring that enforcement agencies have successfully conducted investigations and taken follow-up actions based on the information provided by the whistleblowers, without having to disclose their identities or personal information,' she said in a written Parliamentary reply dated Aug 20. Azalina was responding to Dr Abd Ghani Ahmad (PN-Jerlun) who asked about the effectiveness of the Act in protecting whistleblowers. Azalina said all enforcement agencies conducting investigations under Act 711 must take all necessary steps to ensure confidentiality of information. 'Each investigation must be carried out according to strict procedures,' she said. 'In terms of implementation, confidentiality of whistleblowers must be carefully protected and only relevant officers can know their identities,' she added. Amendments to the Act were passed in the Dewan Rakyat on July 23. The new Section 11 (1)(a) introduced in the amendments that allow enforcement agencies to maintain protection for whistleblowers who were involved in misconduct or acted to avoid disciplinary action.

New parking facility to ease congestion at Rh Joseph Jarrau

SIBU (Aug 21): A long-standing parking issue at Rumah Joseph Jarrau in Tanjung Bekakap is set to be resolved with the construction of a new 100-metre-long parking facility, scheduled to begin next week. The RM93,000 project, funded under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) special allocation for the Bawang Assan state constituency, is expected to be completed within three months. According to Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie, the project was initiated following a complaint lodged by Tuai Rumah Joseph to Councillor Johnny Ganning several months ago. The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC). 'I have visited the site several times, and I'm pleased the project is now officially set to begin,' Lau said during the handover ceremony to the appointed contractor, Ismawi Enterprise, on Tuesday. Lau, who is SRDC Standing Committee chairman, said the parking facility will benefit not only the longhouse residents but also churchgoers in the area, particularly on weekends and during festive seasons. Expressing his gratitude, Tuai Rumah Joseph thanked all parties involved for approving the much-needed project. 'This facility will ease the parking situation for both residents and visitors, particularly during major events,' he said. In a related development, Lau also witnessed the handover of another infrastructure project, the upgrading of Jalan Yong Kok in the Engkilo area. The 95-metre road improvement project, also funded under the RTP for the Bawang Assan constituency, will be carried out in two phases. Both projects aim to enhance basic infrastructure and improve the quality of life for rural residents, in line with the state government's RTP objectives. Five teens plead not guilty: Charges of using abusive words against Zara

Kota Kinabalu: Five teenage girls pleaded not guilty at the Children's Court here Wednesday to the charges of using abusive words against Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir last month. The five made the plea before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus in closed proceedings. Advertisement They are accused of uttering abusive words directed at Zara Qairina, which were heard by the victim, and could have caused her distress. The offence allegedly took place between 10pm and 11pm on July 15. The girls were jointly charged under Section 507C(1)/34 of the Penal Code, which relates to the offence of using or making any threatening, abusive or insulting words, or communication, where a person is likely to feel harassed, distressed, fear or alarmed. It provides for a jail term of up to one year, or fine, or both, on conviction. The court set Sept 25 and Oct 16 for pre-trial case management, trial dates on Dec 8-12 and Dec 15-19. The girls were released on bail of RM5,000 each with RM1,000 deposited in a local surety. Deputy Public Prosecutors Nor Azizah Mohamad, Nik Haslinie Hashim and Deepa Nair Thevaharan appeared for the prosecution. Counsel Datuk Ram Singh, together with counsels Joan Goh and Elmer Prem Gunasan, represented one of the teenagers. The other four were represented by counsels Azhier Farhan Arisin, Abdul Fikry Jaafar, Farah Nazriah Chun Lee, Fareez Salleh and Sylyester Kuan. Counsels for Noraidah Lamat, the late Zara's mother, Hamid Ismail, Shahlan Jufri and four others, were also present at the proceedings. All the counsels for the five teenagers acted on the pro-bono basis. Counsels Dominic Ghani and Nabila Norsahar were present as watching brief on behalf of the Sabah Law Society. During the proceedings, the court also issued a Gag Order under Section 15 of the Child Act. Previously, the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC), in a statement, said it had examined the investigation papers into the student's death, which were referred by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and decided to charge several suspects based on available evidence. The AGC also said an inquest proceeding still needs to be conducted to determine the actual cause of Zara Qairina's death. On Aug 12, the AGC decided to conduct an inquest to ascertain the cause and circumstances behind the death of the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Tun Datu Mustapha student after reviewing the investigation report submitted by PDRM. The Coroner's Court here on Monday set Sept 3 to commence the inquest proceedings.
