Pittsburgh has a dry start to the week, but multiple rain chances move in later on
Following the passage of yesterday's cold front, western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia received some pretty high wind gusts as anticipated during the afternoon.
Several sites across our viewing area gusted to 40mph or higher.
Today will still be fairly breezy in the afternoon, but the gusts should only be around 25-35 mph. Skies are partly cloudy now, but we should trend toward mostly cloudy conditions through the afternoon. There is a low chance of a stray shower or two as well.

Winds will settle down tonight and into the day tomorrow and Tuesday as high pressure nudges closer to our region. This will result in fewer clouds, although not completely clear conditions. Temperatures are expected to largely be near or slightly below seasonal levels for the next few days with highs in the mid-upper 60s to near 70 and lows in the mid to upper 40s.

By Tuesday evening, and especially on Wednesday, rain chances will start to increase as a very slow-moving wave of low pressure migrates from the Plains to the Great Lakes States. The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere that could be rained out will be closer to late June/July levels as opposed to May, which means there's a potential for locally heavy rain as well.

On Wednesday, the low will likely pass just a little to the northwest of Pittsburgh, which may briefly put part of our area in the warm sector. This would lead to predominantly rain, but a few thunderstorms are also possible. Once the low passes to our east Wednesday night into Thursday, cool northwesterly flow will move in and linger through the rest of the week.

Temperatures will be well below normal with highs on Thursday and Friday struggling to make it out of the 50s with lows in the mid-40s. While the main wave of low pressure is expected to move to the east, a remnant elongated low-pressure area called a trough will linger in our region, keeping the potential for light rain showers and plenty of clouds in place through Saturday.

Wednesday will be the last dry day in Pittsburgh for quite some time
It was close, but for the 17th day in a to,w we saw temperatures at or below average in Pittsburgh. We will see above-average temperatures today with highs hitting the mid-80s and morning lows dipping to just around 60 degrees. It'll also be thick enough for us to see the haze in our skies even in the middle of the day. Wildfire smoke's effect in our region through Thursday morning KDKA Weather Center When it comes to air quality, the forecast keeps us in the moderate (yellow) range through Saturday with improving conditions for Sunday and Monday. When it comes to air quality, we watch for three different types of "bad air." Canadian smoke is a collection of what we call fine particles or PM2.5. These concentrations should be highest in the morning during the most stable time of the day. Ozone creation, due to the sun's interaction with Oxygen particles in the atmosphere, happens on sunny days. These levels will be lower than fine particles but will spike in the afternoon. Today should be the last day this week that Ozone will be a concern, with more cloud cover in place for the rest of the week. The good thing about temperatures being on the cool side over the past two and a half weeks is that our severe weather chances have remained low. Severe weather chances will return on Thursday, though, with strong winds being possible just south of a slow-moving cold front that will be in place both Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. A rainy pattern will also be in place for the rest of the week. I have at least a chance for rain every day on the 7-day forecast except today. The heaviest rain of the next week may roll through on Saturday morning just after midnight. Quickly getting back to temperatures, I'll keep highs in the mid-80s on Thursday, with highs dipping to the upper 70s on Friday, with the rain around. Air quality alert for NYC area today, as Canadian wildfire smoke creates hazy conditions
New York City and the surrounding area are under an air quality alert Wednesday. The alert will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. New York officials say the alert will impact the city, along with Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties. Hundreds of wildfires are currently burning in Canada, and the smoke has been spreading into the northern United States for the past few days. Why is there an air quality alert? CBS News New York Smoke and haze continue to drift into the Tri-State region from Canada's prairie provinces. This will lead to poor air quality and hazy sunshine throughout the day. New York City's air quality often suffers in the summer, most notably during heat waves as the result of higher temperatures and humidity levels. Stagnant air traps pollutants from cars and factories, creating high levels of fine particulates that react to sunlight, leading to or worsening respiratory issues. Sometimes, though, it has nothing to do with pollution. In June 2023, northerly winds funneled smoke from wildfires in the Canadian province of Quebec directly into New York City. This led to an extremely hazardous AQI of 484 -- not only the highest level ever recorded in the city, but the worst air quality in the entire world on that date. Air Quality Index (AQI) explained CBS News New York The Air Quality Index measures air pollution and the associated health risks. The system has six ratings: Good (green): 0 to 50 Moderate (yellow): 51 to 100 Unhealthy for sensitive groups (orange): 101 to 150 Unhealthy (red): 151 to 200 Very unhealthy (purple): 201 to 300 Hazardous (marron): 301 and higher An air quality alert is issued when the AQI exceeds 100. CBS News New York Smoke from the wildfires can sometimes cause the sun and moon to appear with a reddish glow. The color of the sky is determined by how sunlight interacts with particles in the air. So when smoke introduces more particulate matter, it can also impact the color. Matt Sitkowski, the science editor in chief at The Weather Channel, explained that blue-colored light has shorter wavelengths and red-colored light has longer ones. "When smoke is in the atmosphere, it not only makes the sun dimmer, it increases the amount and size of particulate matter in the atmosphere that absorbs more of the shorter wavelengths, leaving longer wavelengths to reach our eyes," he told CBS News in a previous interview. NYC weather forecast this week CBS News New York Temperatures will continue to rise Wednesday, reaching the mid-to-upper 80s by the afternoon hours. Along with those rising temperatures will come increasingly humid conditions. For tonight, despite the haze, skies will remain mostly clear with lows in the 60s. Thursday looks to be the hottest day of the year so far, with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s for most of the area, except coastal areas, where highs will only reach the 70s. Humidity levels will also continue to rise, and there will be a stray chance of an afternoon/evening thunderstorm for the northwestern suburbs. As for the smoke and haze, it will remain in place as well. Friday will be partly cloudy, warm and humid with a chance of thunderstorms. Rainy commute Wednesday in Chicago with temperature drop ahead
A rainy day is ahead on Wednesday in Chicago. Scattered showers are expected throughout the day. The bulk of the rain moves in in the morning, while tapering off in the afternoon. The morning commute will be slow with heavy rain bringing ponding in the roadways. A warm and humid start to the day will soon turn to highs dropping to the 50s by the afternoon. Showers are expected to taper off by Wednesday night. Highs will stay in the 70s through the weekend, The next chance for storms will be on Sunday.
