Wildfires force closure of 2 campgrounds in Narrow Hills Provincial Park

Two popular campgrounds in northern Saskatchewan will remain closed for the entire 2025 season after sustaining significant damage from wildfires.
Saskatchewan Parks confirmed Tuesday that the Gem Lakes and Lost Echo campgrounds in Narrow Hills Provincial Park will not reopen this year. The park, located about 130 kilometres northeast of Prince Albert, was the site of an aggressive wildfire that grew to nearly 15,000 hectares at its peak.
"It's still high risk," said Paul Johnson, assistant deputy minister with Saskatchewan Parks. "There still are fires burning in and around the park with lots of smoke. … It's still a difficult situation up and around Narrow Hills Provincial Park."
While the rest of the park remains closed for now, officials say areas outside of the damaged campgrounds may reopen in a few weeks if conditions improve.
Business owners hit hard
The closure is a major blow to local businesses that rely on summer tourism. Shelly Lawrence, who owns Rainbow Lodge on nearby Piprell Lake, was forced to leave last Thursday.

"It's already impacted our business quite a bit with having to cancel prior to the May long weekend," she said.
"It's a huge loss for us."
The Gem Lakes are a popular destination in Narrow Hills. Known for their hiking trails and camping, they attract thousands of visitors each summer.
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is asking people to stay away from the area, even as the immediate fire risk decreases. Officials say burned trees could fall without warning and the forest needs time to recover.
Narrow Hills is one of several regions across the province facing wildfire challenges as warm, dry conditions continue. Fire bans remain in effect in many areas.
Lawrence said that while she waits and hopes for a clear solution, she appreciates the work being done by firefighters.

Ahoy! These sailors are sharing their passion for wind, waves and open water in Port Stanley
After years of sailing and racing around the world, a couple of friends who met in London, Ont., are starting their own sailing school in Port Stanley. Adam Goarley and Illia Malovychko want to share their passion for all things water, wind and waves with anyone who wants to build confidence and competence on the water through their new school, Apex Sailing. "Over the last few years, we used to do lots of racing all over Ontario. We've been doing lots of cruising all through the North Channel area, and we just realized how hard it is for people to actually get out and sail," said Goarley. "There are very few younger people involved in the sailing world. And a lot of the time when people are retired, they try to get into sailing, and it's been a lifelong dream of theirs, but there's not very many options to actually learn how to sail." Goarley, who is from London, started sailing at age 11 and has explored the Great Lakes and raced in the Caribbean. Malovychko, who is from Ukraine, was a former member of the Ukrainian National Sailing Team, competing across Europe, and came to Canada to be a sailing instructor and race coach. "I've been sailing my whole life," said Malovychko. "I just can't emphasize enough how amazing sailing is as a sport, and I wanted to share that with the rest of the world." The pair bought a J/24 sailboat for the school, a high-performance keelboat that is between a dinghy and a cruiser. The boat is docked at the Lions Landing Marine Park in Port Stanley, a short distance from the shores of Lake Erie. The school's flagship program, the Sailing Basics Course, consists of four three-hour sessions aboard the J/24, focusing on wind awareness, sail trimming, and safe manoeuvring. For couples seeking a unique experience, the Couples Sailing Adventure offers a one-hour private session guided by an instructor. Private lessons tailored to individual skill levels are also available. "There's a lot of thinking strategy involved. There's a lot of technical elements, and there's a physical element to it as well," said Malovychko. "But the most important would be the ability to adapt because when you're sailing, everything's changing, the weather, the wind, clouds. Everything's moving, and you have to adapt to sail." While Apex is currently operating with a single vessel, Goarley and Malovychko hope to expand the school to five boats over the next two years to foster competitive sailing and build a sailing community. "We live in such a great place with so much access to water and to sailing, and very few people do it," said Goarley. "It's close to London, close to St. Thomas. It makes it easily accessible for people to come down and learn."

Terrace Bay launching new summer music series
A new event is bringing live music to Terrace Bay this summer. Sunset Sounds will take place July 12 and 26 at the Terrace Bay Beach, and on August 9 and 23 at Lighthouse Park. "We've been looking at having something for our community and adjacent communities for the past few years and trying to bring sort of like a music in the park type of thing event," said Michelle Malashewski, community development assistant with Terrace Bay. Malashewski said the goal is to create something similar to Thunder Bay's Live on the Waterfront series. "We would, of course, like to attract people to our community, we're always looking at ways," she said. "But it's also ways to keep our residents and locals in the area, something to do without ... travelling out of town." "It's just a way to just sit back and relax and enjoy music." The lineup for Sunset Sounds is: July 12 — Mitch Tones and Cole Myronuk at Terrace Bay Waterfront July 26 — Katherine Nemec and Pintail Bluegrass Band at Terrace Bay Waterfront August 9 — Sara Kae and Cassidy Houston at Lighthouse Park August 23 — The Gin Tonics at Lighthouse Park. All performances run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. "The live music from the small town performer kind of adds a little pop to the community vibes that you have going on," said Tones, who will be playing solo but is also part of Thunder Bay band Small Town Bad. "People in Canada, of course, are looking to maximize their time outdoors, and the sunny summer days, when we get them, so people are always looking for an excuse to get out, enjoy the sun, grab a cool drink, sit on a patio, go for a walk on the beach, see the scenery," he said. "You're walking around and seeing all this beautiful stuff, and there's just that touch of beautiful music in the air that helps make the day pop." Malashewski said depending on how the summer goes, there is a chance that Sunset Sounds could expand in the future. "We're hoping we can possibly maybe offer them more," she said. "We're looking possibly in the fall." If we could offer early fall, maybe we could do one every weekend," Malashewski said. "Maybe people would prefer like a Sunday afternoon." "We're just sort of trying a Saturday night to see how it works," she said. "But it's sort of nice if you're coming into Terrace Bay and the evening after dinner, go down and listen to some music."
