Spaun wins US Open and first major with monster putt The 34-year-old American finished 72 holes at Oakmont on one-under par 279. Photo: Reuters J.J. Spaun sank a 65-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win the US Open on Sunday, capturing his first major title despite bogeys on five of his first six holes. The 34-year-old American finished 72 holes at Oakmont on one-under par 279 after a closing two-over 72 to defeat Scotland's Robert MacIntyre by two strokes with Norway's Viktor Hovland third on 282. Well behind for most of the day, Spaun watched US leader Sam Burns and Australian Adam Scott stumble back while he charged back with four birdies on the last seven holes. Spaun, the first US Open champion to bogey the first three holes in his final round, sank a 40-foot birdie putt at the par-five 12th, a 22-foot birdie putt at 14 and answered a bogey at 15 with a clutch tap-in birdie at 17 to grab the lead before rolling in the clincher at 18. Spaun wiped tears from his eyes as spectators chanted his name when he walked off the green. The only prior PGA Tour victory in Spaun's career came at the 2022 Texas Open. (AFP)

Fritz downs Zverev to secure first title of year
Fritz downs Zverev to secure first title of year Taylor Fritz celebrates his victory with the trophy. Photo: AFP Taylor Fritz defeated Alexander Zverev in straight sets in a rain-hit final in Stuttgart on Sunday to win his first ATP title of the season. The American eased to a 6-3, 7-6 (7/0) victory despite being held up by a lengthy rain delay early in the second set. Fritz has now won his last five meetings with Zverev and is set to climb to fourth in the world rankings, a place behind the German. Last year's US Open runner-up lifted his first trophy since winning in Eastbourne 12 months ago, also on grass. Top seed Zverev is still waiting to win the first grass-court title of his career and he has never even reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, which gets under way on June 30. Fritz moved into a one-set lead courtesy of a break in the eighth game. He missed the only break point of the second set but raced through the tie-break, winning the last 11 points of the match. South Africa crowned World Test champions
South Africa crowned World Test champions South Africa were decisive winners against Australia in the final at Lord's. Photo: Reuters Aiden Markram's magnificent century guided South Africa to a five-wicket win over Australia in the World Test Championship final at Lord's cricket ground in London on Saturday as the Proteas finally ended their decades-long wait for a major global cricket trophy. South Africa, set 282 to win, finished on 282-5 before lunch on the fourth day, with opening batsman Markram out for 136 when his side were just six runs shy of victory. In 18 previous attempts in the one-day international and T20 World Cups, South Africa had only reached one solitary final. That was in last year's T20 World Cup in Barbados, when they lost to India despite needing just 30 runs from their last 30 balls, with six wickets standing. But they held their nerve on Saturday as they resumed on 213-2, with Markram having reached three figures on Friday. (AFP)
