Trump says US ‘may' or ‘may not' join Israel against Iran

As the direct conflict between Iran and Israel keeps the world guessing about possible US involvement, US President Donald Trump sent a broadly mixed message about possible military action, suggesting that American forces may participate in Israel's strikes against the Islamic republic. 'You don't know that I am going to even do it. You don't know. I may do it, I may not do it, nobody knows what I'm going to do,' the US president said at an event at the White House. Follow developments and reactions here as the world grapples with an unprecedented level of direct confrontation between Israel and Iran, and fears of an all-out war grow.

Russia urges US not to strike Iran, warns world ‘millimetres' from nuclear calamity

Russia is telling the United States not to strike Iran because it would radically destabilise the Middle East, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Wednesday, and Moscow said Israeli strikes risked triggering a nuclear catastrophe. Advertisement Russia signed a strategic partnership with Iran in January and also has a relationship with Israel, although it has been strained by Moscow's war in Ukraine. A Russian offer to mediate in the Israel-Iran conflict has not been taken up. Ryabkov, speaking on the sidelines of an economic forum in St. Petersburg, told Interfax news agency that Moscow was urging Washington to refrain from direct involvement. 'This would be a step that would radically destabilise the entire situation,' Interfax cited Ryabkov as saying, and criticising such 'speculative, conjectural options'. The head of Russia's SVR foreign intelligence service, Sergei Naryshkin, has said the situation between Iran and Israel is now critical, and foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear infrastructure meant the world was 'millimetres' from catastrophe. Advertisement 'Nuclear facilities are being struck,' she said, adding that the UN nuclear safety watchdog had already noted specific damage.

Gaza rescuers say more than 30 killed by Israel fire

Gaza rescuers say more than 30 killed by Israel fire A US- and Israel-backed group began distributing aid in late May, but its operations have been marred by chaotic scenes and dozens of deaths. Photo: AFP Gaza's civil defence agency said 33 people were killed by Israeli fire in the Palestinian territory on Wednesday, including 11 who were seeking aid. The war sparked by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel has ravaged the Gaza Strip and resulted in severe shortages of food, fuel and clean water. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal said that 11 people were killed and more than 100 wounded "after the occupation forces opened fire and launched several shells... at thousands of citizens" who had gathered to queue for food in central Gaza. The military said that its forces operating in central Gaza identified "a group of suspicious individuals" approaching "in a manner that posed a potential threat to the forces". It said its troops then fired "warning shots", but that it was "unaware of injuries". In early March, Israel imposed a total blockade on Gaza, amid a deadlock in truce negotiations, only partially easing restrictions in late May. Since then, chaotic scenes and a string of deadly shootings have occurred near areas where Palestinians have gathered in hopes of receiving aid. The civil defence agency said another 19 people were killed in three Israeli strikes on Wednesday, which it said targeted houses and a tent for displaced people. The Israeli military said regarding one of those attacks that its troops were "operating to dismantle Hamas military capabilities". Three more people were killed in an Israeli air strike on a neighbourhood northeast of Gaza City on Wednesday, Bassal said. The civil defence agency reported that at least 53 people were killed on Tuesday, as they gathered near an aid centre in the southern city of Khan Younis hoping to receive flour. (AFP)
