Pune: A magisterial court on Tuesday granted bail to five people, including the son of a former Karnataka minister, on charge of harbouring expelled NCP functionary Rajendra Hagawane and his elder son, Sushil.
The two were on the run in connection with the alleged suicide of Vaishnavi, Hagawane's younger daughter-in-law, at their home in Bhukum on May 16.
The court of judicial magistrate first class VP Khandare rejected the prosecution's plea to send the accused — Rahul Jadhav (45), Preetam Patil (47), Mohan Begade (59), Amol Jadhav (35) and Bandu Phatak (55) — into custody. The decision was made because the men had been arrested for a bailable offence under provisions of section 249 (b) (harbouring an offender) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The court granted bail to the accused upon furnishing a personal bond and a surety bond in the like amount. Earlier, Bavdhan police's senior inspector Anil Vibhute produced the accused before the court and filed a report to send them to custodial remand for three days.
Assistant public prosecutor Nitin Adagale submitted before the court that custodial interrogation of the accused was essential to collect details of the monetary assistance offered by the five men to Rajendra and his son.

Adagale feared that Rajendra and his son, who are influential people from a political background, could tamper with evidence and threaten witnesses through the accused.
The prosecution sought time to establish the identity of others responsible for harbouring the father-son duo while they were on the run.
Defence lawyers Sushilkumar Pise, Kundalik Gawade, Sachin Jadhav and Shrikant Panhale told the court that the custodial interrogation of their clients was not essential because they were arrested for a bailable offence.
The court upheld the defence plea, sent the accused to magisterial custody remand, and ordered their release on bail.

'Give us jobs': Madrasi Camp resident after Delhi demolition drive, Tamil Nadu govt offers aid in return

'Give us jobs': Madrasi Camp resident after delhi demolition drive, Tamil Nadu govt offers aid to return NEW DELHI: The Tamil Nadu government has pledged full support to residents of Madrasi Camp in Delhi's Jangpura who wish to return to their home districts in Tamil Nadu, following a demolition drive on June 1. The demolition, conducted to remove illegal encroachments along the Barapullah drain in compliance with a Delhi high court order, has left hundreds of families, mostly originally from Tamil Nadu, displaced. Mani, a Tamil resident affected by the demolition, expressed frustration over the lack of opportunities in Tamil Nadu, stating, "They should give jobs to those already in Madras right now, and then they should call us. Why are people roaming around there? First, they should handle Tamil Nadu, then they should look at Delhi. If they had given us jobs, why would we have come to Delhi from Tamil Nadu?" On Sunday, authorities carried out a demolition drive at Madrasi Camp in Jangpura, South East Delhi, following court orders to remove encroachments along the Barapullah drain. The clearance was aimed at addressing flooding problems caused by the narrowing of the drain, which restricts water flow during heavy rainfall. A total of 370 encroachments were removed. Of the affected residents, 189 have been found eligible for resettlement and have been allotted flats in Narela, while 181 were deemed ineligible for rehabilitation. Anil Banka, district magistrate of South East Delhi, on the ongoing demolition drive at Madrasi Camp in the Jangpura area, said to ANI, "This action is being carried out as per the court's orders, and we are removing the encroachments solely based on those directives. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025: Steel Suppliers From Mexico At Lowest Prices (Take A Look) Steel Suppliers | search ads Search Now Undo The Barapulla drain had become narrow, hindering its cleaning and causing issues with water flow. During heavy rains, flooding spreads across the area due to these obstructions. The matter was under consideration in court, which has now permitted us to proceed with the removal starting today. We have also allotted flats in Narela to all eligible residents affected by this drive." He further said, "Notices regarding the encroachments were already given to residents, and until now, 370 illegal encroachments have been demolished. While 189 are eligible for resettlement, 181 are not eligible."

Trump tariff hike threatens to impact $5 billion engineering goods exports: EEPC India

New Delhi: The proposed 50% tariff on all foreign steel and aluminium by US President Donald Trump could hurt India's engineering exports, as these metals and their derivatives account for nearly a quarter of the country's total engineering goods shipments to the US. The annual export of steel, aluminium and their derivatives to the US currently stand at around $5 billion. The 25% tariffs imposed by the US on steel imports (as per the proclamation order dated on 18th March 2025) have created a challenging environment for Indian steel exporters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Elegant New Scooters For Seniors In 2024: The Prices May Surprise You Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Learn More Undo Although India's direct steel exports to the US are relatively low, the tariffs have led to increased global competition and price pressures. The tariffs have also resulted in a shift in trade flows. 'In case the US goes ahead with its plan and impose a 50% tariff on steel, aluminium and their derivatives, exports of these key items will become costlier leading to a likely dip in shipments," said Pankaj Chadha, Chairman, EEPC India, in a statement. Live Events Chadha highlighted that the UK through its trade deal with the US recently got exemptions from 25% tariff on steel and aluminium and suggested that India should also ask for the same kind of waiver during the ongoing bilateral trade agreement (BTA) negotiations with the US. "This is perhaps not the opportune time to introduce such unilateral tariff especially when BTA negotiations are going on. It can make the work of the negotiators tricky. The proposed tariff increase by the Trump administration is likely to impact the engineering exports which are about $5 billion under this head," the EEPC India Chairman said.

Sule-led delegation arrives in Egypt to convey India's stance on terrorism

An all-party delegation led by NCP MP Supriya Sule has reached Egypt to present India's stance on zero tolerance against terrorism. The delegation arrived in Cairo after concluding their visit to Ethiopia on Sunday, Suresh Reddy, India's Ambassador to Egypt, received the delegation. The delegation has a packed and productive schedule in Egypt, including Ministerial engagements, Parliamentary exchanges, interactions with think tanks, media, the Indian community and others. It is one of the seven multi-party delegations India has tasked to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community to emphasise Pakistan's links to terrorism. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7. Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions. The on-ground hostilities ended with an understanding of stopping the military actions following talks between the directors general of military operations of both sides on May 10.
