What do you think of when you think of Piccadilly?
The Advocate in a Thursday story about the once famous cafeteria chain asked that question right off the bat, and it brought back some pleasant memories.
My family years ago headed straight for the Piccadilly cafeteria on Ryan Street right after church when our two children were youngsters. Jamie and Bryan weren't happy about having to stand in the always-long lines of churchgoers, but the wait was always worth it.
We also ate at the Piccadilly on Wednesday evenings and always saw a lot of people we knew whether at the Piccadilly on Ryan or the Piccadilly at the Prien Lake Mall.
When I covered the Louisiana Legislature in Baton Rouge for many years, I ate often at two Piccadilly cafeterias. They were a great place to go when you got tired of eating sandwiches and hamburgers and wanted some meat and vegetables.
The newspaper said Piccadilly was founded in downtown Baton Rouge by T.H. Hamilton in 1944. The headline on the story also asked. 'How has Piccadilly weathered the decades?'
Some who remember the two local Piccadilly cafeterias that closed may recall there was talk about another Piccadilly opening at the mall. However, that turned out to be an unwelcome rumor.
After the Piccadilly chain purchased Morrison Restaurants Inc. in 1998, Piccadilly had about 270 locations. Now, there are only 30 Piccadilly cafeterias left.
There are four in Baton Rouge and one each in Denham Springs, Gretna, Lafayette, Metairie, Monroe and Shreveport. The others are in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Virginia.
Peter Ricchiuti, a business professor at Tulane University, and his students worked to study and track numerous public companies, including Piccadilly in the 1990s. They determined the purchase of Morrison's was a huge blunder for the company because people had loyalty to their own brand of cafeteria.
The company filed for bankruptcy in 2003 because of poor performance. It was purchased by Piccadilly Investments. The purchase took the company private after 27 years of being a public company. It filed for bankruptcy again in 2012. In 2014, it was purchased by Falcon Holdings, which is known for revitalizing struggling businesses.
The decline of Piccadilly is also a story about changing times. Cafeteria-style dining has fallen out of vogue, and the chain has long struggled to court younger customers.
The Tulane professor said, 'If you're not from the South, you associate cafeterias with the worst times in your life — like being hospitalized or being in middle school. That's what they're fighting against.'
In the 70s and 80s, fast food became a much larger part of the American diet, and since Piccadilly's heyday, dining out in general has become a bigger thing.
The newspaper said in an attempt to cut costs, keep up with the times or adapt to the economy, Piccadilly also lost some defining features. At one time, there were cloth napkins, some live music and commissioned murals.
Jeannine Gerald Schutte, 70, was hired to play the piano at the Piccadilly at Bon Marche Mall in Baton Rouge when she was in high school (1968-72) and got free meals. Her favorite was mac and cheese and chocolate pie for dessert.
Schutte talked about busloads of soldiers stopping and readers wrote the newspaper about their baseball or basketball teams stopping at the Piccadilly cafeteria for meals. Seniors on gambling or vacation trips do that these days at fast food places, and you don't want to be there.
The Advocate said a former executive vice president of Piccadilly said Mother's Day was the biggest day of their year from 1971 to 2001.
One Piccadilly customer said something that best defines what Piccadilly means to a lot of people.
'Piccadilly is all about family,' he said. 'It's about places that you went with your parents, with your children, maybe your extended family.' He said it was a place he loved to go to and spend quality time together and it was a time in his life when getting together with his three kids over a meal was easy.
Yes, it was great. And when Jo Ann, my late wife, and I took a dozen medical trips to Houston every year, we always ate at a Luby's cafeteria. My daughter and I still do that when we make those rare trips now.

Warner Bros. boss David Zaslav is the real ‘Man of Steel' in shifting media landscape
They hate him in Hollywood, but increasingly they're loving David Zaslav on Wall Street. OK, maybe it's not quite love but there's definitely some canoodling going down. Shares of Warner Bros. Discovery are up more than 53% over the past 12 months. Bob Iger gets endless kudos for turning around Disney following years of mismanagement and woke programming hated by much of the American public. His stock is up just 27% over the same time period. Jack Forbes / NY Post Design Zas, as he is known in the media business, is a long-time media executive who landed at the top of major media by getting the telephone nerds at AT&T to offload its Warner Media subsidiary that they didn't know how to operate to his company, Discovery, in 2022. The deal was valued at $43 billion and contained lots of debt, a drag on its share price. Shares dipped to near penny stock levels (just above $5) last year. They closed at $13.17 on Thursday. Hollywood's skepticism toward Zas began with his lack of creative chops. He was a longtime NBCUniversal executive, an acolyte of Jack Welch when he ran the media company as head of the General Electric conglomerate. He then became CEO of Discovery, a mid-sized media outfit with cable channels like the Food Network, Animal Planet and HGTV that were losing viewers in an era of cord cutting. They churned out profits based on Zas's deft balance sheet management as opposed to top-notch programming, or so his Hollywood critics said. Adding credence to the Zas' haters' world view: His reign as media mogul included a major branding misstep, renaming HBO's streaming service 'Max,' a moniker (for obvious reasons) that never stuck. He also alienated those in La La Land by canceling programs as he slashed through the balance sheet. It became nearly impossible to defend Zaslav given his stock's uneven performance and his massive $52 million pay package in 2024 – in an industry that is literally melting away because of seismic changes in the way people consume entertainment, news and sports. Pictures But there's a bullish Zas story when you sit with the business types – not crazy lefties in Hollywood who still haven't forgiven him for pulling the plug on useless movies like 'Batgirl' or refusing to overpay for NBA rights because he believed $2.6 billion a year could be put to better use. Despite the name screw-up, his streaming service makes money, a near anomaly among traditional media companies. He's breaking up WBD and will control the HBO Max streaming properties and Warner Bros. studios as CEO. His current chief financial officer, Gunnar Widenfels, will get something named Discovery Global, a holding company for the Discovery+ streaming service and all the cable networks. Those include Discovery Channel, CNN and TNT. Check out more newsletters The move lets Zas transfer some of his debt to a company that has better cash flow while he rebuilds the studio, or probably sells it. Smaller is always better in M&A, particularly if you're looking for a Big Tech player like Amazon as a buyer, which he ultimately is, I am told. Lately, Zas has even proven the creative snobs wrong. Warner Bros. Studios' 'Superman' is the smash hit of the summer. 'Sinners,' a stylistic vampire flick, has been a surprise box office success. Plus, Zas admitted defeat and went back to HBO Max for his streaming channel. Rich Greenfield, the 'ax' or eminence grise of media analysts at LightShed Partners, says Wall Street may be starting to appreciate Zas as a survivor who will keep living to fight another day, and that day may well pay off for his shareholders. 'Obviously this isn't an easy business.' Greenfield says. 'But the brilliance of David Zaslav is that he got out of Discovery which was going nowhere and convinced AT&T to engage in a merger that gave it a second life. The question now is how he builds the Warner Bros. studio and HBO given this environment.'

Trump's new tariffs slam trading partners, U.S. stock market: Live updates
The new tariff rates came before an Aug. 1 deadline Trump gave about 180 countries to either reach trade deals or face higher import duties. President Donald Trump imposed sweeping new tariffs on imports from across the world, escalating an aggressive trade policy aimed at spurring domestic manufacturing in the United States. In addition, Trump took separate action on July 31 to raise tariffs on Canadian goods from 25% to 35%. U.S. stock futures are lower on August 1, ahead of the the release of July's jobs report, due at 8:30 a.m. ET. The report is expected to show the economy added 100,000 jobs, according to a Dow Jones survey of economists. The unemployment rate is seen edging up to 4.2% from 4.1% in June. The new tariff rates, which will go into effect in seven days, come before an Aug. 1 deadline Trump gave about 180 countries to either reach trade deals or face higher import duties. Trump had twice set earlier deadlines for new tariffs before backing down. The seven-day window on the newly announced import duties could give some trading partners a window for continued talks. In April, the president and his advisors said they were confident of negotiating deals with dozens of countries. White House trade advisor Peter Navarro had predicted "90 deals in 90 days," but the haul was much lighter: United States negotiators made eight trade deals in 120 days before Trump ordered the new tariffs. More American couples are turning to Italy's ‘dolce vita' in a quest for memorable weddings
James Atkinson and Samantha Fortino toured a Tuscan vineyard and learned to make pasta and a Bolognese sauce alongside their family and friends in Florence. Atkinson discovered a penchant for chianti, while Fortino fell for Italy's hugo spritz — a cocktail that posed no risk of staining her wedding dress on July 24. Italy has hosted a number of star-studded weddings in the past decade, most recently Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez 's extravaganza in Venice. Away from the spotlight, tens of thousands of ordinary Americans have set their sights on the country for their special day in recent years. 'Weddings in America can be a little too grand and a little bit too big and it ends up not really being about the couple,' said Fortino, 28, a neonatal nurse from Skaneateles, New York. 'We both just really wanted something intimate and meaningful.' Over 15,000 foreign couples wed in Italy last year, up 64% from 2019, the year before the pandemic, according to market research from the Center of Tourist Studies of Florence. Growth was led by US couples, who account for almost one-third of that total. Italy was the top international destination for American couples after Mexico, according to Maryland-based wedding planning website The Knot. For many Americans, Italy embodies the simple, beautiful romance of a bygone era. Weather is balmy and its varied landscapes, from the sea to the mountains, stunning. The food is familiar and crowd-pleasing. But perhaps the biggest driver of the recent uptick is ample opportunity for a range of outings, which together with the wedding event are alluring for those on a quest for unique, memorable moments — part of a consumer trend termed 'the experience economy.' 'In the United States, everything is just more expensive for one night and we wanted to make an experience, so we did two nights here,' said Atkinson, 31, who owns a concrete company. 'It just seemed like way more worth it to us to do that and make a trip out of it with our family, our loved ones.' 'Nobody cancels' One guest who had never visited Italy was ecstatic about the invite, and took advantage to tack on side trips, first to Venice and then with the wedding crew to Cinque Terre. Another, Gary Prochna, nearly didn't attend because of work piling up at his paving company. He eventually came around and was floored by the venue — a 15th-century villa with a sweeping view over Florence and its famous Duomo. 'I got married in the United States and our venue was very nice. I thought — until this moment — we had the best wedding,' said Prochna, 68, adding that he now hopes his daughters will get hitched abroad. Marcy Blum, a prominent luxury event planner based in Manhattan, said almost 90% of the weddings she plans are in Italy. 'The reason Italy is so popular is because that's where your guests want to go,' she said. 'You send an invitation that you're getting married in Capri or Positano and everybody comes. Everybody. They want to come. Nobody cancels.' Jack Ezon, CEO of Embark Beyond, a luxury travel and destination event service also based in Manhattan, said 60% of his company's events were outside the US before the pandemic. Today it's almost 90%, nearly all split evenly between Italy and France. The threat of tariffs under President Donald Trump has given destination weddings a boost. Ezon has moved six events from the US to Europe this year, because people were afraid tariffs on alcohol would cause their bar bill to explode. Cost comparison The shift to destinations has benefited planners with networks across Italy and local vendors. According to Wedding Italy, the husband-and-wife team who put on the Atkinson wedding, American clients spend three times as much as Italians, due to more elaborate wedding decor and other events in their multi-day lineup. Average spend on hometown weddings in the US was $32,000 last year, according to The Knot. By comparison, foreigners' weddings in Italy cost an average $70,600 and typically have dozens fewer guests, the Center of Tourist Studies of Florence's data showed. In the garden where the Atkinsons held their service, cypress trees swayed in the wind as the bride emerged from the chapel, beaming in her lace mermaid-silhouette gown. She walked down the aisle as speakers played the theme song to Star Wars. It was her sneaky trick to make the groom cry, and it worked like a charm. Before the exchange of rings, before the lovebirds threw their arms around one another, their officiant said: 'Traditionally I would ask: Is there any reason why this couple shouldn't be married?
