WHAT HAPPENED?
That was the case during the Brazil international's latest appearance against Cruzeiro. Santos needed inspiration from somewhere in that contest having tumbled into relegation danger this season.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
They trailed at half-time in their latest Serie A fixture, but battled back to claim three priceless points in dramatic fashion - with Gustavo Caballero grabbing an 89th-minute winner.
DID YOU KNOW?
Neymar was not among the goals, but he helped to tie the Cruzeiro defence up in knots. They struggled to contain him at times, with the 33-year-old showing how destructive he can be when playing with confidence and free of any physical ailments.
One incident saw Neymar burst into the box from the left wing, before turning quickly and leaving his marker on the turf. As his rival got back up, the ex-Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain playmaker spun again and left Fabricio Bruno chasing shadows.
WHAT NEXT FOR NEYMAR?
Neymar has extended his contract back at Santos through to the end of the calendar year. Another big decision on his future will be made at that point, with Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer intending to grace the World Cup finals next summer.

Chiefs Should Benefit From Timing Of Rashee Rice's Suspension

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is slated to have his disciplinary hearing with the NFL on Tuesday, Sept. 30 in New York, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. That would represent the best-case scenario regarding a Rice suspension. That's because the Chiefs' schedule is front-loaded, and Rice should be available for that difficult stretch of September games. The Chiefs go across the world — to Brazil — to face the Los Angeles Chargers — perhaps their toughest challenger in the division — in Week One on Sept. 5. Then they face the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, who pummeled them 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX, in Week Two. After a road game on Sunday Night Football against the New York Giants, which should be very winnable, they play the team perhaps best suited to overtake them in the AFC — the Baltimore Ravens. Lamar Jackson's talented squad addressed their glaring weakness on pass defense by adding cornerback Jaire Alexander as a free agent and drafting safety Malaki Starks and edge rusher Mike Green in the first two rounds, respectively. To put it another way, the Chiefs play three playoff teams from 2024 in the first four weeks of the 2025 season but just seven playoff teams from 2024 in the final 13 games of the 2025 season. And Rice should be available for that entire opening gauntlet. Why Rice Likely Will Be Suspended Rice, who is on a four-year, $6.5 million rookie contract, likely will be disciplined for his multi-car crash in Dallas during May in 2024 when he was traveling at 119 mph in his Lamborghini. He had been facing one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury. A Dallas County judge sentenced him to five years probation and 30 days of jail, which can be served during those five years. 'My legal team is handling that,' Rice said. 'All I can do is focus on what I can control right now, and that's me doing what I do best right here on the field.' Rice's On-The-Field Focus Though a groin injury kept him out of the opening game of the preseason, Rice was back practicing the past week and has impressed throughout training camp, saying he feels '100 %,' following last year's season-ending knee injury suffered in Week Four. Rice said he's learned from his accident, which could've had a tragic outcome because of his irresponsible actions and that he now appreciates how valuable the opportunity is to get to play on the defending AFC champion Chiefs. He's preached hard work as he waits to learn his fate from the NFL. 'I'm locked in. This is what I do. This is my job. This is what I love to do. So I mean even when I'm not able to be out there with my team, I'm going to be working as hard as I can so I can be back out there with them as soon as possible,' he said. 'Being able to be on the field and coached by Coach Reid and … such a great quarterback, it's honestly a gift and a blessing.' That star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, has focused on the here and now at training camp and the preseason. He continues to hone his connection with Rice, who excels at gaining yards after the catch, while the team waits to learn the details of a potential Rice suspension. 'You can't worry about stuff that's going to happen down the line,' Mahomes said. 'All that stuff will handle itself.' And it appears as if Rice's suspension will handle itself in the best way possible for the Chiefs, allowing them to have one of their best receivers for the opening four games.

Karol G to headline halftime show during YouTube's first exclusive NFL broadcast, live from Brazil

NEW YORK (AP) — Bringing football fans, Brazil and Karol G together for a one-night experience? That's a winning formula. The Grammy award-winning musician will headline a halftime show during YouTube's first exclusive NFL broadcast next month, which will stream live from Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil on Sept. 5. That's the NFL week 1 matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and the reigning AFC-winning Kansas City Chiefs. 'This year has been truly rewarding, and the timing of this opportunity — to be part of such an important moment like YouTube's first-ever NFL live broadcast — is perfect,' the singer shared in an exclusive written statement. 'With my latest album 'Tropicoqueta,' I set out to represent the many facets of my Latin culture, something I'm incredibly passionate about in everything I do. I'm excited to bring that same energy and pride to this global stage and honored to continue elevating Latin culture on such a monumental platform.' It's a natural pairing. Karol G is a global superstar, American football is growing in popularity worldwide, and many of the world's most ardent music fans call Brazil home — it's one of the many reasons 'Come to Brazil' has become a stalwart meme, a three-word stand-in for the ultimate expression of fandom. 'Our goal is to highlight the excitement and Americana of the NFL, but do this thoughtfully in a way that plays to local cultures, practices and traditions,' said Tim Tubito, senior director of global game presentation and entertainment at the NFL. Booking Karol G 'not only excites our fans and pays homage to their culture in South America, but has an impact on a global scale,' he added. 'We hope all of our fans are ready for a historic celebration.' The game is free to stream for fans across the globe, exclusively through YouTube and YouTube TV. It begins at 5 p.m. Pacific / 8 p.m. Eastern / 9 p.m. BRT (local time). A pre-show kicks off an hour earlier. 'To celebrate this moment, we are thrilled that global superstar Karol G will perform during our halftime show,' said Angela Courtin, VP of sports and entertainment marketing at YouTube in a statement. 'The game and performance will be broadcast worldwide for free on YouTube, blending the fandom of sports and music together for one epic cultural moment.'

The Little Maestro sets sights on biggest challenge yet

Twelve months ago the well-travelled South American was just weeks into his short-lived stint with non-leaguers Blyth Spartans and earlier this year he returned home to manage Peruvian second division side Santos FC Nazca. But Solano will be watching his former clubs do battle in this weekend's Premier League opener from his hotel room in Lahore after taking on what many believe will prove to be his toughest test yet. "I like to start from scratch in a job, whatever it is," said the 50-year-old. "There's something exciting about being there at the beginning and helping to shape the future. "The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has big plans for football in the country and with a population of more than 250 million - plus all of the Pakistani communities across the world - the potential is there for all to see. "If, in the short term, I can find even 50 committed players who are passionate about playing for Pakistan and determined to improve as footballers then that's a great starting point. "I've been very impressed with what PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani has to say about professionalising football in Pakistan, developing youth football and reaching out to players around the world. "In the short term I have Olympic qualifiers to prepare for but beyond that it's a very exciting project." Solano enjoyed two hugely successful spells on Tyneside between 1998 and 2007, scoring 37 goals in 230 top flight games. In between times a player dubbed the Little Maestro by the late Diego Maradona played 49 Premier League matches for Villa. "I can't wait to see how both clubs get on this season," he added. "There's not always been the expectation to compete for the title at Newcastle and Villa like there is at Liverpool or Arsenal but that's changing. "And with that greater expectation comes increased pressure. Both teams have got a taste for Champions League football and now that level has become the norm. "The two clubs have something else in common: managers who are clever coaches capable of raising the levels of the players around them. "Both Eddie Howe and Unai Emery know they need deeper squads and more experience to compete year in, year out at the highest level but both have a fantastic track record for identifying the right players to fit their systems. "You never learn too much from pre-season - players are trying to avoid injury and stay fresh - but on Saturday lunchtime we'll start to find out what both teams can bring to the table this season." Solano knows fans raised eyebrows when news of his latest move leaked out last month. But Peru's former assistant coach is determined to broaden his footballing horizons and amass the experience he requires to take the next steps in a colourful career. "Any time you get the chance to manage a national team it's a great honour," he added. "It's a privilege to lead a great sporting nation like Pakistan. "I'm always up for a challenge and I'll do whatever it takes to become a better coach. "Of course I'd love to manage great clubs like Newcastle or Villa one day but I know an opportunity like that doesn't come along very often. "In the meantime I'm not afraid to work anywhere in the world and when I took the call from Mr Gilani I knew this was a chance too good to miss." Solano learnt of the opportunity to manage in Pakistan via a friend who used to drive the former Boca Juniors favourite home from St. James' Park. "We've always stayed in touch and he has family from Pakistan," he explained. "Word reached him that Pakistan's new president was keen to forge closer links with FIFA and grow the game over there. "That's how it all happened. The national team won its first ever World Cup qualifier against Cambodia two years ago and reaching the Asian Cup is a target. "I love foreign cultures and history and moving to a new continent to help an emerging football nation achieve something special is exciting. "When I'm back in the UK - in between international windows - I'll be strengthening relationships with players of Pakistani origin based in Britain and trying to persuade them that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. "I've already had expressions of interest from players in the Championship, League One and League Two and for this to work I'll need their support. "But I have a lot of experience of the challenges of international management from my time with Peru - both as a player and a coach - and that's not a problem. "I've never set foot in Pakistan before but it feels good to be part of this project. Let's see how far we can go."
