4 held with heroin, cash & weapons in Mohali
Mohali: Four peddlers were arrested with 211gm of heroin, Rs 8.10 lakh in drug money, two pistols and 16 live cartridges and two cars Monday. Police produced them before the local court and obtained a four-day remand for further interrogation.
The accused were identified as Satnam Singh alias Nikku, 24, from Phase 1, Suraj, 22, from Sohana, Sukhwinder Singh, 35, from Nakodar, and Suhail, 33, from Balongi. Charges under the Arms Act, NDPS Act, and relevant BNS sections have been pressed against them.
SSP (Mohali) Deepak Pareek SSP said, "During preliminary investigation, it was found that two suspects, Satnam Singh and Suhail, have a past record of criminal cases. Satnam was booked under the Arms Act at City Kharar police station, while Suhail has multiple cases, including attempt to murder, at Sohana PS in Mohali."
The SSP said the crime branch was tipped off about Satnam, Suraj and Sukhwinder carrying illegal weapons in a car and planning a major crime. Acting on this information, police set up a checkpoint near the Mauli Baidwan village and apprehended the suspects. A .32 bore pistol, a magazine, five live cartridges and 211gm of heroin were seized from them.

Further investigation revealed that Satnam obtained the heroin from Suhail. Based on this information, the police named Suhail in the case, raided his location, and arrested him too. One more .32 bore pistol with six cartridges, five cartridges of a .30 bore pistol, and Rs 8.10 lakh in drug money were seized from him. Ten more grams of heroin was found in his car.
The police are investigating the source of the heroin and to whom it was to be delivered. They are also questioning the suspects about the illegal weapons and their associates.

He informed that the PC Ghosh Commission was expected to submit the report on the Kaleshwaram project within 100 days, but it has been extending the deadline. 'Today, in connection with the PC Ghosh Commission inquiry, our leader, KCR, was called. The PC Ghosh Commission was supposed to submit the report on the Kaleshwaram project within 100 days. The Commission, which has been probing financial and procedural lapses in the multi-crore irrigation project, directed the three political leaders to appear for questioning in the first week of June. On June 8, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Konda Vishweshwar Reddy described the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project in Telangana as the 'world's biggest engineering blunder' and termed it a 'huge scam' that has severely impacted the state's economy. Speaking to ANI, Reddy said, 'Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project in Telangana is the world's biggest engineering blunder and it's a huge scam which ruined Telangana economically. It is one of the prime reasons that the richest state of Telangana is in such a horrible economic condition. We have a loan of Rs 8 lakh crore.' 'The present Congress government does not have money to pay salaries and run the government,' he added, blaming the ruling party for the deepening financial crisis. Telangana Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy also held that the previous BRS government was responsible for the project's failure, labelling it the 'biggest man-made disaster' since Independence and the 'most expensive engineering failure' caused by any state government in India. He said that Telangana is currently paying Rs 16,000 crore annually in interest and instalments on high-cost loans borrowed during the BRS regime for this 'faulty' project, thereby placing an enormous burden on the state's finances and its farmers. Police attach property of notorious drug peddler in Handwara
Handwara police attached property worth lakh belonging to a notorious drug peddler under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police said that acting under Section 68-F of the NDPS Act, Handwara police station attached two commercial shops along with the land situated at Handwara main market, belonging to Javaid Ahmad Sofi of Khunbal Handwara. 'The attachment was executed in the presence of first class executive magistrate, Handwara, in connection with case FIR No. 193/2024 U/S 8/21 NDPS Act of Handwara police station,' the spokesman said, adding that preliminary investigation has revealed that the said property was acquired through proceeds generated from illegal narcotics trade. The accused is also involved in case FIR No. 266/2022 U/S 8/21 NDPS Act registered at Handwara police action is part of police's ongoing efforts to dismantle the financial infrastructure of drug traffickers by targeting and confiscating illegally acquired assets,' the officer added.

Federal judge blocks Trump administration from continuing to detain Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil A federal judge on Wednesday ruled that Mahmoud Khalil, a legal US resident and former graduate student at Columbia University, must be released from immigration detention. Khalil was detained in March following his participation in campus pro-Palestinian demonstrations against Israel's military action in Gaza. Judge Michael Farbiarz said that Khalil's continued detention is causing him 'irreparable harm,' citing damage to his career, personal life and free speech rights. He was the first person to be detained under a Trump administration crackdown targeting international students involved in Gaza protests.
