Drug-driver hit truck carrying gas canisters and bus with passengers

A driver under the influence of cocaine collided into a bus and a truck containing gas canisters while being chased by police. When officers searched the car they discovered it was stolen and had false plates and there was a zombie-style machete knife with a 50cm-long blade.
McKenzie Newberry, 20, was seen driving a stolen white Volkswagen Golf in the Llantarnam area of Cwmbran on April 17 at excessive speed. He was pursued by a police officer who attempted to stop the defendant but Newberry made no attempt to slow down.
A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court heard he overtook other road users and forced them to take evasive action. For the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter.
He reached speeds of 80mph in a 30mph zone and increased his speed to the point the pursuing officer reached speeds of 88mph in order to keep him in sight.
The officer turned the corner and saw the Golf had hit a truck carrying gas canisters and a bus that was carrying passengers.
A man alighted from the truck and chased after Newberry who had ditched the Golf and was running off.
A police dog was deployed and the defendant was found hiding in a pipe in a wooded area.
The Golf was searched and was found to be using false number plates. It was also found to be a stolen vehicle having been taken from an address in Neath.
Inside the Golf was a zombie-style machete with a 50cm blade.
He was also tested for drugs and was found to be under the influence of cocaine.
Newberry, of Maesglas Crescent, Newport, later pleaded guilty to drug driving, aggravated vehicle-taking, driving while disqualified, possession of an offensive weapon, possession of cloned number plates, and driving without a licence and insurance.
The court heard he has one previous conviction for similar matters.
In mitigation Julia Cox said her client had been remanded in custody since April and wrote a letter to the court apologising for his behaviour and said he "realised his actions had affected other people".
Judge Daniel Williams sentenced Newberry to 14 months imprisonment.
The defendant was also disqualified from driving for 12 months following his release from prison.

A 71-year-old man who has pleaded guilty to a stalking offence involving actress Anna Friel has been bailed and is due to be sentenced next month A man who stalked Anna Friel is due to be sentenced next month. Phil Appleton, 71, will attend court after he sent several messages to the star and visited her home address, leaving "unwanted" gifts. The incidents took place between January 1 2022 and December 11 2024, Reading Crown Court had previously heard. Appleton has been bailed ahead of next month's sentencing. Earlier this week the pensioner pleaded guilty to a stalking offence under Section 2A of the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. His initial sentencing was due to take place on Thursday. However, Judge Alan Blake adjourned the hearing until September 18 for a pre-sentence report to be carried out. Appleton has been told he must not contact the former Brookside actress, 49. He is also not allowed to enter the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, while he must co-operate with those tasked with conducting the pre-sentence report. He had been in custody for six months, the court heard. He is also said to have spent time in a mental health facility but has now been granted conditional bail. The stalking is said to have caused Ms Friel 'serious alarm or distress' and had 'an adverse effect on her day-to-day activities', the court heard in March. At the time, Appleton had pleaded not guilty. He previously pleaded not guilty to one count of stalking causing serious alarm or distress. The defendant, who appeared by videolink from HMP Bullingdon and did not have a solicitor present in court, told judge Neil Millard he accepted sending messages to Ms Friel and visiting her home address on several occasions, but denied his behaviour amounted to stalking. Friel is best known for her role as Detective Sergeant Marcella Backland in the hit ITV drama Marcella, which aired from 2016 until 2019. She also played the part of Beth Jordache in the iconic Channel 4 soap Brookside between 1993 and 1995. It was this role that landed her a National Television Awards in 1995. As well as he UK success, Friel forged an impressive CV stateside. She starred as Charlotte 'Chuck' Charles in the ABC comedy series Pushing Daisies from 2007 until 2009. She then had a lead role in the second season of the anthology series The Girlfriend Experience - which was created by Oscar winning Hollywood director Steven Soderbergh. In Marcella, the popular Netflix series, Friel landed an Emmy Award. She was named the winner of the Best Performance by an Actress category in 2017. Elsewhere in her impressive portfolio, she has appeared in films such as Limitless, alongside Bradley Cooper, and London Boulevard alongside Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley.

Pembrokeshire drug dealers sold cocaine and tried to get gun
Harrison Billing, Danhiellen Raji, and John Phillips appeared at Swansea Crown Court charged with a series of drug and weapon offences. Prosecutor Ashanti-Jade Walton said police stopped a Nissan Juke heading into Pembrokeshire on February 12 after receiving intelligence it was carrying drugs. Officers found 253 grams of cocaine in a container in the footwell by Billing – valued at £20,540, and a 'large knife' was on the Raji's seat. Ms Walton said Billing also had business cards on him which listed a phone number, drug weights and prices, and read: 'Thank you for supporting our small business. We do appreciate it'. Drug-related messages were found on Billing's phone – including directing drug runners and bidding '£40,000 up front' for cocaine from a contact named 'A'. Raji's phone also had drug-related messages and a picture of himself holding a large amount of money. Both Billing and Raji also exchanged messages about acquiring a firearm. Billing messaged a contact saying he 'was trying to get a toy' – meaning a gun – and offering £1,000 extra if he could supply the 'toy' quickly. When Phillips' address was searched, officers found a quantity of cannabis. Harrison Billing was caught with large amounts of cocaine twice within a few months. Police pursued Billing's Mercedes at around 10.50pm in Milford Haven after he flew over a junction at high speed. He was doing 70mph in a 30mph limit, but was arrested after he crashed into a wall and railings on the corner of Hamilton Terrace and Francis Street. Upon searching the car, officers found around 70 grams of high purity cocaine – worth around £4,250 – and £925.31 in cash, along with four mobile phones. His co-defendant Dylan Brown, 20, of Chestnut Way in Milford Haven, was sentenced to 18 months detention in April after he admitted possession with intent to supply cocaine, possession of criminal property, and being involved in the supply of cocaine and cannabis on the basis that he was acting under the direction of Billing. Both Billing and Raji pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cocaine, possession with intent to supply cocaine, and conspiring to possess a firearm. Billing, now 19, of Jury Lane in Haverfordwest, also admitted being concerned in the supply of cocaine, possession with intent to supply cocaine, dangerous driving, possession of criminal property and driving with no insurance. Dyfed Thomas, for Billing, said: 'He wishes the court to know there is a genuine remorse for the position he's put himself in. 'He wants an opportunity to show he's not this person.' He said Billing had 'witnessed things that no child should witness' growing up, and had spend his early teenage years in the care system. 19-year-old Raji, of no fixed abode, further admitted possession of a knife. He had nine previous convictions for 18 offences – including for purchasing a prohibited weapon and possession of an offensive weapon. (Image: Dyfed-Powys Police) Ian Ibrahim, in mitigation, said Raji had 'a very very difficult start in life' as he had been in care since he was kicked out of his home at 13 and had since been through 'over 20 care homes'. Mr Ibrahim said Raji had experienced friends being stabbed which 'goes some way to explain' his weapons charges, although he acknowledged 'it's no excuse'. Phillips, 37, of Pen Puffin in Steynton, admitted possession with intent to supply cocaine and cannabis possession. Ryan Bowen, appearing for Phillips, said the defendant admitted the cocaine charge on the basis he was being used by his co-defendants. He said Phillips didn't expect to make a financial gain, and his co-defendants took advantage of him due to his neurodiversity and 'deficits in consequential thinking'. Addressing Billing and Raji, Judge Huw Rees said: 'If you think that playing the big man in supplying Class A drugs is the answer then you are very much mistaken.' He sentenced Billing to four years and two months detention, whilst Raji was sentenced to three years and nine months detention. Phillips was sentenced to 18 months, suspended for 18 months. He must complete 180 hours of unpaid work and 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Pembrokeshire man accused of assaulting and strangling woman
Kevin Walters, 35, of Maesgrug in Stop And Call, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates' Court charged with nine offences. Walters was accused of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour between June 2022 and July this year. It was alleged that he used his partner's bank card and money to shop for himself, threw away her bank card and Healthy Start card so she could not buy things for herself, and loosened the wheel nuts on her car and deflated her tyres. He was also accused of three offences of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, after he was alleged to have assaulted his partner on September 3 last year, May 10, and June 14. Walters was further accused of five offences of intentional strangulation on July 21, August 10, September 3, and November 13 last year, as well as on February 9 this year. The case came before Haverfordwest Magistrates' Court on July 21, and was sent on to Swansea Crown Court. Walters was remanded into custody and will appear to enter his pleas on August 22.
