‘This is not who we are:' State College church reacts after Pride flag burned
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WTAJ) — A State College man was arrested after police said he lit a Pride flag on fire at a church, shouted homophobic slurs, and damaged other decorations. The church reacted to the incident and shared a message to the community.
The incident occurred outside the Faith United Church of Christ in Downtown State College. Reverend & church Pastor Jes Kast got the text the day the incident occurred and said she was worried.
'My initial reaction was, this is something that is that we will not stand for in our community. That's not who State College is, and that we need to take action immediately, calm, peaceful action, and this needs to be reported,' Kast said.
Police: State College man arrested for setting PRIDE flag on fire at local church
The church has a camera outside of the main door, and they were able to send video evidence to the State College police. Officers were then able to arrest 27-year-old Markos Bejiga, a resident of State College. He was charged with one felony count of causing or risking a catastrophe, a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct, and three summary counts of criminal mischief.
Investigators say Bejiga lit a Pride flag on fire outside the Faith United Church of Christ, attempted to set another flag ablaze while climbing a streetlight pole, and damaged decorations at Chumley's and Café 210 West. He is also accused of shouting slurs at bystanders during the acts.
'He had some sort of, I think, an aerosol and a lighter to try and light that up there. It's hard to reach the Pride banner from below, so you have to stand up. So we think that's what happened, but I'm letting the police look into that,' Kast said.
Kast said she has a two-fold message for everyone in the State College community after this incident.
'This is not who we are, we won't stand for any form of hatred, we won't stand for any form of vandalism or arson. Our community is one of respect, respect of all sorts of people. And so we as a community will stand up to any form of hatred that there may be,' Kast said. 'Like, in the words of Jesus, love one another, it's the very words that are written in our stained glass windows here that blessed are the peacemakers, that's who we will be in this community, that's who we've been since the 1930s, and that's who we will continue to be.'
Bejiga will be formally arraigned in July.

Pennsylvania man sentenced to 23 years in prison for drugs, money laundering
PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WTAJ) — A Pennsylvania man was sentenced to more than two decades in federal court after a drug trafficking and money laundering operation spanning from the Pittsburgh area to California. Andrew Beatty, 41, of Crafton was sentenced to 23 years, followed by 5 years of supervised release by US District Judge Cathy Bissoon after an extensive investigation found Beatty was the leader of a large-scale Pittsburgh-area drug trafficking organization with associates in California assisting the operation. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), along with multiple federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, uncovered that Beatty and associates would coordinate shipments of heroin and cocaine hidden within vehicles that were then transported via commercial car carriers from California to Pennsylvania. In December of 2013 by DEA agents and the Ohio Highway Patrol conducted a traffic stop of a car-carrier truck that housed a car that Beatty had shipped to the Mexican organization in California. After a search of that car, $130,000 was seized. According to the authorities, after that incident, Beatty would go on to use a Colombian broker to arrange the transport of money to the Mexican organization. What the associates were not aware of was that the broker was an undercover DEA agent. That agent would go on to receive almost $225,000 each time from Beatty or his associates. Throughout early 2014, multiple searches occurred of cars as well as storage lockers of Beatty's that found heroin, cocaine, money, and guns. Beatty was convicted on multiple counts of conspiracy to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine and a kilogram or more of heroin and conspiracy to launder drug trafficking proceeds. Pride crosswalk vandalized; Tisdale condemns hate act
TISDALE — The Town of Tisdale issued an official statement condemning the acts of vandalism at Tisdale Middle and Secondary School's (TMSS) Pride crosswalk. On June 12, it was reported to the RCMP that someone had painted a swastika over the Pride crosswalk. It was also driven over, and skid marks were noticeable. 'The Town of Tisdale is disheartened and disappointed by the recent act of vandalism that occurred within the community. Such senseless damage not only affects public property but also undermines the safety, pride and spirit we work hard to uphold in our town,' the town said in a media release. The Town of Tisdale is offering a reward of up to $1,000, which may be shared among individuals who provide valuable information leading to charges. Tisdale Mayor Roy Skoglund has personally pledged a financial contribution to support the effort to investigate. 'The TMSS True Colours GSA Club was proud to join Suncrest College in painting the Recplex sidewalk in rainbow colours for Pride Month. This vibrant display is more than just art — it's a powerful reminder that LGBTQ2S+ people are seen, respected and belong,' the TMSS True Colours GSA Club said earlier in a post on social media.
