Shakira performance for World Pride opening concert abruptly canceled due to technical issues
One day before the kickoff concert for World Pride 2025 in the nation's capital, headlining performer Shakira has abruptly canceled due to equipment difficulties.
'We are deeply disappointed that unforeseen circumstances have forced the cancellation' of the concert, the Capital Pride Alliance, the main World Pride organizer, said in a Friday statement. 'Updates about the relocated Opening Ceremony program will be released as soon as they are finalized!'
The multiplatinum singer had been scheduled to headline the opening celebrations Saturday night at Nationals Park.

The reasons are apparently an extension of equipment issues related to her Thursday night concert in Boston's Fenway Park, which was also canceled hours before it was set to begin.
A Friday night concert at Fenway for country star Jason Aldean was also canceled.

'Due to complications with the previous show in Boston, Shakira's full tour production cannot be transported to Washington, DC in time for her scheduled performance at Nationals Park,' the Capital Pride Alliance statement said. 'Despite every effort to make it happen, it is not possible to move forward as planned.'
The Alliance noted that the full slate of citywide events was still on for opening weekend, and said the kickoff ceremony would be relocated and reorganized.
The cancellation presents a further challenge for the Alliance, but at least a nonpolitical one.

Organizers have already said they expected international attendance to measurably suffer as a result of concern and anger in the LGBTQ+ community over President Donald Trump's policies.
Trump's public antipathy for trans protections and drag shows has already prompted two international LGBTQ+ organizations, Eagle Canada and the African Human Rights Coalition, to issue warnings against traveling to the US at all.
The primary concern is that trans or nonbinary individuals would face trouble entering the country if passport control officers enforce the administration's strict binary view of gender status.

Some potential international participants have already announced plans to skip this year's events, either out of fear of harassment or as a boycott against Trump's policies.

But others have called for a domestic mobilization to flood the capital.
Capital Pride Alliance Executive Director Ryan Bos said that security fencing would be installed surrounding the final two-day concert and rally on a multi-block stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue.
Early hotel reservation numbers for the final World Pride weekend, June 6-8, were originally down from the previous year, according to Destination DC, which tracks reservations.
But Destination DC President Elliott Ferguson told reporters on Thursday that, 'what we're seeing now is a surge at the last minute, especially with the national community.'
Ferguson speculated that concerns about international attendance had 'galvanized the local community, the national community to want to come to the city.'

Stephen Miller describes Trump-heavy family life days after wife leaves administration to work with Musk
Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff for policy, has described his Trump-centric family life days after his wife left her administration post to work for Elon Musk. After discussing Trump's construction of the MAGA movement, his immigration stance, and Democrats' 'unsellable ideology,' Miller explained his personal ties to President Donald Trump in a softball Fox News interview with Lara Trump, the president's daughter-in-law. The Saturday evening interview comes days after his wife Katie Miller reportedly left her role as an adviser at the Department of Government Efficiency to work full-time for Musk, who once led the cost-cutting arm. It's unclear when the interview was recorded, and his wife's departure from the administration wasn't discussed. But Miller's appearance seemed to serve as a counter to any rumors that there's a rift between Musk and Trump. The world's richest person left DOGE after a turbulent few months taking a chainsaw to federal agencies; his 130-day special government employee status came to an end last week. The deputy chief of staff emphasized how large a role the president and his White House have played in his family life. Miller described meeting his wife during the first Trump administration. 'When I first met her, she was the communications director at the Department of Homeland Security, so it's very on-brand, the relationship, because we were on conference calls every day on border security.' The pair even got married at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, according to the New York Times. Miller is considered the architect of the controversial family separation policy in Trump's first term. His wife, then a spokesperson to Vice President Mike Pence, was sent to a child detention center at the southern border to make her more compassionate, but 'it didn't work," she told reporter Jacob Soboroff. Miller then told Lara Trump about his own children. Asked about whether his children have met Trump, Miller said he has a photo of his daughter with the president when she was just a newborn. He claimed: "My daughter is always asking to see the president again…She's always desperate for any chance to get face time with the president.' He added that the president is 'great with kids,' describing him as a 'kid magnet' and a 'child whisperer.' Under Trump, apparently, children are always welcome at the White House. 'This is the most family-friendly work environment. You can bring your kid to work any time you want,' he added. He's been in Trump's orbit for a decade, but to him, 'sometimes it only feels like it's been a year.'

Grupo Firme Cancel US Show After Visa Suspended by Trump Administration
The post Grupo Firme Cancel US Show After Visa Suspended by Trump Administration appeared first on Consequence. Mexican regional act Grupo Firme have pulled out of their scheduled appearance at the La Onda Festival this weekend after their visas were unexpectedly suspended. The performance was set to take place on Sunday (June 1st) in Napa Valley, CA. The band said their visas are 'under administrative review by the U.S. Embassy,' per an Instagram statement obtained by the Associated Press, and stated it would be 'impossible' to stage their show. Due to the confidential nature of visa proceedings, the AP also corroborated the U.S. Embassy in Mexico could not provide any additional information at this time. Grupo Firme isn't the only Mexican act facing visa issues as of late; last month, Julión Álvarez abruptly postponed a sold-out show in Arlington, TX, after his work visa was revoked, barring his entry into the States. Both acts are known for performing narco-corridos, a genre that has long stirred debate. While critics argue these songs glorify cartel leaders, supporters contend they offer a raw reflection of the difficult realities faced by youth entangled in the drug trade. Amid the growing controversy, Grupo Firme has taken steps in recent months to stop performing narco-corridos live. Beyond the targeting of Latino musicians, Canadian trans musician Bells Larsen had to cancel his US tour because 'US Immigration now only recognizes identification that corresponds with one's assigned sex at birth.' Meanwhile, FKA twigs faced setbacks for her 'Eusexua Tour' after not completing visa paperwork on time, rescheduling several US tour dates multiple times. UK Subs revealed they were denied entry to the United States, with bassist Alvin Gibbs hypothesizing it may have been due to his lambasting of Donald Trump.
