The 34 best Met Gala beauty looks of all time

Vogue Singapore02-05-2025

Ever since its first 'Fashion Plate'-themed event in 1971, the Met Gala has remained an annual playground for the kind of visionary, no-holds-barred glamour that's otherwise reserved for photo shoots. No wonder, then, that the Metropolitan Museum of Art has also been the site of iconic beauty transformations sure to spark trends—and more than a few headlines.
At 2015's 'China: Through the Looking Glass' fete, Dakota Johnson soaked up the spotlight with her long ingenue ponytail chopped to a springy chin length—and arguably set off the wave of bobs that's still sweeping the Instagram set. Gisele Bündchen's steamy bronze glow in 1999 was just as prescient, elevating bombshell nudes into the gold standard of summer make-up.
And yet, for a certain kind of red carpet regular, the Met Gala is less about perfecting a signature look than an opportunity to walk the line between whimsical and dramatic. Take Cher, who paired a sparkling Bob Mackie confection with sculptural earrings and a wash of lavender eyeshadow in 1985, while Beyoncé went from Sasha Fierce to avant-garde vamp with the help of a slicked-down style and a smouldering violet lip in 2014—and Rihanna won the 2015 red carpet with the help of a gilded headdress and a transformative set of eyebrows.
Perhaps the most boundary-pushing gala yet, 2019's 'Camp: Notes on Fashion'-themed festivities inspired bright palettes, and even outfit changes, as Lady Gaga made her entrance onto the red carpet wearing a set of oversized gold lashes and a head-turning platinum bob.
In 2022, the Met Gala returned with the second installation of 'In America: An Anthology of Fashion,' and guests interpreted the 'gilded glamour' dress code through makeup, hair accessories, and glowing complexions.
The 2023 Met Gala, themed 'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,' saw guests honouring the late designer Karl Lagerfeld, through black and white palettes and pearl details as BLACKPINK's Jennie Kim paid homage to Lagerfeld's Chanel legacy with effortless grace.
Zendaya shut down the Met Gala 2024 red carpet, themed 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion' with her bold make-up choices which featured deep burgundy smokey eyeshadow paired with pencil-thin eyebrows that were all the rage in the '90s. Meanwhile Alia Bhatt channeled true Indian princess vibes, floating onto the carpet right out of a fairytale with her ethereal soft glam. Ahead of the 2025 Met Gala, we've rounded up the best beauty looks to debut at the gala over the years. From impeccably detailed updos to next-level make-up, they're still iconic even decades later.

Labubu mania goes viral worldwide: China and Asia's stars rewrite global consumer culture

ASIA: Today, a new group of Asian and Chinese personalities is altering the fashion and lifestyle scene, turning niche fixations into universal must-haves. In a recent feature published by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), current superstars aren't just instigating trends and movements; they're rewriting the ideals and consumer actions of a novel, internationally connected fan base. Lisa and the rise of Labubu When Lisa from the famous K-pop supergroup BLACKPINK shared a photograph snuggling an odd-looking but luxurious toy named Labubu, the internet 'detonated.' The Thai celebrity, boasting more than 100 million social media followers and 1.9 billion solo streams, catapulted the bunny-eared creature, initially an offbeat character from the Chinese brand Pop Mart, into international recognition. Fashioned by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, Labubu's naughty smile and furry frame became an instantaneous hit. All over the world, fans stand in line for hours, with some blind boxes (initially valued at US$27.99 [S$37.79]) reselling for 10 times their worth. Personalities including David Beckham, Rihanna, and Chinese thespian Liu Yifei followed suit, bolstering Labubu's pop culture status. See also Viral FB post urges honesty for loved ones before it's too late One fan from China allegedly spent more than US$28,000 to collect every variety of the toy. 'It's about rarity, surprise, and fun,' he said, highlighting the emotional and mental pull behind limited-edition drops. Daniel Wu makes English cool again Hong Kong artist Daniel Wu is spinning the script on language education. Branded for his award-winning roles and confident and smooth English, Wu launched a spoken English development course this year, intended to help Chinese followers learn and master everyday expressions. With 80+ instructions on everything from travel to colloquial speech, the US$60 course struck a chord. In his first livestream on May 21, Wu sold over 2,000 courses in 30 minutes, netting an amazing US$1.2 million. Enthusiasts labeled him an 'intellectual idol,' praising him for spinning self-improvement into a fashion statement. Wu's accomplishment stresses a collective craving for knowledge-driven celebrity content. Ju Jingyi's retro film revival Chinese singer-actress Ju Jingyi, frequently titled a 'once-in-4,000-years beauty,' spurred an 'old-fashioned photography rage' when she posted wistful pictures shot on obsolete Polaroid peel-apart film. See also Keeping up with Kaftans The low-fi visual struck a sentimental nerve. Notwithstanding its volatility and the film being out of production, admirers congregated in studios, spending up to US$60 for a single photo. Once sold for a meager 70 yuan (S$13.10) each packet, expired film is now priced up to US$1,000 on the resale market. Ju's post garnered over 1.1 million likes, and linked hashtags have attracted more than 650 million views, demonstrating that, occasionally, imperfection is a decisive statement. G-Dragon's 'auntie' aesthetic goes global G-Dragon, the ever-iconic frontman of Big Bang, got back to the limelight with his single Power in 2024, but it wasn't just the song that got people in a frenzy; it was his drastically gender-fluid fashion style. From flowery cravats at the airport to pink gabardine Chanel jackets on stage, G-Dragon incorporated what admirers tenderly named 'grannycore.' His audacious expressions, combining gentleness and arrogance, were rapidly accepted online by fashion buffs of all genders. See also The Phantom of Oxley Castle is not your average children's book 'He's never followed trends—he creates them,' one follower wrote. Apparently, Asian stars have proven that they can set the attitude for what's next in global culture. By merging genuineness, melancholy, and trailblazing style, these personalities are not just prompting people on what to wear or buy, but also how they view themselves.

Beijing woos US influencers with free trip to show ‘real China'

China seeks to enlist young social media influencers from the US to collaborate with its local content creators. PHOTO: AFP China is inviting American influencers to join a 10-day, all-expense paid trip through the country in July , as part of Beijing's efforts to boost people-to-people exchanges and showcase the 'real China'. The initiative, titled 'China-Global Youth Influencer Exchange Programme', seeks to enlist young social media influencers with at least 300,000 followers to collaborate with Chinese content creators, according to recruitment posts by Chinese state-affiliated media outlets, including the China Youth Daily. While relations between China and the US have deteriorated in recent months over issues including geopolitics, technology and trade, the programme marks an effort to boost cultural exchanges. In 2024 , President Xi Jinping had called for more exchanges between Chinese and American universities, after previously announcing a plan to welcome 50,000 American students to China. Another post in College Daily, a publication particularly targeting Chinese students in North America, specified that applicants for the exchange programme based in the US should be active on platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and X, and should 'love Chinese culture' and 'have no history of bad behaviours'. It called on Chinese students overseas to encourage influencers in their circle to apply, and said the successful candidates will get China's official invite as well as special assistance from the state to process their visas. The trip intends to take the participants across five Chinese cities – Suzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Handan and Beijing, and will cover China's e-commerce hubs, the headquarter of companies such as Xiaohongshu Technology Co and BYD Co. The influencers will also partake in cultural activities such as Taichi and be able to live-stream their trip to the Great Wall, according to the posts. Working with Chinese social media influencers on ideas, and getting their content promoted by China's state media will be part of the deal. Social media content from Western influencers travelling through China post-Covid-19 have won praise from the state media for their authentic portrayal of everyday life in the country. In April, American streamer IShowSpeed's visit to China sparked widespread curiosity among fans about advancements in Chinese technology. The authorities have tapped social media influencers to check negative information and promote positive contents. In 2023, think-tank Australian Strategic Policy Institute analysed over 120 foreign influencers, mostly active on Chinese social media, received the state's help to grow their influence in return for content that praises and spreads Beijing's narrative.
