Nanta hands over appointment letters to 46 community leaders in Song District

KAPIT (June 6): Minister for Works and Kapit MP Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi on Thursday afternoon presented Letters of Appointment to 46 community leaders (KMKK) in the Song District during a ceremony held at the Song District Office meeting room.
Among the recipients were 34 Tuai Rumah and Ketua Kampung, along with one Penghulu and one Pemanca, who received renewal letters for continued service.
Ten newly appointed Tuai Rumah also received their appointment letters.
In appreciation of their service, eight outgoing community leaders who had reached the mandatory retirement age of 76 were presented with certificates of appreciation.
Nanta congratulated both the reappointed and newly appointed leaders, urging them to serve with integrity and dedication.
'For the newly appointed community leaders, you were chosen by the people because they believe you are capable of leading. I urge all of you to work closely with government agencies, the District Officer, and elected representatives such as Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan and myself, to drive development in your respective villages,' he said.
During the same event, Nanta and Lidam each contributed RM30,000 to the Song District Community Leaders' Association to support its ongoing activities.
They also conducted a symbolic handover of a longboat equipped with a 30HP engine to the Song Fire and Rescue Team, enhancing its ability to respond to emergencies in the interior regions along the Rejang, Song, and Katibas Rivers.

THE Madani government is strongly urged to cease the repeated deferments of its e-invoicing exercise by openly acknowledging the current lack of readiness for implementation and to embark on a comprehensive review of the nation's long-term tax structure. This is because the series of repeated delays are unfair to businesses that have already invested significant time and resources in preparation for the exercise, according to MCA's Selangor Youth Chief Tan Jie Sen. On Thursday (June 5), the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) announced yet another delay in its implementation of the e-invoicing system which is originally scheduled to be enforced this year for companies with an annual turnover of RM1 mil. Following exemption granted to businesses earning less than RM500,000 annually, the e-invoicing implementation phase for taxpayers with annual income of RM1 mil up to RM5 mil is now postponed to Jan 1, 2026 while that of taxpayers with annual income or sales up to RM1 mil has been deferred to July 1, 2026. 'More critically, such indecisiveness undermines public and business confidence in government policy,' Tan who is also an MCA Youth central committee member pointed out in a statement. 'The postponements also reflect unresolved issues within the current e-Invoice framework and its support infrastructure. 'The Finance Ministry (MOF) and the IRB must be transparent about these shortcomings by providing a concrete and practical plan for improvement rather than resorting to indefinite delays.' In a related development, MCA also took a swipe at the recent announcement by Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying that the government will soon expand the scope of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) via a gazette next week. 'This effectively amounts to a backdoor tax increase and lays bare the fiscal pressures facing the national treasury,' asserted Tan. 'Given the current state of strained public finances and rising fiscal burdens, the government must set aside political prejudices and seriously consider the reintroduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).' He added: 'Compared to the existing SST regime, GST offers a more structured, transparent and broad-based taxation model. It is also a more sustainable mechanism that can cushion the socioeconomic impact of subsidy removals in the future.' – June 7, 2025

Kota Kinabalu: There are plans to build a replica of the Nomad aircraft involved in the 1976 Double Six tragedy at Prince Philip Park, Tanjung Aru, as part of its redevelopment, says Tanjung Aru Eco-Development (TAED) Chairman Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia. He said the intention is not to relocate the existing memorial in Sembulan but to create an additional site of remembrance within the redeveloped Prince Philip Park. Acknowledging that the idea of a replica might be painful for some victims' families, he expressed willingness to meet them personally and adjust the plans if needed. He said it is not to sensationalise the event, but to honour those who perished. Pandikar said the park's redevelopment will also include elements that highlight Sabah's historical journey, such as a museum-like archive showcasing the State's path to independence. 'People might not go out of their way to visit formal archives, but if we place educational elements in a park they already enjoy, it becomes a space for everyday learning,' he said. The Double Six memorial component is expected to cost between RM100,000 and RM200,000, forming part of the larger RM35 million park redevelopment project. Pandikar expressed concern that many Malaysians, especially those from Peninsular Malaysia, are still unaware of the tragedy. He said during a recent talk most attendees had never heard of the incident. He supports the idea of incorporating the Double Six tragedy into the national school syllabus and was encouraged by the high turnout of young people at the recent remembrance ceremony. 'While the Sembulan site remains the official memorial, we support establishing more access points nearby to help more people, including foreigners, understand this important part of our history,' he said. RM250,000 concrete drain completed at Lrg Semaba 7 to tackle flooding issues

KUCHING (June 7): The construction of a concrete drain at the T-junction of Lorong Semaba 7 has been completed at the cost of RM250,000, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap. He said the rural transformation programme (RTP) project had resolved long-standing drainage and flooding issues in the area. 'With the completion of this phase, residents in the neighbourhood can now look forward to improved water flow, reduced flood risk and better overall living conditions,' he said in a statement. He emphasised that the initiative is more than just a basic infrastructure upgrade. 'It is a commitment to ensure that every part of Kota Sentosa is not left behind in terms of infrastructure. Too many of our older residential areas still suffer from outdated or insufficient basic amenities. 'I am working tirelessly to correct that,' he added. Yap also revealed that the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has conducted survey and assessment works on the opposite side of the same T-junction, as well as another stretch of earth drains along Lorong Semaba 11. The proposed next phase will involve the construction of additional concrete drains, with a combined estimated cost of RM400,000, and MPP engineers are currently preparing the Bill of Quantities to move the project forward. Reaffirming his commitment to infrastructure development, Yap said he will continue to advocate for improvements under the RTP and other government allocations. 'Development cannot be concentrated in one area. As your elected representative, I will continue to press for improvements – street by street, lorong (lane) by lorong – so that all residents of Kota Sentosa enjoy the benefits of proper, modern infrastructure.' Yap also highlighted that his efforts are aligned with the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government's focus on inclusive development and narrowing the infrastructure gap, particularly in semi-urban and suburban communities. He emphasised that infrastructure is not just about roads and drains. 'It's about dignity, safety and improving the quality of life for the people I serve.
